When I went Keto, I put my Golden on grain free kibble thinking I was helping him. Grain free lacks taurine, found in meat. Taurine is sorely lacking in most kibble as it is, let alone grain free. Dogs were suffering from heart attacks and heart disease from eating a grain free diet. The fillers used to replace grains were much worse and full of starches. Dogs do not need pea protein or fruit! The only carbs found in wolves' diets in the wild were the partially digested carbs in the stomachs of their prey. Why would a domesticated dog need any carbs? My Golden suffered bad skin before the switch, stinky yeast feet that smelled like Fritos, but cancer after the switch. When I realized it was my fault, I did my research and found My Pet Carnivore out of Indianapolis Indiana. Their website explains the dietary needs of canines and felines. Anyway, he lived 6, almost 7 years after the cancer was removed. He had suffered from severe nerve damage in his hindquarters and couldn't potty, so I had to let him go.

Lost our bully Vanna due to the grain free kibble that we thought was good for her. Had a heart attack and died face down in her bowl one morning at 5 years old. Had an autopsy done and found she had the kind of heart attack associated with the grain free diet. So sad and made us so mad that Vets push this garbage. I'm doing so well on carnivore after 4 months I'm down 65 lbs. Gonna try this with our dogs. Didn't ever think about it until now

Just a sad and stupid story...when I lived in Alasks near Homer, there was a hippie woman who decided her dog needed to be a vegean like she was. The poor dog started to lose it's hair, weight and energy. We finally had to rescue this dieing dog. So she tied it up outside the grocery store one day and we rescued the dog and the police cited her for animal cruelty!! It took a few months of real animal protein to reverse this poor dog's health. She got her dog back but had to feed it meat and we monitored her !! She was a very uninformed human. BTW, her health was in the toilet because of her insane vegan diet but you can't stop people from eating stupid! We don't have dog catchers.

Do you freeze the food for at least a week to kill any bacteria before you feed? I agree with what you are saying, but there is the added step of flash freezing for extra safety. I only feed raw, btw.

What I learned from feeding my cats a species appropriate, homemade diet, many years ago actually informed my thoughts on carnivore diet later in life when I ended up with health issues. I enjoyed watching how you make your fur baby's food. My spoiled little dog and the cat have gotten homemade food for over a year now and the vet is surprised on how well they are doing. Lulu (the dog) had joint issues, weight problems, and tartar on her teeth... all gone now. They are complete raw carnivores since when I tried adding veggies to the dog's diet (I never added them to the cat food) she would eat around them or spit them out. She didn't have any problems adjusting.

I do the same but put a lid on it (upside down ‘cause the pot won’t fit in my oven unless I do), and stick it in the oven for 2 hrs on 180c. Stirring half way through. Greetings from Australia.

We've noticed the difference each time we've changed our cats' food closer to a proper feline diet. When we got married 20 years ago, my husband had a cat and he just ate kibble most of the time with occasional tinned food as a treat. When we switched over to fully tinned food (and not just any tinned food, I only bought the ones that were only meat, cats don't need veggies), he became more energetic and less grumpy. He died age 14, and a few years after that we switched our two remaining cats to raw food after a friend told me about a place that sells it pretty cheap. We're fortunate to have that place to buy it from. Our little calico died about 2 weeks ago, and for the last several years of her life she'd been eating raw food (with occasional roast chicken because our cats go nuts for it when we have it). She was just a couple weeks shy of her 20th birthday. Over the last couple years, she would periodically have episodes where she wouldn't eat for a while, would get constipated, just not herself, and each time we wondered "is this the end?" I'm 100% sure that if we hadn't been feeding her raw, she would not have lived as long as she did. She had a good, long, healthy life, and probably outlived all her littermates. Found her with her 3 siblings in a box outside our house one morning. Hubby found homes for the others with people at work, but she was the first one to stick her head up and look around, and from that moment she owned us.

I'm so glad to see more people doing this. I cook my dog food in a crock pot and add bones for the collagen and marrow. Then I add canned salmon (with skin and bones) or sardines. He gets tired of fish quickly but I found this way makes him happy to eat his Omegas.

I will keep this recipe base, for when we finally get a dog. For now I am trying to transition our cats. Our 2 boys like beef, pork, bacon, chicken, and 1 goes gaga over shrimp and salmon, the ither likes eggs. 3🙄🤔. My girl is fussy. But she seems to really love london broil, sliced thin, cooked medium well. 😂😂She ate 2 slices off my plate yesterday, which was a lot for her. Usually, she sniffs things with interest, then politely declines. I'm working on somethingvtheycwill like, eat and thrive off of. Kudos to y'all for doing this for your furbaby! I started making our dog food about 5 years ago when my 6 yr old Tobi was diagnosed with a heart problem. Luckily our vet knew about the new studies that showed grain free dog food was leading to a deficiency in taurine, which caused heart disease. Pea protein and sweet potatoes seemed to be the main culprits in the "healthy" grain free foods. It turns out that any type of potato's and any legume is bad. Green beans are a legume. I use pure pumpkin as an addition to protein. You can research taurine deficiency caused by grain free food and find the articles which were published in the Vet magazine. I just wanted y'all to be aware. Tobi is much improved, but the heart condition won't completely resolve. Again, kudos to y'all!

