I bought this course and I can honestly say that this is the best investment I have made in terms of owning a dog. Your comprehensive course covered many things that are not normally covered in detail in the KZbin videos. I live in a town in Texas where’s there’s no qualified trainers within a 60 mile radius so your course was very helpful.

Our local dog clubs use outdated methods which did not feel right at all for our beloved home pet, so we are very excited that although we can't attend your classes in person, we can follow your clearly structured modern training course to know exactly where to begin with our recently adopted puppy. YESSSS!!!! Signed up before I was one minute in. I have always loved my fur babies regardless of their "issues", like my lab I adopted from the shelter who cost us over 15,000 in vet bills from eating inedible things by the time old age got him (can you guess why he was in the shelter?). My current canine companions are barky and get into things when given the chance, and I have no doubt that they will benefit from more structure even more than I will :-) My future doggos will be started off on the right foot when they come home, whether puppies or adults. Thanks for all you do!

Hello from the Netherlands! I'm about to adopt a shelter pup and since this will be my first dog, I've been watching all of your videos in preparation. I think you do a great job at keeping the videos accessible while not talking down to people or leaving out information in order to keep it simple; everything is clear and makes sense. I would not have been able to afford the course on top of all the other things I still have to get before the dog moves in, so this Black Friday deal could not have come at a better time. Thank you so much Ian. I live in Canada and I was super excited when I saw you offered an online course! I ordered it right away. It's everything I hoped it would be. I love how you teach and the bond you share with your dogs. Sadly, I had to say goodbye to my nearly 14 year old Boston terrier, Robbie, in November. At the end of May I fell hard for a rescue Sheltie/labrador pup, named Finn. He's 6 months old and we are starting to practice your lessons. I'm struggling a bit because he already completed puppy class with his Foster using a different training style which has fallen apart recently in the sense that he will sit or lay down for me, but slooowly. And since I'm not a fan of the leash corrections to stop pulling on walks (that he was previously trained to heel with and isn't working for me anyway), I've stopped the walks until I can work through it with your exercises. Feels wrong to stop his walks, but I am doing everything I can to exercise him mentally and physically in the mean time (yard play, stubbys, stuffed kong, hide and seek, dog play dates). He is a fast energetic pup when he feels like it, but he isn't super motivated during the focus training. Finn isn't all that food motivated..won't eat kibble as treats (liver dusted), so-so on liver and soft training treats. My Boston was a big food lover, so this is weird for me. LOL. Not sure if I need to find more appealing treats or I just need to keep at it (which I will regardless). He is very sweet, well behaved and always comes when called, so that is excellent! We will keep plugging away at it! Thanks for all that you do!

This is awesome!!! I'm reading through the class description, and I have a question that I hope you are able to answer! Will this class be helpful for an owner who has a dog that is fairly advanced in basic obedience? My 1-year-old Jack Russell is reliable on most of the obedience topics listed in the class breakdown, but I still feel there are some things we can work on at home such as jumping on counters. (Classes we have taken focus on behavior in public versus behavior around the home.) If this class may not be the best fit for a pair like us, do you have some other classes in the works that we can look out for?

Hey there! I think you're probably thinking right: this wouldn't be a good fit for you. I'm afraid it might double up on a lot of the things you already have under your belt and I certainly wouldn't want to waste your time or money. We don't currently have any online classes in development for things like jumping (at least not soon). I do a seminar now and then but that doesn't help you either! For right now we have a jumping PDF on the website you could check out: www.simpawtico-training.com/learning/downloadables/

@SimpawticoDogTraining

Hi Ilya! The best resource is to point you to the trainer searches on the big professional organizations. All of these can be done with custom zip code searches. I'd start with the CCPDT: www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/ This is the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. These will be probably among the most qualified. They'll all be CPDT-KA (like me) or CBCC-KA. There’s also the IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants): m.iaabc.org/consultant/ You could also try the Karen Pryor Academy: karenpryoracademy.com/find-a-trainer/#!directory/map All of the Karen Pryor people will be certified through that school as KPA-CTP. And finally, you could give the Association of Professional Dog Trainers a try: apps.apdt.com/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?webcode=TrainerSearch I'd do the APDT last because not everyone listed will be a certificate holder of some sort. That's not always a guarantee of high quality, of course, but the field is definitely full of highs and lows. GOOD LUCK!

