I think Omni-man started off as a heartless, ruthless conqueror when he first came to Earth undercover. He never lost the ruthless part, but in the midst of those 17 years he unwittingly gained a heart, kind of like the tin man of Oz. And Nolan just didn’t realize how much he had changed until it was too late

I think one of the amazing things about this fight is they hint what's going on in Nolan's head throughout. Like every time Mark pleads with his father or Nolan is about to do something horrible, he's actively working himself up into a rage. It starts off small, like an impassive or sad look here or there before he grits his teeth and does what he thinks what should be done until at the end where he's trying his best to get riled up enough to finish the job and he just can't and breaks down in tears. Makes it kind of clear when you examine it that he's trying to convince himself as much as he's trying to convince Mark but I doubt he himself even realizes the extent of the conflict going on inside himself. Or that every opinion he said in the episode is a lie even if he doesn't realize it. One of those things where surface level Nolan just seems like a typical bad guy but he's going through an extreme emotion reaction and he's responding to it in an admittedly extremely negative way. I mean misdirecting anger onto others is fine when everyone is the same relative strength as you but if your Superman, that's a problem. Another character that can do with some therapy I guess.

So Omni Mans's true motives for exterminating the Guardians of the Globe stem from his identity as a Viltrumite, a powered alien race that considers themselves superior to other species. His mission on Earth was to prepare it for conquest by eliminating any potential threats, to their dominance. That's sound about right

I mean no doubt Nolan's actions were horrible and he can never truly be redeemed. But think about it, all viltrumites are indoctrinated at birth and raised to be ruthless killers and conquerers. But Nolan choice to beat the living shit out of his son to convince him and himself that what viltrum was doing was for the best, and he realizes that humanity has made him feel emotion, real emotion. He's one of the nicest of his kind considering he didn't just tear his son's head off and forcefully control the planet, I'm not defending his actions, but just remember it's not so black and white

I never understood this argument. Even in real life. Theres no good and bad. People can do evil and then realize what they did was wrong they arent instantly a pixar super villian rubbing their hands for their evil plan. We arent supposed to love omni man after he felt sadness, but we still understand him a bit because he showed humanity.
