I thought so too; when you blur the scene to the point where it's impossible to tell what's going on, a lot is left to the player's imagination, and without the needed context to know what's supposed to be happening, that imagination can run wild and coniure up something far worse than was intended.

I truly believe you can not make a game like Dead Space "more accessible." This is simply a case of "If you like it, you like it, if you don't you really don't have to play it." i totally get what you're saying and agree to an extent! but from personal experience i can tell you some people have a hard time with some of the most graphic/intense parts of horror games but really love the genre. I know, it's a bad combo. Some things you really can't control about yourself even if u want to. However, this implementation doesn't do the intent justice. It feels like a half baked attempt by a developer who thought the idea was a lost cause (and maybe it was, but I appreciate when games do implement things like this well)

This reeks of some high level executive who thought the problem with normal censorship, was that it skipped over content, and really, in order for a wider consumer base to not feel left out, the general details had to be preserved. So, some team of underpaid staffers were told to go in with a hammer and patch things up, because they thought it was stupid. Its probably why so many of their solutions are so half assed, it reeks of 'follow the letter of the law, but not the spirit'.

There's three scenes I can recall where it occurs, possibly more I'm forgetting. @@Echo81Rumple83 To be entirely accurate, it's not that the advertisers have youtube by the balls, but that youtube just doesn't have a pair to begin with. From the perspective of advertisers, the fact that you enjoy horror content, or cursing, or gore, or any number of other things youtube disallows/punishes, is just another point of information they can use to target ads more accurately to a person, increasing the odds that you'll buy the product and give them more money. That is the sort of information that youtube and other tech giants SELL to advertisers. These rules are purely on youtube, and it's just that they'd rather shift the blame than own up to it.

As funny as this is, it’s super inspiring for me as an artistic creator. The idea of a horror outlet (game, movie, series etc) where all of the creatures are HEAVILY blurred, to the point where you can’t make out anything other than their colours behind this big blurry square, is really scary! Like some kind of amnesia-esque, weird, mind trippy thing, where the monsters are on screen a lot of the time, and they’re horrifically killing people and mutilating them, but it can’t be seen *at all*. This would especially be even scarier if (unlike the game) it wouldn’t show the bodies of the people the monsters killed, you can just barely see the injuries and a large amount of red behind the blur, and the survivors react in horror.

Reminds me of one of the games Iron Pineapple covered in his soulslike dumpster diving series, which is based on Lovecraftian horror and all monsters are procedurally generated - you can't even tell what you're fighting, they're just a mess of limbs and eyes flailing around. Combining that with the same "looking at the monsters physically hurts you" mechanics from Amnesia would probably go pretty well together?

There was an option to turn off gore in that game, and made it so that whenever you shot and killed an enemy, they exploded with flowers instead, just a fountain of flowers. I think THAT option should exist in more modern video games, frankly.

The really shoddy implementation of this in the player deaths really makes me agree that it was handed down from above and they either didn't have enough time to do this properly, or couldn't be bothered. A (maybe) easy fix that would let the option make sense is to basically use "minecraft logic". You don't see any blood, you don't see any parts getting dismembered, when anyone gets hurt or anything then npcs/ characters simply lose hp and the models stay intact, and when character/npc's die then they simply flop over. Would look pretty stupid but would actually make it "less disturbing" and have it make sense.
