Pimax in general was a company with so much potential. But over the years have proven to highly overpromise and underdeliver with every single product they have made up to this point.

I understand why you waited beyond the difficulty of dealing with Pimax support to replace a broken HMD. The product isn’t ready yet. Too many features are ‘not available yet.’ Consumer beware: NEVER buy something based on future improvements. All to often they don’t happen. When all the features are actually available, then buy what you can actually own. Pimax would never go for a customer asking, “Send me what you have now, and I’ll pay you for it later.” Why do they expect customers to pay now for something available later. Pimax’s history of support issues and not delivering features as advertised results in it is a company I would never send money to. Thank you for the great review of the product.

Ya, I agree with all that mate. The Crystal is still on my radar but until it’s fully functional there is no way I’ll commit to buying one. TBH I don’t think it’s worth wasting my time watching any more Crystal reviews until this happens. You need to question KZbinr recommendations to buy if you’re a sim user. Especially ones with affiliate links, lol!

Just the fact they ship a product with 1 key advertised feature standalone not working shows the type of company they are not to mention all the quality control issues or in general bad product that tries to do too much. IMO if they wanted some success they shoulda removed all the weight/cost from standalone mode integration battery apu etc and also came standard with steamvr tracking. This headset primarily simmers will use so should be made for that target audience.

Enabling features via software updates is a standard practice with many products. As you say we sell to many simmers, and for those customers the standalone mode is a lower priority feature. It will be rolling out shortly though. The headset utilizes inside out tracking as standard in response to our own consumer demand. Far more of our customers want to eliminate base stations than keep them.

@@Eskoxo I can't say I know what you mean. We announced from the very first day that standalone would NEVER be ready for launch. We were very clear about it. I did the announcement myself. We said specifically that standalone would not be available when we started shipping the headset. At no point was the feature ever advertised to be available at launch, in fact we made every effort to be clear that the feature would not be available at launch.

I had a Crystal for a very short period of time and experienced everything you mentioned in your review. I chose to sell it and not wait for all the things to be fixed or finished. I'm tired of spending money on products that are released in Beta 1/2 baked stages. But that's how Pimax operates and so we were warned about this with previous headsets.

Did you check to make sure you have the glass lenses and not the plastic ones? When I first got my Crystal I was about to return it because of the distortion but then got the glass lenses and it's totally solved, it has some of the least distortion I've seen in a VR headset. Also, the Chromatic aberration of the plastic lenses was everywhere as you described but the glass ones it's only on the edges, there's none in the center 50% of the screen where you're normally looking.

I've been watching Pimax since the kickstarter but after all these years I'm convinced I will never own a Pimax. I really thought the Crystal would be the first 'finished' headset but you proved they really haven't changed. I wish they'd just focus on one product and perfect it before dumping it and moving to the next unfinished headset.

I have owned 7 headsets and of those 7 4 have been PIMAX which I have loved all 4. There will never be a headset that does it all and it seems where the Crystal has had minor things has been the result of trying to make a one for all headset which will never happen

Great video. I've got one coming soon. Pimax can be so frustrating. They still make the same mistakes they've been making for years. I love their commitment to wide fov but hate when they constantly lie about when a product will release/be delivered to customers.

They don't lie. The engineers say a time (theft say a best possible case) and then Kevin and others repeat that time. They need to stop doing that. Just say it will ship when ready.

Great vid! My headset recharges the battery overnight. I guess because I'm using the USB splitter box? Also I have 0 barrel distortion on mine. I do have very light ghosting on high contrast scenes and CA (not noticeable unless you are looking for it).

Hi. If you were suffering from substantial chromatic abberation the most likely reason is that the headset is not adjusted properly on the vertical axis. The lenses are either too high, or too low compared to your pupils.

@joos3D I suppose thats possible. There are scaling settings in our software which can be adjusted as well, and in steam VR I believe there are world scale overrides. There are quite a few reasons why that could happen and most of them are settings related.

