My concern with this imminent new craze of mounting all the plugs on the back of the motherboard, is that the motherboards that do this will not be compatible with any of the cases currently available globally. I mean, even if we assume that all of the ports are going to be in the exact same location on the board, just on the rear, there a re absolutely zero PC cases that I can think of right now, that will accommodate boards like this i.e. no cases with grommets in the right locations, and I bet that for a while, the standoffs supplied will not be tall enough to lift the motherboard enough to run the cables behind in order to connect to the reversed sockets

I think all motherboards should come with 3 DRGB headers as 12V isn't needed as much. I am a fan of a all white build and MSI needs to bring back their B650m Mortar in White as they downsized the Project Zero Vs. the Mortar. One thing I am not happy with on a lot of the MSI boards like the Mortar is it only comes with 6 Layer PCB.

I am in agreement with Paul's Hardware from back in Computex. Due to their incredibly limited compatibility, this just feels like a unnecessary investment. Why fix what isn't broken? Are we seriously going down the Jensen Huang route of "all screws and cables are ugly!" and hide everything instead of actually providing good price-to-performance and actually meaningful features? What about extension cables, which may add a last touch of color to a build? I don't know. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't get this trend. It doesn't even hide all cables anyways, like fan cables or GPU cables (Asus hides it, but that is a whole other can of worms). The only major positive I can see is that PSU cables can be made way shorter, which leads to a direct price decrease for PSUs, at the cost of potentially increasing price for motherboards due to them using more heatsinks to cover up the naked bits of the PCB where the plugs used to be.

I see this really as a step forward, imagine you have x amount of layers in the PCB and now can cram more stuff on a smaller board. This makes the "reachability" of the connectors different. You will still need to run cables to/from your graphics card and, if you choose so, from your cooling block. What if they started a new trend and the PCI slot for the GPU would include power delivery? Maybe PCIe 6.0? Just some thoughts as a seek my brainz.
@constantinosschinas4503 Жыл бұрын
Passing an extra 500W (or X times the gpus) through the board would certainly be an issue. What they could do is maybe have a passthrough pci 6.0 power port in a convienient spot near the slot?
@aelaan12 Жыл бұрын
@@constantinosschinas4503 That is a fascinating perspective, I hope the world keeps inventing. I think that this MSI idea is just the beginning, today only few cases can harbor this motherboard. The cases would become more bulky in width as they can get shorter in vertical height.
@constantinosschinas4503 Жыл бұрын
@@aelaan12 I think cases are already thick enough to accomodate this. Most if not all, have cable management on the back of the board, or even psus etc. They mostly need to add the proper holes around the perimeter of the motherboard.

The case selection for this and its B760M counter part isn't great. Most of them look like ATX cases or event E-ATX. Such a waste with a Micro-ATX board. I like the concept. Combined with a Corsair SHIFT PSU you could do all your wiring on the back.

A lot of the connectors that would work would have to be "L" type connectors or you would need taller standoffs to provide adequate clearance to plug in the usb 3.2 Gen 1 header or the Gen 2 type-c connectors. Finding a case that has a large enough opening so you can be able to eyeball the back of the mother board and visually see if all necessary cables are properly plugged in before closing the case and discovering it won't power on cause you missed something.
