I'd like to see what happens when a Norway rat is captured. Or one of your ground squirrels. Mr Pack rat looks pretty docile once captured. Doesn't really seem to work the trap, trying to get out.

I don't think a squirrel would stay trapped. My regular haveaheart trap I occasionally catch them, and they are grabbing and pulling everything.

Yeah, but Havahart traps are built pretty solidly, and those wires don't flex much at all. I use two of them for squirrel "relocation" regularly. I've even caught one REALLY ANGRY groundhog, and it kept that one under control as well.

What is to stop a rat (or mouse) grabbing the top of the flap and pulling it down? Also it seems wide enough that when one enters, a bunch could leave.

the lever doors are more effective than snap shut ones because they don't need to be reset for multiple catches and the second chamber is prevent new catches from releasing older ones, but yes both things are possible. The bigger issue is it won't catch mice

Looks like it's only good for rats or other similar size critters, I've actually seen this in human size, where in a two or more floor building where they lock all the hall doors as a one-way that leads into a stairwell, and they chained the building exit doors from inside, so once you walk-in you can't walk out. Unless your a smart rat that carries a multi tool and takes apart the crashbar handle. Lol Have a great day, carry a multitool

A catch-and-release trap that puts mice and rats into the same catchment area is a pretty dumb idea anyway, kill traps are far more humane.

Yes, it occurred to me that the gap large enough for mice to squeeze through might actually be an intentional design choice as it stops that dangerous cross species contact.

That's actually a good observation. Domestic mice and the house mouse are the same species, mus musculus. But the domestic version is larger than the wild version. Domesticated animals of all species are usually very different from their wild cousins.

This trap is junk. The rat could have easily escaped when the mouse entered because the doors are not sufficiently one-way.