Just got mine today. You really have to learn how to use it. I hated it at first, so much so, I was going to put it up for sale only after a few minutes of use, but after taking a break then coming back and playing with the straps and such, I am starting to come around. To your point though, they have been doing this long enough it should be like using a quest. Plug it in and go. You really have to spend hours getting it so it works for you. I had 0 issues with SW for those that care about that. Its all fitment and settings. I am only a few hours in now but it reminds of the G2. Hated it at first and now cant live without the G2. I will say this. If you wear glasses, like I do, contacts or VR Rock lenses are a must. it's a bit uncomfortable with glasses on and I cant tell you how many times my glasses have hit the lenses already. Your right this is a half-baked for sure. I hope they finish all the features, or this will be the most expensive beta test I have ever bought.

I'm coming from a G2 and now have been using the Crystal for about a month. I use it exclusively for DCS. You're spot on about a lot of things, like the god-awful clips on the battery compartment but miss a few key points. 1. With the headset plugged into the supplied USB hub you should be getting at least 6 hours of battery life between swaps. If you also plug in the usb-c connector on the side it will charge enough that you will never have to switch batteries. 2. Most if not all of these issues can and will be fixed by software updates. Fortunately none of these issues seem to be hardware related. 3. It needs to be run in OpenXR with "PimaxXR". SteamVR doesn't work well with this device yet.

Dear Tyrielwood Luke ross VR modded games (Cyberpunk , Zero Horizon Dawn ect) is working with Pimax Crystal? Can you use open xr layer or just steam VR? And can you play with 4090 with affordable fps? Furthermore can you play also praydog Resident Evil VR mod and the crystal controllers are working ? Because my G2 working very well with these modded games in open xr mode and i can achive affordable fps with my rtx 4080 and it will be very important question because i would like to upgrade my G2 if these are workign with also Pimax Crystal.

Sounds like you might need an external IF-light to illuminate the room for better tracking..and... darken the room more. I'm thinking they made different circuits, to get the balance to go towards the back of the headset, instead of putting everything on the front.. hence the connectors all over, just not where it matters ;)... oh well. As far as I'm concerned, I'm sold on the vision for the crystal. A possible standalone headset with their upcoming wigig module, with the highest resolution on the market, with auto-ipd, eye tracking, and decent FOV... alongside, modular parts which can easily be replaced and swap out.

Good one ! I have one, the HMD battery is charging if used with he inculded usb hub, so, without spending half of the day in VR it seems doesnt have to swap battery since it will charge while not using it. But the weight!... Also had to add foam on the side because of the titan xl face gasket to feel more comfortable. But still heavy with incredibles visual, even with that almost standart FoV. I've been saying for year to trade off a few FoV for some angular resolutions with the Pimax, since most ppl use them in Normal FoV, changing the lenses to gain PPD would have be possible for every actual Pimax owners.

It appears many of the issues can be resolved from what I’ve watched on yt. This is the first I’ve heard of someone getting sick using the crystal, that’s a bummer. It’s not ready for prime time, but at least there are DIY fixes out there for some of them. Ive got one on order and hope I’m not gambling $1600.

It's the same weight as my Quest with the counterweight. My kids can handle it. I do about 3 hours of Skyrim a night and never felt any neck fatigue.

I domt notice chromatic aberration/distortions at all while I'm playing, for me its negligible. Better stability at 120 fps is needed, other than that it's a great headset. Never need to swap the battery, it charges while it's connected, and you don't have to connected it with type c to update it, that's old ui probably, i did updated it many times. Comfortability can be improved though, other than that, really impressive headset. With 3090, i'm playing deep rock galactic daily with vr mode, aim is good enough, sure could be better, but unnoticeable in this game. I also finished resident evil 8 vr mod, fully with this hmd, ridiculously amazing expirience, perfect performance. One annoying issue i had, is that the hmd didn't worked while 2 monitors rather than 1 were connected. I

Pimax customer support is shockingly bad. Their warranty is worthless! I got an 8Kx which was faulty within 6 weeks. Pimax have had this now for 6 months and all I want is either a replacement or refund. Their responce, $350 off my next purchase. You what!? What about the 12 month warranty!? Nope. $350 off after a failure of their headset after 6 weeks! AVOID PIMAX!

