The whole Beetlejuice marrying Lydia thing is creepy, but I think the idea in the story is less that he's creeping on her (in this particular scene, anyway) and more that he's trying to cement "citizenship" in the world of the living by marrying someone who's still alive. He describes himself as an "illegal alien" right beforehand.

P.S. Michael Keaton in The Other Guys is quietly one of the funniest parts of that movie. And 13:14 - Jay mentioned Surge, which I will forevor stand behind. When I was little, I got a bottle from the vending machine that was outside the supermarket downstairs, and I got a winning bottle cap that granted me WCW Nitro for N64. With a short mail-in of the bottle cap courtesy of my parents' help, the game arrived brand new and free in the mail, and it sure got tons of play!

This movie was shot in Vermont, I believe. My mom and her boyfriend went and visited the town some time ago when heading up there for a family emergency. The house doesn't exist anymore as it was only built for the film, and the bridge no longer has a top to it, but it was shot in Vermont. Specifically Corinth, Vermont. Partially, anyway. Google says they also shot in Leavesden, which I assume is somewhere in England.

This movie has a very unique place in my heart. I saw it waaaay too young, and the scene where Alec & Geena change their faces is 100% in the top 3 things that gave me nightmares when I was little. Probably because it was most likely the first time I was introduced to body horror. But as I grew older, it went from being scary as hell to absolutely hilarious. I can say that about no other movie in the history of Hollywood for me. A truly unique and weird movie.

Originally the tree that Beetlejuice kicks was supposed to stay up, but it wasn't attached (properly?) so the "NIce Fucking Model" was a direct jab at the set designer/ art department. It's such a fantastic movie, and I haven't even touched on the fiery pair in the movie of Emma Thompson and Kenneth Braunagh! If you guys haven't seen it, that's an excellent thing to add as an option to some of your polls, because I think you would get a complete kick out of it. I don't know if someone else answered this already, but while this is supposedly Connecticut, exterior shots were filmed in East Corinth, VT. Which they went back to for the sequel. When filming was nearly finished for the sequel, a bunch of local boys stole one of the statues (the centipede looking one IIRC). Like backed the truck up to the set, threw it in the back (not that heavy apparently) and sped off into the night. Sherrifs couldn't find it or them for several days before it was returned.

The house itself is not real. It was just a facade and it was torn down after filming then rebuilt in the exact same place for the sequel. The exteriors were filmed in East Corinth, Vermont where most of the town in the movie still exists. You just can't visit the house. You'd have to make do with looking at an empty hill. I read that the roof was just canvas, painted to look like the roof and when they filmed on location they used giant fans to pressurise the house so the canvas expanded and looked like it was real.

I recently rewatched the movie for the first time in years, after seeing and falling in love with the musical. It's definitely fun, but really made me appreciate the musical as an adaptation even more! I don't think the movie would make a good direct translation to stage, they were smart to do their own thing.

Hot Take: Winona Ryder’ portrayal of Lydia Deetz was Michael Keaton’s main inspiration for Batman. 😉

just from the way Adam whinced so hard at the sculptures moving around, I KNOW that Phil Tippet's Mad God would be a crazy fun reaction (for me to watch)

So glad it's not just me who thinks of Will Ferrell when they hear Robert Goulet. I couldn't even tell you anything they guy himself actually does. The only thing I know him from is SNL and that impression.

This is the movie that taught me PG-13 movies are allowed to say Fuck once. Not a fact I wanted to learn in Highschool when I recommended it to my teacher as a Halloween movie we should watch and Beetlejuice said "fuck" in front of my entire class. Whoops.

The musical makes the cartoon far more plausible as having a friendship between Lydia and Beetlejuice.

I saw Beetlejuice twice on broadway and sorry if this is blasphemous but I like it way better than the movie. Alex Brightman is a legend and the musical gives everyone (including Beetlejuice and the dad) a good character arc. The story is easier to follow and Beetlejuice is in it the whole time (because its called... yunno... Beetlejuice). Plus the wedding being like "a green card thing" and the fact that they make fun of it in the song Creepy Old Guy is just gold.

While this is an iconic role for Keaton, I'm partial to his leading titular character in the movie which ran constantly on mid-day Comedy Central in the late 90s/early 2000s; Johnny Dangerously

A classic. Even Joe Piscopo is great in that! "My mother hung me on a hook once... ONCE."

I love that this is what got Keaton the role with Batman, his dedication, the Jokerish aspects. I'm excited for the sequel.
