The difference thermal paste can make is crazy sometimes. Bought a used RX 580 8GB RoG Strix (the one with the thicc cooler) for my own PC last saturday, at first it ran with 86° in Subnautica which really worried me, changed the thermal paste to MX-4 and the temps dropped by 30° to 55-65°.

Yea i've seen used gtx 1070 in the states for around $230 rx 580 8gb cards around $130. Thats a great budget card as its still less then a new gtx 1050 ti and it performs better then a gtx 1060 in most games. Also cant beat that 1070 price either thats anywhere from 40-50% off.

Great deal. For 'the average person' flashing a bios, stripping down a card and replacing the thermal paste is outside their comfort zone. The time it takes to do this process would be at least an hour? These considerations alone will keep these particular mining cards cheap- which is a good thing for enthusiasts who don't mind getting stuck in and 'getting their hands dirty'...

Hey Tech yes. Thanks for the tip. I went onto BaoTao after watching this video a couple of weeks ago, and set about trying to grab one. (a friend helped with translation and brought it from china for me - international shipping seems to be a trick) I ended up with a Saphire Nitro + RX480 for about $60 USD, but proper retail with 1 DVI, 2 x HDMI, and 2 x DisplayPort with proper BIOS (no flash needed). I took it apart and gave some TLC, some grease to the fan spindle, reassembly and it seems to be working well. Quiet performance as well.

If you have Windows 10 and an iGPU, you can use your dedicated GPU without having to plug your display directly into it. You can plug display into your iGPU and in Windows Graphics Options, you can select games and programs to use your dedicated GPU through your iGPU ports.

i think that only work on Laptop, because they have a special chip on the motherboard, a sort of "mux/multiplexer chip" to switch graphic output... so it's impossible in Desktop unless somebody made a hack for it.

Those RX470Ds on TaoBao are cut-core RX 470s with 1792 SPs instead of 2048, they're not the same as the Sapphire RX 470 Mining Edition that you have there. Buyer beware. The cards on TaoBao aren't a terrible deal, but they're not going to perform like a normal RX 470.

that sapphire mining card have two switches, for 3 BIOSes. eth mining, other coins mining, and as normal graphics. you dont have to flash anything. check sapphire mining card website to check the settings for the switches.

@@xdsingh7 i have no idea with asus cards, i only have sapphire mining cards. i checked asus mining-rx70-4g product page, there was no mention of switches. maybe its like the gigabyte mining cards where there's a bios version with tweaked memory settings and a normal bios that you can download and flash depending on what you want to do with the card.

He should've used isopropyl alcohol or some other specific solution for eletronic chips. WD-40 has mineral oil, which contribute to glue dust on the chip. It works but it's not really recommended

Can't believe the temperature dropped that much man.. my RX580 is very lightly used and before undervolting, temps were hitting the 80s quite frequently.. well now with undervolting, power limit up by 40% for clock stability and with a custom fan curve I get about 75°C max on temps

A friend of mine used this trick years ago (When ivy bridge and Kepler were new) to use more displays. Most of the times this works, but not always. Some games can refuse to launch. However what would work in this case is to use the GPUs DVI for your gaming monitor, and the IGP can then drive 1 or 2 other monitors for web browsing, editing, etc. VERY few people use their 3 monitor setups for surround gaming, let alone when using an RX 470 card.

True problem is gtx1060 mining without outputs, it can be used with gdc Beast on laptop then integrated gpu give picture on laptop screen( with 20% performance penality) with optimus driver on laptop...but dont know how it would work on desktop.

RX470D is different SKU, it is cut down version, something between 460 and 470. Also you can flash 570 bios likely on that for a few % more performance.

An asus rx 470 mining just like this one it only has dvi as display output and one thing that bugs me is that if you've flashed it from the original bios to the rx 470 gaming bios, Can you also flash it to rx 570 gaming bios? (from rx 470 base (mining) bios -> rx 470 gaming bios -> rx 570 gaming bios) is that possible? (edit: so I just searched google and unfortunately there's no gaming bios available for the asus rx 470 mining but the user on the site that i've looked up (techpowerup) said that the stock bios can play games well. Now the question is, Is there anyone who also have the same card and tried to flash it with another asus rx 470 bios?)

Wait, spraying the ABS plastic shroud and PCB with WD-40 is okay? I thought ABS should not be in touch with petroleum based oil. I used rubbing alcohol instead and let it dry for a day before using any ex mining cards. Works well and it keeps your plastic shroud from disintegrating.

Bought a 470 Nitro for 70€. I love this card. It is factory OC but i could easy push it to 1400 Mhz just by push Powertarget +50 and give the card a nice fancurve... never saw it throttle. Temps go up to 78C but today it’s the hottest day in Germany. About 40C outside.

I can open up my gpu cooler and replace the thermal paste but what about the thermal pads? If I take the cooler appart I'll have pull the cooler from the card and thus disconnect the vrm's from the thermal pads or the cooler from the thermal pads. Do I then need to replace the thermalpads as well?

It'll cost a little extra but if you're going to shop on taobao then I would recommend finding an agent, you just search on their site/give a link to what you want and they'll take care of everything else, even better is they sometimes offer slightly better shipping deals than if you were to buy directly and of course they're bilingual so if you have any issues or anything they can speak on your behalf.

Can you WD-40 a motherboard to clean it like you did the GPU ? Can't find any threads saying it's a good idea, Because of residue.

Just now i bought one online and notice that the gpu only have a single dvi port. Found out that it was a mining card. I'm glad i found this video and hoping to get it working fine.

Hey Brian, I got the same rx 470 sapphire mining card but it seems to be locked at 300mhz core clock. I tried flashing to other bioses (sapphire OC, OC+, and even sapphire rx 570 bios) but it still keeps locked. It certain it is not a temp issue since it stays below 60 degrees and I have just replaced the thermal compound.

I have some questions : _why don't you buy a HIS rx470? its cheaper and it has full video output. _and why does riva tuner show GPU usage 0% ? so does the temp even show correctly? _what's core clock to know if its mining bios or gaming bios? or is there any other way to know? thanks!