Im a pimax fan. Owned almost all the headsets cos im into racing. 1 rule i always go by. Never buy into pimax as a tester lol. Always buy second hand lol. My 8kx cost £500. They always have issues and most is software related. Lots did and mine works fine. Cos by time i got one, the beta testers had gone through issues. My next headset will be the big screen and beyond. Some time next year when theyre around £1k from ebay uk. Ill get one. For what i play, 8kx is still doing a good job.

I fixed the lens distortion problem by asking them to send a new lens which I have to be honest, they kindly provided even though I had scratched mine while trying to fix it... Still it's not good a good practice to sell a headset for €1800 and have these kind of QC problems. I hope they can get their priorities straight because the headset now looks amazing. Now waiting for a final fix for the controllers, foveated rendering and auto adjust for ipd... the rest is extra imo.

aspherical lenses on both Aero and Crystal.. The small sweet spot on the Bigscreen has been talked about just in recent Virtual Reality Oasis review kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIK5Z6R-a7lli8k . Bigscreen wont get near to the visual quality of a Aero or Crystal. So there is lots of compromises when picking a HMD. So depending how you play VR one will be your go to and the others may not work out for you.

11:45 The PCVR connection does charge the headset at the same time as long as you have it connected to USB. If you plug into a powered USB hub you can get 8+ hours of play per battery and if you add a second usb wire to the right usb-c connection you get indefinite play.

you get the 8 hours if you do that and plug in a second usb cable on a power brick into the extra usb c port on the side, the pcvr cable usb only on a power brick will give you anywhere between 4 to 6 hours, just a shame... 1.5k USD headset and can't even build in a proper power supply system using 12v protocol like PD used by every phone, tablet, or laptop nowadays.... even the 300 USD Quest 2 has PD for fast charging.... shame on pimax

I understand what you mean with "it is a Pimax", but I'm not going to talk about it, as it's Machine Spirit may be listening, and I have it running very well at present, but I needed to update my gaming PC with a RTX4080 GPU and ADM Ryzen 9 7900X CPU to be able to run it properly, 2 year after I brought it.

The Crystal uses Aspherical lenses. You keep mentioning pancake lenses. But maybe I misunderstood what you were referring to.

8:22 alright so that's a deal breaker. Ive definitely got good VR legs, but I can get sick sometimes. I dont want a headset that will make that sometimes into *almost all the time.* Also price obviously is an issue. I hate going with the quest 3 because, well, I just dont like being stuck in a singular eco system, but I am, so I may as well go for a headset that's cheaper and probably better quality. I'd consider this headset if 1 I had the money and 2 it was a huge improvement to the quest 3, but neither seem to be the case here. Maybe next year ill finally break out of the quest ecosystem when pimax comes out with the crystal 2 or whatever that has quest pro tracked controllers, and significantly better resolution than the quest 4 or whatever.

I said that it would be nice if they made a version of it for only Steam VR so they could make it cheaper for us that dont want stand alone. Try and read comments before responding. @elite-forcecinema3671 I think it's sarcasm from you but I will mention that Pimaxx putting standalone into a headset that requires 8k render resolution to get full image clarity is really a bad move. The snapdragon they put is unable to handle Quest 2 render resolution of 5400x2700 so it needs to render in way lower one. Many issues could be resolved by Pimax just releasing this headset as PCVR only. Cost goes down. Less issues with tracking etc.

