The biggest issue I have with soapcalc is it doesn't take into account any adjustments - would be nice if it gave you the additional SH needed if you decide to add citric acid to your soap or how much hardness does adding sodium lactate add.

That looks like fun. Thank you for sharing your recipe. I'm nor a soaper so some of the terms you used regarding the oven went right over my head. I do understand what the gel phase is. I've only made soap three times. I figured it's only natural I start making soap at least for our own personal use since I make a lot of stuff that uses the same ingredients minus the lye and water. Very pretty soap and I love the colors.

I have issues with soap calc... I kept adjusting my recipe to fall within those INS numbers at levels I liked and despite having 32% coconut, 10% Shea, 10% Cocoa butter, 10% palm and the rest being liquid oils (olive, hemp and castor) and having clay, sodium lactate, coconut milk and other additives that should've produced an amazing soap based on those numbers actually made almost worthless soaps. Made on April first this year, I made this oil blend with a couple of adjustments for a couple of different designs and all 3 of them are too soft still! I had soaps that are 2 days old that were firmer than these 6 week old ones 😕 I went back to my old recipe and tried the numbers and they weren't great on the ins chart (this recipe was originally formulated with Bramble Berry calculator when I was first learning how to calculate my own). It's perfect every time I make it, and it's super sudsy, creamy and lovely. So now I only use soap calc to see what it says then challenge it 😂 plus it makes for an easy to read format and looks all professional 😂 I appreciate your video on actually calculating it on your own, I never thought to do that strangely enough (everyone tells you to go to soap calc etc to do it, never thought to try myself despite writing my own recipe right out of the gate).

you are quite right ... an all round base recipe that can do swirls, layers, dough would be awesome for UK & Europe alike ... thank you for sharing ... I'm still looking for the perfect recipe and used 50 % olive, 31% coconut and 19% palm ... on 02/03/2021 ... my notes say 'slimy - nice bubbles' ... I'm going to try your work horse next ... and see if I like that ratio better ... I have started using Kaolin in my recipes ... just to see if I like the end result better .. so far the 3 different recipes I've made using it have turned out quite brittle and have been ready to unmold within hours ... and despite me CPOPing they don't look like they have gelled ... but I am using about 1tsp with a total oil content of 270g ... wondering if I am using too much kaolin for my micro batch ... I really don't want to turn around one day to find a soap mountain of crappy soap ... and I am having a whole bunch of fun ... if I didn't say it before ... I missed your refreshing take on soap making ... pity you are not able to educate on UK/Europe assessments/regulations ... what a minefield and I'm not even at that stage yet ...
@codybrookehanson2346
@codybrookehanson2346 3 жыл бұрын
If you need help with all of those regulations, really good channels are I Dream in Soap, Sussex Handmade Soap, and Tiggy Makes / Future Primitive. Tiggy had her soap recipe available for purchase on Etsy and it's been approved (though of course you still have to go through that process yourself). I've got a bit of a Soap mountain, I've been able to sell it and keep/give away the uglies. I have 4 kids and a mechanic minded husband, we use soap 😂

@@codybrookehanson2346 I do thank you for those awesome suggestions ... I am already subscribed ... I have found also Edensecret1 and Soap School so if you haven't discovered those yourself and are intersted in UK soapmakers then I recommend them ... it is a great shame however that there are only 5 regular contributors from the UK whereas I am currently subscribed to over 30 soap making channels 2 of those are Australian, 5 are UK, a couple are Canadian and the rest are USA based ... I find it very strange that there appears to be so much freedom in such a stereotypical litigious nation as the USA ... I assume that their authorities expect the threat of litigation will ensure safe practices are maintained ... self regulation seems to work well ... however, the UK & by extension Europe err on the side of 'you can only sell products you have completed a triple twist somersault and landed on your feet ... oh and paid for the privilege' ... and this new assessment (post 2013 = new) is not only costly in a time of great hardship it is restrictive almost to the point of 'what is the point' ... so coming late to the party and missing out on the "flexible assessment" which lucky Tiggy and Edensecret1 benefit from and therefore their advice is rendered obsolete ... really does require a little more guidance ... to be fair Anne from the Sussex company is currently trying to address this ... and for that I am most grateful .. Lisa Cunningham is also addressing this ... it is a great burden on so few contributers ... so I do enjoy all of Mrs Soap & Clay's soap making videos (I will leave the non soapy product videos for now ... but I look forward to watching them when I am ready to engage ... for now I am only interested in soap .. once I have mastered it to my own satisfaction I may consider other products ... bath bombs spring to mind ;)

This was the first recipe I used and totally agree - it’s undervalued on paper but amazing in person. I’ve had a coffee soap on my list for a while now - thanks for the push to do it. Do you ever add ground coffee to add some scrubbies? Also did you not add FO/EO and if not, is the coffee smell strong? Loving year two! Thanks for the reminder to subscribe ;)

@@MrsSoapAndClay Thank you for responding! On my adventure to learn the soap making process I used SoapCalc today and from a noob perspective I thought it was odd that it doesn't have an option to put the size mold to provide all the proportions for you but instead I needed to jump back and forth between the calculator and the view recipe. Don't get me wrong it seems like a great tool as a guide but everyone needs a mold and everyone must have an idea what "total" weight will be needed to fill the mold before they start. Am I missing something?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 4 ай бұрын
They should have a calculator for mold volume, you’re right! So eventually you’ll start using the same few molds over and over and you’ll just know how much soap batter is needed, but in the beginning you can do it two ways. One, put the mold on a scale and fill it with water. That weight will tell you how much soap batter (so everything - lye, water, oils, etc) is needed for that mold. You can then fiddle around with the oil amounts until the recipe totals the weight you’re going for. This is good for molds that aren’t squares or rectangles. Second, you can figure it out via the volume. So measure the mold, multiply length by width by height, and multiply that number by .40. That will give you the amount of OILS you need, which you plug in at the top of soapcalc and the software will adjust lye and water based on the types of oils you select.

I never thought of doing a in the mold swirl🤦‍♀️. This looks amazing! A couple of questions... 1 The last couple of weeks, when I like you videos, it unlikes after about 5 minutes. Im wondering if thats you or youtube doing that? I do know Im kinda being a creepy stalker binge watching, so If its you, I get it. B The last couple of weeks my soap batter has thicken really quick and I have to blob into the mold but then its too soft to texture the top. This has never happened before with the same recipe. Could it be from our weird weather being super humid which is really odd for us do you think?

Hey! I definitely can’t control the likes, so I’m gonna go with a KZbin glitch! As a binge watcher of content myself, I approve. 😂 Your soaping environment could bring the gremlins to the soaping experience; maybe use a bit more water or hand whisk to emulsion and see if that helps?

So as far as what palm does in soap, I would recommend babassu as a replacement. That is another type of palm, really, but it's a longer story as to why it's accepted over palm. If not babassu, I would go with coconut oil + stearic acid, or a number of butters + stearic acid. Have fun!