Dog kibble is the canine version of ultraprocessed breakfast cereal. Dont be lulled by 'grain free' labels because the manufacturers sub (cheap) legume meal which is no more appropriate

Suggestions...you can add ground pumpkin seed as a natural de-wormer. I wash the egg shells then grind up in my bullet for calcium. I add sardines and organ meat as well as muscle meat. I like the way you cook in a pot better than my using a skillet so I will switch.

I give my two lovable babies bones, pork necks, chicken wings, chicken paws, pork bones from chops, t bones…all the bones I can get my paws on! Hamburger…yes! Sardines…oh yeah. Eggs, bacon fat that I overcooked so won’t use…they go crazy for it! They are so healthy!! I love it. The only thing I do different is mostly raw food for my pups. We have an 11 y.o. GSD female. She came to us with a severe wheat allergy, that we weren’t told about. Trial and error - we make and can her dog food. It’s 80% beef and chicken with leftover fish that has accumulated in our freezer. 15% is green vegetables, maybe a few sweet potatoes, and the n the remaining 5 % is crushed eggshells and about a pound of oats per batch. Her diet is better than ours; if you put salt on it I swear you would think it’s for humans. We make enough for 90 days at a time, but her overall health is excellent and she’s at just the right weight with a glossy, shiny coat. We know Gracie is thankful for her food, she barks at it 6-8 times, and comes running to us for a bit of play after meals.

My dogs eat low carb home cooked, and to heat it up a little, I microwave a cup of filtered water and pour a little over their food to warm it slightly. It also makes sure they are getting some hydration because when they get off kibble dogs tend to drink less, I do have small yorkies, so it might not heat big dog serving amount of food, but it works great on small servings.

I love it! Ash, you are a natural in front of the camera! I did the same thing with our dogs once I started eating keto and carnivore myself, and realized what a difference our food makes to our well-being. I make a similar mix (a few differences), and they seem to do well on it. I never added rice, though in hindsight it does make a lot of sense during a transition period. I feed my golden retriever Teddy ORIJEN Regional Red, it’s a dry food made with raw beef, wild boar, bison, lamb and pork. Including organs and bone. Very low carb, grain and rice free. My dog lost 10lbs and is thriving. I also add the occasional sardines and eggs and his favourite sauerkraut.

For dogs previously fed kibble, your gradual change to homemade cooked food with rice then gradually decrease the rice is a perfect plan! I've been feeding my 2 dogs, a very high-end kibble as a free feed. But I give them what I eat, which is eggs and bacon for breakfast. And tonight gave them some cut up chicken and meat roll ups. I have seen many recipes for homemade dog food. And I even have a bunch of ingredients that Dr Judy uses for her dogs. She is a vet, and the ingredient list is pretty extensive. She actually put the food through a grinder and uses whole eggs, including the egg shells. But she adds things like dried muscles and sardines for the omega 3. And livers and gizzard. So I actually have most of that in my pantry or freezer. And I have seen others actually cook these combinations in a crock pot. Dr Judy partially cooks in the oven on a tray. My point is you have inspired me to do this because my older puppy, who is 4 1/2, has been losing fur despite being very cautious about Her flea and tick meds. I take iodine every day and that is a good point about doing that in the food. Although what doctor judy does is add enough seafood that she doesn't do that. But adding in the rice is a great idea, because I used to feed my dog's chicken and rice when they weren't feeling well. Thanks Ash and Chris for encouraging me!

😂I have cooked fresh food for my 6 dogs EVERYDAY twice a day for over 20 years!!!kibble is not fit for any living animal on planet earth!! They are carnivores just like us. CAUTION AMERICAN grown rice is full of arsenic!! I only buy Asian or Indian grown rice that I get from my Asian markets. And NEVER BROWN RICE. The outer hull is upsetting to their gut. Cranberries and blueberries in small amounts are good antioxidants to add. I grong the eggshell to a fine powder after they dry and I grind pressure cooked chicken bones to a fine meal all for the nutrients and nothing goes to waste. I never reheat their food. That kills nutrients. But I feed fresh everyday every meal.

