This series reminds me a lot of magazines I read as a kid. For me, while I played games, I more often read ABOUT games and kinda imagined them or wondered what they would like, and very often only actually got to play them later. That was the case with both Bubble Bobble 2 and Pirates Gold, where I didn't actually get to play them until the rise of emulation, though I do have a physical cart of Pirates Gold now.

Same here, there are so many games that I only just read about and didn't play until the magic of emulation came along. Most of them turned out to be pretty great. Definitely found a ton of new favorites.

Fun fact about "Pirates! Gold". AI there is extremely dumb and you can pretty much spam with rapier in the duel and win anyway. You can use pinnace or sloop and with minimal crew for same reason with enemy ships and forts. You don't even need cannons, just rush for duel, that's all. Still have my game cart for Sega btw. For comparisson version for NES is harder.

never knew there was a bubble bobble 2 until the 2000's when a friend of mine was trying to get his emulation up and i seen the title and thought it was just a rom hack with how different it was vs the original title, years later its still an obscure title that i have yet to really sit down and play, many of the late NES games with there "part 2" or just being the second game in there series were just way too late at this point with the snes in full swing and the genesis fighting back to be number one... ahh the good old days and the 16 bit war lol

Thanks to Editor Dylan, I now recognize some of the sports games I see at the bargain bins at retro stores that he's made jokes about and am (almost) tempted to grab one just because he made some funnies about it. The stealth aircraft in Jungle Strike is the F-117 Nighthawk, and strangely enough is designated as a fighter aircraft even though it is known primarily for doing bombing missions. It was the precursor to the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning 2 that the US Airforce uses today. The "stealth bomber" most people refer to is the B-2 which is the one that has a "flying wing" design with almost no surfaces to be picked up on radar. As for the helicopter, it looks like a prototype of the RAH-66 Comanche which was a stealth helicopter that was sadly never put into full production.

Someone--not sure if it was a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle--actually bought me(? My dad? My brother?) NFL Football for the SNES, and I forgot about it until now, seeing that box art and the in-game graphics. I had NO idea how to play it. I had NO idea what I was doing; I'd only ever played the more basic football (soccer) games on the Mega Drive, and this one was...complicated. It didn't seem like what I pressed mattered, so I just picked whatever 'play' looked the most colourful and whacky and hit random buttons. I never played it for long. I mean, I had Zelda and Mario. Hell, PLOK was a better choice. It was tough, but at least what I pressed seemed to matter.

I loved Sid Myer's Pirates on the Tandy and the NES. I was incredibly happy when I found a complete Pirates Gold in a Blockbuster liquidating its Genesis titles for $5. I had a fully loaded Genesis/CD/32X, and Pirates Gold would be great in the mushroom tower of power. But, I discovered I couldn't save. I assumed the battery on the cart was dead, and Pirates without being able to save is pretty limited. Fast forward many years, I had detached my 32X and decided to pop in the old Pirates Gold cart. Suddenly it was capable of holding a save. After some experimentation, I found the cartridge properly saved when plugged into the Genesis, but not the 32X. All these years, I'd owned a perfectly functional cart with a good battery and the entire problem was trying to play it through the 32X.

You know it actually makes sense that Sid Meyers Pirates came to the Genesis. When Pirates originally released most PC's (not micros) used the Intel 286 which is a 16-bit processor. While the 386 was available it was generally found in high-end workstations. Honestly, I wish more PC games came to the Genesis with a face-lift like Pirates.
