Ten years ago Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE, with their friend Michel DJOMO GUISS, started installing trap cameras, monitored by a sensitive infrared motion sensor motion detector, in a remote region of the Nyonié rainforest in Gabon, near the equator line and not far from the Atlantic Ocean coast. In the first videos of a group of chimpanzees, they noticed the presence of an adult one-handed male, without his right hand and without part of his forearm. Could it have been caught in a cable trap or a poacher's leg-hold trap? I have a doubt because these traps are intended to keep their prey prisoner before it is picked up by the poacher. However, in this case the section of arm being clear, I rather imagine the leopard's jaw when this primate was a baby. He has overcome his disability and his behaviour is identical to that of the other members of the group. Curious to know if he was climbing trees and swinging from branch to branch, we placed trap cameras directed at the canopy in the area where this group was most frequently filmed on the ground. But to date, no results have been achieved.
Then, in front of some trap cameras, we installed large mirrors (+/- 244X122cm) to film the reaction of wild animals to the presence of their reflection and its evolution during repeated exposures. As in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate in mammals and in birds: it results from a training in the mirror which, in species that may recognize themselves, is very long because, unlike in humans, their parents have not recognized themselves and do not speak to explain the properties of a mirror to their children.
In front of these mirrors, these chimpanzees spend many hours observing their reflection in the serenity of the jungle. The behaviour of some of these primates even suggests that they recognize themselves in their reflection. However, to be more formal, the cameras recorded only one unrepeated use of a mirror to look at parts of their body that they cannot see without their help, for example the inside of the mouth or the rump.
For an unknown reason, linked to his trauma? the one-handed chimpanzee stays away from the mirrors and very rarely participates in this learning process. Most of the time he runs near a mirror by tapping his feet on the ground and by slapping with cupped hand on the ground., anxiety replaces serenity and for some less advanced in their learning, their reflection becomes an unknown invader.
--------------

This one-armed chimpanzee for over 10 years, one of the dominant males in the chimpanzee group in the area, does not need any help. He is certainly much happier free among his congeners than imprisoned in a zoo for life in pens or cages with the only distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars. This alpha (dominant or silverback) chimpanzee is much more aggressive than his congeners. This may be due to his handicap. The other chimpanzees have moved out of his way without complaining or counter-attacking him, because he has a right to respect because of his status. One would have thought that seeing the reflection of a one-armed chimpanzee in the mirror would have helped him to understand the properties of the mirror. For some unknown reason, related to his trauma, this one-armed chimpanzee stays away from mirrors and very rarely participates in this learning process. Most of the time, he runs near a mirror, tapping his feet on the floor and tapping his hand on the floor. anxiety replaces serenity and for some less advanced learners, their reflection becomes an unknown invader. Very interesting! I wish it was possible to talk about what's in his mind during those moments. As someone with a physical disability myself, I definitely understand the urge to lose my cool sometimes...I wonder if he's feeling what I sometimes feel when confronting my limitations

In his brain, doesn't this one-armed man associate the mirror with the trauma he suffered? Hence his fear, his irritability towards these intruders in his forest?
@Lady8D
@Lady8D 4 жыл бұрын
Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE Perhaps. For me personally looking in the mirror doesn't bring to mind my past trauma but my current struggles. If he feels as we do then I would guess that seeing himself in the mirror reminds him of his disability, whereas away from the mirror he's learned to overcome it. Then, once reminded of his disability & weakness he seems to feel the need to lash out at whoever's around - kind of like "I'll show you who's weak as I beat you up" It seems as though away from the mirror he's able to forget his difference and in front of the mirror he's suddenly very reminded of it again and afraid his buddies are thinking of it as much as he suddenly is. I hope that makes sense =)
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that makes sense but I dont think that front of a mirror he is yet self-aware and so the mirror cannot remind him of his disability
@Lady8D
@Lady8D 4 жыл бұрын
Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE I think I see what you were saying before about him associating the mirror with his trauma but I don't know, I'd think he'd only associate the mirror with his trauma if the mirror was somehow involved in his trauma. It's quite interesting to see how he interacts with the others both in front of and away from the mirror - I hope one day we can learn to communicate with them as we do each other...wishful thinking, I know. I still hope for it though.

They do start to realize that they are seeing themselves. It's a process and some of them are smarter than others, just as in humans, some seem more superstitious of the mirrors or angry and others are quite interested. But most animals who find these mirrors end up enjoying them. One of my favourites is the video in which the elephants do NOT want to share the mirror with a leopard!

If you look closely at this dominant male chimpanzee, he had part of his forearm amputated: Perhaps by the jaws of a leopard as an infant or he put his hand in a leg-hold trap whose powerful jaws eventually cut off part of his forearm as he struggled to pull it out. Quite intriguing. I am somewhat reminded of a single child that does not want a brother or sister. Some children feel they will receive less attention and love from the group or parents. Surely, he must comprehend that this new stranger is also an amputee.

My first thought was that it could be Mweya from Ngogo who lost his hand because of a trap but when I searched up the location of Gabon and the Kibale National park I'm not sure if this could be possible. Is it even possible that a chimpanzees troop wander this far?
@XHB06400CANNES
@XHB06400CANNES 4 жыл бұрын
Between Gabon and the Kibale National Park there are more than 2300 km, so it is unbelievable that Mweya de Ngogo and his troop of chimpanzees ventured this far because in the case of chimpanzees that are territorial primates, the territory measures no more than about 50 Km2. Is the location of the cut exactly at the same level of the forearm? Is Mweya also an alpha male whose handicap has made him an aggressive individual? Such a comment encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion. It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long description in addition to the published images. It's a choice. Thank you again. Watch our other videos of the channel and don't forget to read the description each time. You will learn some very important information. kzbin.infovideos.