Considering the large number of features. And the fact that this is their first attempt to make a stand alone headset. I think they bit off more than they could chew, and encountered too many problems in the development due to the complexity of the headset, causing too much dev time to be wasted. I think they just ran out of time and possibly even money. But they needed to ship something out, otherwise all of the already expended effort and resources would be wasted. And I don't think they're a big enough company yet to take a hit to the company coffers. I suspect the operating system for the Crystal gave them more trouble than they expected, and wouldn't be ready in time. I got a peek at the kind of effort needed for integrate Android into a VR headset from what Lynx Mixed Reality said about their own process on their channel. It's not a simple thing to do. The software needs to be able to use the hardware properly. Designs need to be made. New code needs to be written. Things need calibrating. Optimizations need to be done.

Kind of my expierience when I was asked to do a review of the Pimax 8K X, was pretty unusable for me. Really sad because the raw specs always sound like a dream. I've never done the review because I couldnt get used to the headset and didn't want to make one which is super brief and bad. Aren't the dts headphones the same as on the 8k? Because the sound from them was awful crackling und unsusable, much much worse than the index sound.

You will be hard pressed to see a difference in clarity, in colors and contrast the Crystal wins hands down as the crystal has local dimming. So if you want to compare in clarity its almost a draw. If you want comfort and better HMD build quality the Aero wins, and its been out longer so less software issues. I have both a Aero and Crystal and its hard to go back to the Aero because the colors are just not as good, but I like the build quality and form factor better on the Aero.

Well, we have two different sides: - big headset like Pimax, so big on your head... - very small headset like Bigscreen, so it wont look big and bulky, but small and light. It's still bit weird to have such big front today. And in middle like Pico4 / Quest 3 so it's not too big but just good for most uses. Because i do also signing, so i will not get big Pimax headset, or controllers will hit often the headset. So even it has nice FOV, but i still enjoy good FOV from Pico4, i will not get this Pimax. I am also not favorite of battery system, because it's small and also put inside headstrap. Makes solutions for 3rd party limited and feels bit less future proof. Weight? 1,12 KG? Wow, that is almost neck killer versus other headsets that weight around 500 grams.

This is probably going to be the last of vr headset from this company, as everyone else moving into small form factor MR headsets this is like the last of the dinosaur on earth. It would probably be silly to buy this thing right now not waiting for just a little longer. I had multiple pimax headsets and to be honest the products weren’t polished and they have already moved on to other projects that is also not polished, and for yrs to come it may never reach a polished state. Not to mention the pimax service they consistently ignore customers left with faulty/design flawed product in the cold. It may have nice screens but everything else are compromises.

For a through the lens comparison, I'd go 4 ways. 1) Reverb G2 (oldest HMD of the bunch also the least expensive) 2) Varjo Aero (closest competitor and high price range) 3) Bigscreen Beyond (new tech in a super small form factor, if you already have base stations and controllers, then cheaper than Aero and Crystal, also only HMD in the bunch with Micro OLED panels, great for comparison against the LCD panels of the others) 4) Pimax Crystal. Notice all these HMDs are Display Port connected, crappy streaming compression stand alone HMDs need not apply. LOL

The fact that everything feels "small" in room scale areas is a fault of every single Pimax headset ever made. They have never focused on making their displays accurate to how we perceive stereoscopic vision in real life. (This is what gives us "depth" in the real world and makes things feel far away or close.) This is a physical issue, not a software one. They will never be able to just "patch" it. This is one of the main reasons I will never purchase a Pimax headset. It's disgusting the amount of oversights they make on their products, physical or software wise.

Wow ! $1500 for an unfinished product where right now the visuals are far from perfect , large and clunky , battery issues , no foveated rendering right now , then you need a very powerful pc to even get this quality and to top it all off the fov isn’t as large as the other pimax headsets which is obviously the major selling point of the pimax in the first place and a promise that it will all improve in the future from a company with poor customer support who has just released an inferior product without fully developing it beforehand - not for me lol 😂
