I enjoyed it. I am Japanese. I was impressed by your ambivalent reaction to the theme of this work. Because it seemed to match the concerns that the creator of this work, Miyazaki Hayao, had about this work. In Japan, environmental issues, especially pollution, became social and political issues from the 1960s. It was during this period that Miyazaki Hayao emerged as an anime creator, and in 1978 he directed the TV animation series "Future Boy Conan," a post-apocalyptic story in which civilization is submerged in the distant future. In his later film "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," the pollution of the global environment by civilization was also a major theme. In this work, Ashitaka as a human and San as a spirit end up "living together," but after this work, he tried to take a more advanced solution in "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea." The themes of Hayao Miyazaki's works strongly reflect problems in Japanese society, and this is also a period drama, so I was interested to see how it would be received by people in English-speaking countries. Thank you for a fun time.

You'll find that one of the constant in Miyazaki filmography is the environment and man relation to nature, the others are often a strong heroin and flying. Miyazaki second feature is the 1984 film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (if you watch it, watch the original Japanese version, even if dubbed, and not the American version which cuts 1/5 of the film, named Warriors of the wind). Made before Miyazaki created Ghibli (he actually created the studio with the revenues of Nausicaa), it has all the elements that would be a staple of Ghibli (a heroine, planes and gliders and an earth trying to heal itself after a nuclear Holocaust). Warmly suggested also is Castle in the Sky, the first official Ghibli film that came out in 1985. The most 'blockbuster adventure' film of Ghibli it has it all, flying, pirates, alien technology and giant laser shooting robots. I think the peak of studio Ghibli is with Princess Mononoke and Spirited away. Have to say, the score of Princess Mononoke, ahhhhhhh, so epic.

The scene where he can't chew meat, so he chews and tenderizes the meat himself and transfers it to his mouth is not sickening, but beautiful and wonderful!

20:31 Once a blast furnace is lit, it cannot be extinguished until the work is completed because the metal solidifies as it cools, potentially ruining the furnace.

Got this movie as DVD as a present on my 10th birthday (since I loved Studio Ghibli movies) and didn't get very far before I had to turn it off😅 The beginning scene with the boar god was way too scary for 10yo me. Took me years till I was ready to give the movie another try🙈😅

"See with eyes unclouded by hate." I think the whole movie is war versus peace, love versus hate. Great reaction and I can't wait for your next movie!

I think its less black and white than that. It's why they make Eboshi an understandable character. She's not evil. She's trying to protect her people and shows compassion. But is going about it the wrong way. Same with San and the wolves . It's why Ashitaka never takes a side. He helps anyone. Yet both sides accuse him of working for the other side. Because everyone else sees things in black and white. But Ashitaka can see and appreciate the grey

No we live in a world where the evil off screen emperor has won. Eboshi actually looks after the sick and down trodden.
