I kinda hate how Creepypastas convinced people that lost media is disturbing and scary when most of it is cheesy kids shows. I’m genuinely passionate about media preservation and recovering lost media, but it gets so annoying when every discussion of it has to be some overhyped, exaggerated “and then there was hyperrealistic blood on the screen” “my uncle worked at Nickelodeon and they sealed this movie in a vault because it was SO DISTURBING” deal.

Meanwhile, the beginning of SpongeBob's lost episode with the walking animation scared the heck out of me, pretty much until I was an adult. But I don't know enough about the state of the internet back then to know if that was intentional or not.
@milo-ru3hc8 ай бұрын
I remember about 10 years ago discussing a kids’ show with my friends (we were in high school at the time). We all remembered the same details of a girl in a blue wig, a talking clock, and the most important detail: the girl was tiny, and lived between the pages of a book. We couldn’t remember the title, and tried some googling, but Wikipedia’s list of shows from that network definitely did not include the show we remembered. Eventually I found a single forum post referencing the same tiny blue haired girl living in a book, which at least convinced us we weren’t crazy. We gave up there but it still bothered me. Turns out other people wanted to find it too, and in 2019 someone found clips from the show! My Special Book, from 1998! It felt good to have an answer and it didn’t need to be some dark spooky mystery at all.

"Why would someone record a VHS of a movie that they haven't seen before..." Because people aren't home all day and some VCRs could be set to record on a timer.
@kuramayoko236 ай бұрын
It was the best way to see something you either wouldn't be home for and you could fast forward commercials. My family and I recorded things all the time. Best part was, if we ended up not liking it, you could just record over it. You'd have to deal with the old recording's audio or visual bleeding through the new one but that was how it worked back then.

When I was in my small Catholic neighborhood school in Pittsburgh, an announcement was made on the P.A. to please pray for an 8th grader involved in an accident. Turns out one of the “bad boys” got his leg amputated while the kids in my neighborhood were jumping off overhead trestles onto the slow moving trains. A regular pastime for the older kids, almost a rite of passage? 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️Anyway. It’ll sit waiting to get used again. I’ve been privy to so many music industry XML spreadsheets of beautifully cataloged items that haven’t been seen since they aired 25-30 years ago but they’re sitting in Iron mountain, or a storage space in Burbank California.
