Putting together my perfect bag helped me drop my handicap from 6 to 1 (in a year!), but I made a LOT of mistakes and learned a ton on the way. In this video I walk through my bag and why it works for me, plus some BIG lessons I learned (often the hard way).
I hope this is helpful. Please let me know with the like / subscribe / comment, and keep up the UPBEAT golf!

@@upbeatgolfer my 29 year old son just picked up the game about 6 months ago. He played standard irons for a couple months then bought a set of cobra one length and has shaved so many strokes off his game. He’s already shooting in mid 80s consistently (which seems nuts to me, took me at least a year or two). Kids these days have access to KZbin for free instruction. I’m self taught and learned from magazines and books lol. I couldn’t afford the 710 when they first came out, I think I was still playing mizuno mp14 at the time. Found these second hand in near mint condition for less than 300. Wasn’t even looking for irons but they’re so pretty I couldn’t pass.

Coming back to this video for this 2024 season. Definitely have a gap between my pw and my Vokey 50, have to bend it stronger to help the gap. I think the vokeys or wedge wedge spin more and go shorter than iron wedges.
@upbeatgolfer
@upbeatgolfer 4 ай бұрын
That is a GREAT point Mike - I hadn't thought of that. It definitely explains the gap between my PW and GW yardage better since my PW is part of my iron set. Thanks for mentioning that - I'm going to keep that in mind from now on! In case it helps: the other thing I found is that I was casting my 50deg a bit (because of the headweight maybe), so I worked on shorter backswings and more "driving through" the ball, and my yardage has gone up from 105 to ~112 in the last few months.

Dude! Great video. I’m a 20ish HCP and couldn’t agree more with lessons learned. I’m addicted to buying clubs. This hurt my score many times. Also a firm believer of playing what looks good and inspires confidence. I’m gaming an old Cleveland classic driver and ping anser irons even I have new and more forgiving clubs, just because I love their look. Keep telling myself to keep this setup for the season. But clubs built to look vintage have a special place in heart. Probably why I have Ben Hogan edge and Wilson powerdyn on my eBay quick search. 😂Cheers!

Nice! 100% agree, the old designs were so beautiful. Can you do both? Maybe play the vintage when you feel nostalgic and the newer ones when you want to work on the game or if the round matters? The older clubs probably help groove your sweet spot striking too, which will help with your more forgiving clubs.

That's great - welcome to the most obsessive game ever :) I agree with you that you would be better off getting your swing to a more consistent motion before you think about clubfitting. 100% best advice is not to go to a place with a discount if you purchase. I've had 2 fittings so far. My fitting with guys that didn't credit the fitting was so much more helpful and in tune with what I wanted. My fitting with club champion was a terrible sales experience with them trying to upsell aftermarket shafts without trying stock shafts. Night and day difference between the two fittings.

Yeah it's such a weird model when there's clearly a conflict of interest. I wonder why they keep doing it. I had something similar happen when I went to GolfTec years ago for a video swing assessment - the guy filmed several swings and then picked the one really bad warmup swing I made and then proceeded to tell me how bad it was for the next 20 min. And then recommended $3K in lessons. 🤦‍♂️

However with my 7W/9W/6H/7H (21*/25*/30*/34*) I don’t mind getting on the gas a little bit because of the forgiveness in the heads. This shaft allows me to get after it a little more if I need to and allows me to control the flight more since a lot of times those clubs tend to balloon up.

