The Academy is not in the habit of honoring people in a horror movie. She probably will be ignored, just like the movie says. Or, maybe we'll be delightfully surprised, who knows.

everybody's talking about Moore's performance, and it is great indeed, but Margaret Qualley's & Dennis Quaid's are as good. (they just have less screen time.)

This is actually a French film made with American lead actors, so that's why they didn't think it odd to have "tits out" on the New Years show with kids in the audience.

There are nods to a number of other films, in this film:, "The Substance" ... - The theme from 2001, when the monster appears on-stage; - In the elevator, Sue pulls off a fingernail, then loses an ear. In addition to a plot point, those same two body parts are lost in two very key moments in the David Cronenberg classic, "The Fly" (1986). (There is also a scene in "The Fly" when he unexpectedly loses a tooth, just as Sue does.) - "The Fly" has dialogue, in which 'Brundlefly' seeks to make himself more human, by having himself, Veronica and her baby 'joined together in one body.' That film never delivers that outcome. But, a Special Features segment on the DVD shows a scene that was filmed but cut: Brundlefly experiments with a Baboon and a cat, resulting in two creatures joined into one hideous body. "The Substance" actually does give us what "Brundlefly" spoke about (with probably 4 or 5 versions of Elisabeth-Sue joined together in the monster's body.). I don't know if that was referencing that part of "The Fly," but it easily could have been. No doubt there are a great many other references, that I didn't catch. •••• There are parts of the film that are realistic, but most is intentionally stylized: For example, if a creature like The Monster actually did intrude on-stage, during a live TV event in front of an audience, the audience wouldn't respond by attacking it. After the shock, many members would head for the exits, while a combo of staff members and security would recognize the creature as some kind of deformed person. They would gingerly approach her and try to do three things at once: 1) try to establish peaceful 2-way communication, 2) see if medical attention was necessary and/or could be provided, 3) see if they could gently coax/escort her offstage, to a more private location. The writer-director didn't want realism at this moment; the scene is about what the monster is feeling inside, what the onlookers are feeling (revulsion/pity), and what the monster THINKS the onlookers are feeling.

I would say, these movies also...I honestly had low expectations for this. But it had vibes of the first , the thing, evil dead, ex machina, altered states, centipede, the fly, and the Bradly Cooper drug smart movie. And how sick was the 2001 song, as in , birthed to New ape/ birthed to New baby, etc! When Sad part is, the one guy who knew her since 10th grade, has never seen her any other way, but beautiful!

The French are notorious for making some of the most unique films in cinema, and The Substance is a prime example of a pure, uncompromising vision in modern filmmaking. Theme/agenda wise, I have some gripes with it, but it's still a hell of a breath of fresh air in this age of toothless, big-budget nonsense that is slowly but surely being taken over by original, outside the box filmmaking.

I honestly had low expectations for this. But it had vibes of the first the thing, evil dead, ex machina, altered states, centipede, the fly, and the Bradly Cooper drug smart movie. The body gore, lighting, music, camera work , sound effects and score, were all excellent! Dennis was insanely good, Demi was fantastic, and I have to say, the Sue girl was very beautiful! And how sick was the 2001 song, as in , birthed to New ape/ birthed to New baby, etc? The message is: all the normal things, like working out, are perfectly fine and you will be perfectly fine if you accept yourself. But mess with yourself because other peoples' opinion get to you, and you'll just make things bad (like with plastic surgery). The movie is really about self-esteem and being addicted to fame.

This movie is a perfect allegory for entertainment celebrities who, despite being naturally good-enough looking, feel the need to undergo cosmetic surgery due to unreasonable expectations of the entertainment industry or their own unreasonable expectations of themselves. What often happens is that these procedures leave them looking creepy and weird - worse than they looked before.
@norwegianblue201715 күн бұрын
Another really great recent film on this topic is "Skincare", starring Elizabeth Banks. I think it is actually a better movie, if not as Black Mirror as this one is.
@onyx08114 күн бұрын
It's not just the entertainment industry that's to blame, it's also the general public who expect celebrities and even regular people to look young and perfect at all times. If you're a person who has ever left a negative comment about someones appearance on social media then you are part of the problem as well. People need to stop criticizing and putting so much focus on how people look.

It’s kinda funny, I can definitely relate to wanting to be “young” again, even tho I’m in my mid 30s, but I feel a lot older. I was really hard on my body in my teens and 20s, many injuries and doing dumb stuff but I didn’t even get into drugs, I’m sure it’d be much worse if I did. I can’t imagine how I’ll feel when I’m even older though, gonna suck.