I've had people fight me that kibble is good for animals when I said to feed dogs meat, fish, organs, eggs, and bones. People will fight for stupidity. Nutrients in kibble aren't bioavailable to them. My 6 dogs won't eat vegetables or rice, given the choice, so i don't bother with grains in their food. Bless you for loving your fur baby enough to feed her right. Mel is lucky. Uh oh, I just heard you say SHOTS. Please research that. I rescue all my animals (6 dogs, 7 cats, and a sulcata tortoise), and the ones I get from rescues who give vaxes, as opposed to those that don't have any, have health issues like cancer, and die sooner, ugh, than those who have never had vaxes. Our cats live into their 20's with zero vaccines, and never have health issues (yes, they go outside). Don't give raw egg whites as it causes avidin (Biotin deficiency), fyi❤❤❤❤❤❤

I’ve been making my dogs food for years. The vet recommended a website called InBalance where you figure out the amounts of foods and what foods you want to use and they recommend some supplements to add (if you wish). I add some Pluck Pure instead of the iodine (it has it in it) - it is pure organ meats that are dried and powdered. I do not add rice, occasionally I add a bit of carb to their meals but I use low fat beef, or turkey, or chicken breasts without skin and bones, some sweet potato or green beans or peas or apple with skin, and I mix it together in a food processor and then give them about 2 cups every night. They get occasionally other little things on top such as ground chicken livers (that I pre-cook once a week and refrigerate). They love the food, and beg for it every night. Some nights they give me trouble so I have to add a little bit of something else on top (some meat leftovers from our dinner without the fat) but otherwise they eat it, without any trouble. They were very picky from puppy (now one is 10 years old and the other is 8). They are not super-active. They are still a bit heavier than the doctor would like but one has leg problems and arthritis and the other is just getting old and acting it. Thanks for the recipe. Maybe I’ll try changing ours and see if they like it.

I know I've been nagging you guys (I'm from NJ) to get this video up - I have a picky eater Goldendoodle puppy and spent HOURS (and hours!) reading ingredient lists on dog food - decided to try "raw" - and found out through the man who wrote the book on dogs and raw food that when they tried to actually manufacture the food, it was too expensive to use much muscle meat - so most of the food is organs and such, which is too much for some dogs. Also, FYI, my vet said larger breeds actually need some grain in their diet (rice being a great one), as the studies are showing some heart issues (arrhythmia and such) with larger breeds only eating a "raw" diet. And beautiful job, Ash, you're giving Chris a run for his money!

Sure is. Liver is a super food. Just like us dogs would get their vitamins from meat and blood and bones in the wild. Liver does a great job for her. 😊

Thank you so much for this video. I started feeding my 2 dogs The Farmers Dog dog food a year and a half ago and they are doing great but it is very expensive and i think a homemade version would be even better for them. As im watching this video The Farmers Dog ad came on 😂. So this food will keep in the fridge for a week without spoiling? The Farmers Dog is only good for 4 days after defrosting. I just want to do whats best for my dogs ❤ Oh and i also do intermittent fasting with my dogs. They eat both their meals in a 6 hr window

We haven’t had issue with the food staying fresh. You could always portion and freeze if you want.

We do very similar to that. I like the rice and eggs and will add some. We cook it every day. Do you think its fresh enough once a week? Just worry about the food going bad after 4 or 5 days.

Canned food isn’t much better. Real food, just like us. There is a reason that dog food is so cheap. Deep pockets and caring about your dog is why there is “preferred “ food.

I feed meat but make my own “kibble” in the dehydrator to put in her rolly ball. I won’t feed any of that commercial garbage. P.S. I wouldn’t put that finished food into the plastic container unless it’s totally cool because of the plastic/chemicals leaching into the food.

So, as I've started trying to eat better meats myself, one thing I've noticed more than anything, is the quality of eggs. And I tried quite a bit of different ones so I've seen a good amount of yolks. What type of eggs do you use? Cause I've found that the pasture raised eggs, like vital farms, have such a more rich taste, and harder shell, and overall better quality to the store brand, as well as egglands best.

Have you ever tried feeding her raw? Before my cat passed away I fed him raw, at least until I moved in with my partner and didn't have enough freezer room. Then I started feeding a meat based, grain free kibble that had some freeze dried raw included. I'd still occasionally feed him raw chicken wings.

We don’t have dogs right now but thinking about getting guardian dogs when we build our chicken flock. Then we will consider raising rabbits for dog food to help with the costs. I’m not a big fan of rabbit but I’m sure the dogs won’t complain 😂😂

the only problem with rabbit is that it's got very little fat and dogs definitely need fat for energy and processing

@@Definitely_Elledogs don’t need much fat at all. In the wild they eat rabbit, pheasant, fish, etc. Very lean meats. I’ve been feeding my dog this way since Dec and any time I give her more fat, she gets diarrhea, so I stick w the leaner selections.