Thanks dude! Sure, here are all the specs: - Irons: I play my irons 1deg flat (that was the best contact I got when I got fitted), but at standard lengths and lofts (the P7MC are a bit weaker than most irons today so I had to get over the "he's hitting a 6 iron while I'm hitting a 4" insecurities :D ). My previous set had slightly stronger lofts and was 0.75" longer than standard (more ego decisions) so I made a spreadsheet that helped me figure out my new yardages based on the math of shorter and weaker clubs. (I didn't have access to a trackman with nice golf balls so the spreadsheet was the next best answer - it worked remarkably well actually...who knew math was so good?!) - Woods: I upgraded my driver since that video -- now I play the Callaway Rogue ST triple diamond LS at 9deg, but I adjusted it up to 10deg. I did that because for some reason the new driver launches way lower than my Mavrik, and also because I found my numbers were as good but I got higher ball flight with the higher loft (I tested this out at my fitter). I also switched from my awesome Graphite Design shaft to a Ventus Blue 6X at 44.75" (the OG one, not the TR) because I saw a lot of great golfers using it at the tournaments I played, and when I tried it out it felt much more stable and controllable in my hands. And it's been great, my "smart yardage" on Arccos was 300 this summer. Interestingly it's dropped to ~285-290 recently, and that coincided with a handicap drop from 3.2 to +0.3 over the past 2 months. Go figure! My 3W is standard everything. Might upgrade that at some point soon to get more forgiveness. Oh wait BF is coming up...yikes. (Seriously I had not thought of this until literally 60 seconds ago and now I NEED a new 3W. Thank you for the reminder!) Hope this answers your question. What are you thinking of with your clubs?

Love the detailed response - thanks! I'm playing a lot of Cobra clubs (Radspeed Driver, King Tec Hybrid, and MIM Tour Irons + Wedges) and have almost everything at standard at the moment. Just got down to single digit handicap, so feel like I should go get fit sometime.
@upbeatgolfer
@upbeatgolfer 8 ай бұрын
Nice! Cobra makes some great stuff, I drooled over those Rickie irons (still do actually, I saw a guy using them last week). I'm excited to hear what you get fit into! But also if you just want to check if you need a slightly different lie angle, you can probably do it for free at your local golf shop vs. getting a full fitting. As far as fitting goes, if there's one thing I can suggest: check out your options before you just order the clubs from the fitter. E.g. I got fitted into some different stock shafts for my irons, but the fitters wanted to charge an extra $100 per shaft for installing and "puring" them. Instead I ordered them direct from Taylormade and just got the shafts installed as stock, and it was $800 cheaper (and they work great). Ok ok one more suggestion if you don't mind - if you haven't done it already, maybe check your driver length? Personally I think the first thing I think everyone should do is shorten their driver. I recently went from a 45" Graphite Design (0.75" shorter than stock) to a 44.5" Ventus, and my distance went UP. Even my mishits are way better. And also thank you for asking about my clubs. I did end up getting a new 3W over BF (the Callaway Rogue ST LS). It's the same weight as my existing Mavrik so I *should* be able to slot in the same shaft. Thank you for enabling me 😃

Great video man. Did you mess around with different types of wedge shafts? I personally have the same shafts in my wedges and irons but I question that because how often are you doing full swings with wedges?
@upbeatgolfer
@upbeatgolfer Жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! I didn't mess with a ton of shafts but I HAVE tried many wedges (Titleist, Callaway, Cleveland, Taylormade) in the past so I know what the different wedge flex shafts feel like. For my current setup I found the same shaft as my irons felt the best by far -- somehow it actually made the clubhead feel softer with the way the shaft releases. No kidding, I was going to return the MG3 for a while because every shot felt like hitting a brick! Before getting the shaft, I also thought a lot about your point about "how often are you hitting a full shot with a wedge". And I realized I also don't hit full shots all the time with my irons either because I rarely get a stock yardage + all the low, high, punches etc. -- so I figured I'd stick with my iron shaft to have the same feel across my set, which has worked. And fortunately it's been SO MUCH better than anything I had in the past - so much so that, when I needed a new LW and the Nippon shaft wasn't available, I swapped out the new shaft with the Nippon from my previous wedge (MG2). I'm sure it depends on personal feel, but for me this was a very noticeable thing.