Question: I will be getting a new pup over the weekend and I'm thinking of getting a faux grass potty pad for the initial stages of house training. I live in an apartment complex and in a cold state, so would putting the pee pad out on the balcony be a good option for quick bathroom trips. I've heard concerns of pee pads because it can encourage the dog to go in the house, but if the pad is in open air and has the texture of grass, would this be avoided?
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 5 жыл бұрын
There's a spatial preference as well, so you could ostensibly train your dog to always go on the balcony. As for the faux grass...it's worthless. A dog can absolutely tell the difference between grass and fake grass. If you want your dog to eventually pee on grass, get REAL grass up there. If you want to always use the balcony, then use whatever you want out there, but be as consistent as anybody who lives in a regular house with a yard would be. Check out our Potty Training PDF on our website: www.simpawtico-training.com/learning/downloadables/

I just purchased this course the other night in preparation for our little Coton de Tulear coming on June 3rd and I've been doing a module a night. I have 2 questions though, please. When can I start this training? He'll be between 8-9 weeks when we get him. Should I start within the first few days once he's settled in? I am home all day so I'd planned to do a few 5-minute sessions a day but I don't want to start if he's too young. Also, I feel like I'm going to be feeding a ton of treats multiple times a day. How do I ensure he doesn't get fat with all these rewards he's going to get? I was planning to use 'supercharged kibbled' as per your video and take a portion of his daily allotment of food, but for the high reward treats I'm worried he's going to pork up! I was thinking boiled chicken? Thanks so much! I've really been so impressed by your videos.

I've been watching all your videos in anticipation of getting our first dog in a few months. We have a situation where the dog my young kids (7&9)are most familiar with is my mother-in-law's 4-year-old havashu. Unfortunately, her dog has had little-to-no training and does not make a good role model for pet management I need suggestions for teaching my kids how best to help train a dog. Is it possible to train someone else's dog? This would be good practice for them, if so.
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kat. I'll tell you...training someone else's dog is what I do 40 hours a week and it's completely contingent on the owner continuing the work, or one of two things happen: 1) the dog never improves (most likely), or 2) is perfect for me and completely treats the owner like an annoyance. I think for the situation you're describing where your kids can get involved, you probably won't make much traction on extended skills like walking or come. But quick little things like Leave It, or better Sits and Downs, or even Get Off will probably give you all a taste and help you hone your timing and communication. It's not a bad arena to practice in and it can only make you better!

Does this course make it clear how long it would take to train on different things? That’s one thing I see missing from a lot of dog training videos - it says what to do and how to do it but doesn’t set clear expectations in how long it may take to train depending on the temperament or breed of dog. Without clear expectations it’s easy to give up or feel like your dog is untrainable. So that’s the reason I’m asking if the online course lets us know what to expect in terms of how long it may take to train different things. Thanks in advance for responding and thanks for all the helpful videos!
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 5 жыл бұрын
We give you a ballpark, but it's absolutely impossible to set a time expectation on this. Not only is every dog a different learner with their own aptitudes and interests, but owners are more or less skilled at delivery. Not to mention the time spent practicing. I've seen people do the same training in a few days that took others a few weeks. It's completely subjective to the learner and the teacher.

Hi Ian! I'm a dog walker in Toronto. When I first started my business I watched all your videos obsessively so I'm totally down to take this course. 2 questions though: would you say its a good fit for someone like me who has had tons of experience working with dogs already or does the course cover really basic beginner techniques? Secondly, would you say everything covered in the course follows a force-free ethic? Thanks so much!!
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Leha! That's an interesting question: on the surface it DOES cover basic beginner stuff, but deeper down I don't think many others teach the finer details like I do. I don't know what your experience has been but I like to think you'd still get something out of it. I hope that doesn't come off like a sales pitch! I think the pieces about motivation and bond-building are really the pillars of the course, not necessarily the mechanical results (although those hopefully are stellar afterwards!). Finally, yes, it's a force free ethic. Like I said, huge on motivation and cooperation. That said, there is a section where we discuss how to deal with Oppositional Pressure Response. Our view is that even if you're not a "pressure trainer" your dog and your system will experience pressure somewhere/somehow so if we come up with, again, cooperative and supportive (and preemptive) rehearsals so we can deal with it without stress accumulation or getting confrontational, I think that's very productive. In the course we show how, as you continue to work together, even this disappears until you're both totally in synch together. I hope that makes sense and I hope it helps!

My six years old Caucasian shepherd dog bites anyone who touches him when he is eating. He even broke an emnploee's finger when brushing his mingled hair. I was bitten once too. He scares people in store. I have a two years old son. I am thinking about sending the dog to home of stray animals because I am concerned the safety of my family.

Definitely this is an unsafe situation. That's a serious case; don't mess around with it. Call a local pro, or a rescue, or a shelter. With a bite history the outcome in a shelter is not good, but unless you're 110% dedicated to keeping the dog and working (under the guidance of a professional in your area), I would recommend you look very hard at this situation. No easy path, for sure, and I'm so sorry to hear about it!
