I have to be honest, I've hated unison for a long time now and everything they've done is absolutely scummy. But my personal opinion is that this is actually a good plugin for the fact it's free and it has a very good vinyl emulation. I have a LOT of paid tape emulation and pitch fluctuation / lofi plugins and this one is actually my go to rn, I don't fuck with the company at all but I have to say you can't always blindly hate on anything anyone does just because they're a scummy company. I will still give someone props if they put out something decent / useful even if I don't like the company / brand behind it or the person.

Unison is the worst company in the music industry. The predatory practices, b.s. promotions, exorbitant pricing for basic fx chains, etc. But we gotta be real...the plugin is free, the fx sound good, and it accomplishes the task with significantly lower CPU usage than RC-20. The knobs are stupidly named as usual, and you have to jump through idiotic hoops to unlock all the presets, but it does what it says it does, and its a fairly competent plug all around. Still hate them though 😂

The problem with this plugin, what type of music was it made for? Music is subjective, you can make anything sound good. The zen master is stupid and not needed. However the low quality, if I were to do a chiptune song, I could make it work. Sounds perfect 😂. Though if it's marketed to the wrong people then no, it won't work. Though if I were to do a chiptune heavy metal song like machinae supremacy, this would be pretty awesome with a synth mix of modern and old chiptune sounds. I could see that.

Hmmmm...so, why give these clowns the time of day? If I'm going to hold up plugins to show people the capabilities of VSTs, there's far better free VSTs than pretty much all of Unison's clickbaity junk put together. Case in point: Analog Obsession. AO's stuff is solid, easy on the CPU load, and their results actually DO give you the sound of the original you-can't-afford-its. All free. A suite that exactly emulates devices such as the Fairchild 660 (with extra "behind the panel" tweaks) or TAB W395 FOR FREE. And yet... TBH, we have a hardware parallel to Unison Audio. It's called "Behringer". Sometimes very good (the 2600 is beyond very good, actually...it sounds exactly like a new rev.4 did back when they were still on the market), but just as capable of being ridiculous... perhaps even more so (the "Kirn incident" being a prime example). I really wish that these companies would learn some effin' manners. You now have music firms recruiting people who can't and WON'T behave, and when I have a choice, I always choose firms to throw my money at whose staff is fully housebroken. This is, for instance, why I own and use an Argon8 instead of a Hydrasynth; I have no desire whatsoever to deal with companies who treat basic "where's the synth I paid for 6+ months ago?" queries as if they were coming from some secret hAxx0r MI...uh...group...? Anyway, I haven't the patience to deal with middle-management paranoias, so Modal got the cash. Same applies here. Even if Unison were to discard every clickbaity aspect, devious marketing practices, and their history of going off on legit criticism (ala Ave McCree's trouble with them...not the first time they've done something brutal and disproportionate to a legit critique), I STILL wouldn't touch anything Unison had a hand in. Sometimes lines get crossed by companies after criticism...but it seems that all they know to do and how to communicate comes from similar hype-driven fears... probably of getting figured out when someone inevitably takes the lid off of these "miracle" plugins to find what's REALLY running behind those nonendearingly mislabeled controls. I have my suspicions...

And in music, you don't tend to have those "insti-fixes". It pushes the whole idea that anyone can do music...which is true, but only up to a point at which the training wheels have got to GO. It's a process. You create, the creation informs you, then you take a tip or three from it for the next go-around when you do it all over again...albeit that you're now a bit more savvy from the previous work. Then lather, rinse, repeat. So while Unison themselves are pure comedy, the fact that they massively overhype their junk as being THE FIX isn't the funny part. It claims to be a solution...but to something that actually HAS NO "solutions", namely how any one person approaches harmony, melody, rhythm, and so on. That's 100% on the musician; there aren't any boxes to pop open for a perfect result (and here, I think the companies who make "celebrity 1-knobs" are doing a similar disservice), and time and effort are the key in actuality. That being said...damn, that's a stupid AF interface on that thing. I bet more time was spent on that rather than the code in those generic effects behind it. Unison's clearly got their priorities straight there!