As a high handicapper you could look into both clinics (there are some at Presidio and Moffett Field, to name a couple), as well as getting private lessons. The clinics are a great option because you can learn from other folks' tips too, and they're often longer and less expensive. @@upbeatgolfer I'm at 35 hc (The Grint app est.) with 1 year into this addictive hobby. Favorite course thus far has been Monarch Bay because I can play the same golf ball without losing it. Shots inside 100 yds, 3-putts & Par-3 are my nemesis. Also, what are your favorite driving ranges within the Bay Area that offer good chipping and putting greens?
@upbeatgolfer
@upbeatgolfer Жыл бұрын
Ha yes I love that's why you like Monarch Bay :D The great thing about 3 putts and par 3s being your nemesis is that those are fairly easy to improve! (Shots inside 100y are slightly harder ;) One major thing I didn't know about par 3s until recently is how badly Pros play them. The stats here are insane (mygolfspy.com/pros-vs-joes-par-3-scoring-average/). Even the Pros play most par 3s in over par. So my strategy is basically to hit the center of the green on every one, and just make par :) Re: ranges - both Mariner's Point and San Bruno Golf Center are good options with short game practice areas that you can pay to use. I've also noticed most local public courses have reasonable short game areas that are free (and you can take your own, non-range, balls along).

Any tips on increasing swing speed for beginners?
@upbeatgolfer
@upbeatgolfer Жыл бұрын
Great question! You've probably looked into this already, so here are three suggestions that you may not have gotten yet: 1. Get comfortable with, and increase your proprioception of, a club in your hands. When we first start playing, it's weird holding a club and having this heavy weight almost 3 feet away from the handle. As you get better, that feeling and the awareness of the clubhead/clubface becomes second nature, and then you can move your muscles more in sync to create higher swing speed. To do this, I think the best answer is just to hold a club for a while when you're at home - I used to just hold a club/play with it while watching TV (this also helps groove a grip change). 2. Get your backswing right. To have a good, powerful downswing, you need to set up properly for it. In my opinion, this is the #1 thing that beginners (myself included) ignore, but if you look at the pros, they're constantly checking their basics (grip, stance, alignment, backswing - I have a video for this in the works). If you imagine throwing a ball a long way, it's really hard to do if you wind up incorrectly. To this, the top three things for me are: good square takeaway, full shoulder turn, and weight shift to the right side. 3. Remember that swing speed is how fast the clubhead is moving at impact, not how hard you swing with your arms. Our brains tend to believe that more effort equals more results, but that's not the case in golf (again, took me 20+ years to learn this!). So hard swings rarely lead to faster swing speeds. So when you're practicing, if you can get a swing speed tracker (like a portable launch monitor or PRGR) you can experiment with different types of swings to see what actually creates the fastest swing speed for you -- I bet it won't be your hardest swing! A swing thought I like to remind myself of at the range is "sling the clubhead", instead of swinging hard. Do these help?

Hey! I have a Vessel VLX 2.0 for my carry bag, and for the moment I use a Titleist Heathered Storm Players 4 stand bag (which I do NOT recommend! Looks dope but so many issues) for my electric cart.

Great catch! I made that one myself - I wanted one with an NZ flag and couldn't find one online that I liked. so I used the base measurements from a Reddit post (t.ly/VzPB) and then improvised a bit myself (put a towel liner in there, added a colored backing, waterproofed it a bit). Ended up stitching it by hand which was remarkably therapeutic while watching golf on the weekends 😀

Finding a fitter that actually cares about ur golf game and not the profit aspect is extremely hard to find. Also indoor fittings is great but nothing beats real turf interaction so you don't have any surprises.

100% on the fitter that cares -- the closest proxy I've found is fitters who charge separately for the fitting so there's at least not that conflict of interest. And totally agreed on the real turf interaction, unfortunately that wasn't an option in my area but fortunately my fitter was super chill so I got to try out a bunch of shots and used my preferred ball model etc. I think not being rushed is another core consideration so you're confident about what you landed on. Where did you get fitted outdoors?

@@upbeatgolfer By buying bunch 2nd hand and trying them out on the course. I'm still testing couple hybrids vs 3 iron. 7 wood got the boot since it just flew too high and seeing so much of the face just didn't sit right with me.

Wow - that is some dedication! Yeah I agree with you on the 7H. Which hybrids are you landing on? I found they all flew too high except for the Callaway Apex (which makes sense, most are made for folks to hit higher than irons).

@@upbeatgolfer I have an old Adams that flies a little too low. Currently I'm testing Callaway rogue st pro with an ad di 8s. If that fails I'll probably try an Apex UW. I've tried the ping g425 hybrid and didn't like it. Hard to figure out the last piece of the puzzle

Interesting. I'd love to hear what you land on, and which one you find most maneuverable.
