I remember the Shrek DVD having a section that was like 'hints for the Xbox Game' and iirc, the hints had zero to do with the game itself (no button directions, just random questions with pictures) I _think_ i recall a youtuber talking about that and finding out something like, the game was changed during production? something where the hints were meant for the game originally, but ended up being useless.

With lots of older games the speed is tied to frame rate, so there's a good chance it's meant to be played at 30 fps and you're doubling shrek's immeasurable power at 60 fps. I highly recommend setting the videos playback speed at 50%, it makes everything about the game look and sound almost normal, but turns Kevin into a blathering drunk. Additional bonus, the video will last almost an hour and a half!

Does it run this strangely on console? I was wondering if Kevin was having emulation issues or if it runs this odd natively
@robonator294510 ай бұрын
@@christopherbucher7017 As a heads up, this ended up with about 8 different tangents in it so if you're not interested, the answer I've heard and seems most likely is that they locked the game-speed to the frame rate and he's playing it faster than the original console. Back to our regularly scheduled programming: I could be wrong but I remember reading a comment where someone theorized that on original hardware it was frame locked to 30fps, but kevin is playing at 60fps. While most modern PC and console games handle varying frame timings fine, a lot of older games aren't quite as graceful about it since the load on the system was generally a lot more consistent, not to mention well-optimized. When you have so little performance to work with even a lazy developer can't keep their job without putting in the work to optimize their games and get used to making optimizations even while phoning it in. You'd be shocked just how much compute is wasted with modern websites, apps, games, etc. There is a video by Molly Rocket called Clean Code, Horrible Performance where he basically shows that by following the 'best practices' of modern programming you can be losing *_decades_* worth of hardware development. That's likely not a perfectly representative case, but yeah, as a rule of thumb it's kind of insane how un-optimized modern things are. (*most modern things, a lot of open source software is actually remarkably lean. Not at theoretical maximum, but still really bloody good. The same hardware that idles on cold-boot at 5-10% CPU on windows can idle below 1% CPU with applications open on Linux. In fact, even with ~200 tabs, discord, steam, a few file manager windows, etc. I'm *_currently_* at 1%, and I ain't exactly running suckless) If it was locked at 30fps then they programmed the game to work at 30fps and may not have (likely didn't) add delta-time logic. In other words, they programmed Shrek to move 1/6 feet per frame instead of 5 feet per second, at 30fps that math works out, at 60 Shrek is explaining that in order to understand what he's about to tell you, you need to believe in the impossible. This is also likely why the jumps and other controls were so wonky as well, since everything from gravity to inital jump acceleration, turning speed, etc. would *_all_* likely be sped up. (For a bit more of a delve into delta-time MattKC has a video fixing a similar turn-speed bug in Lego Island where basically the same thing is happening.)
@christopherbucher701710 ай бұрын
@@robonator2945 that makes sense! Thanks for the information. I think he had a similar issue with the PC version of Spider-Man 2000. The movement was tied to frame rate there as well and resulted in a lot of scripted actions breaking.
@PointsofData10 ай бұрын
@christopherbucher7017 In the same thread the other guy saw the FPS comment people who played it on console said it was legitimately this chaotic. One guy said it was slower but IDK I'm gonna go with the majority personally. Other people also mentioned that if it was tied to framerate then other stuff would likely be messed up as well, not _only_ Shrek's movement, but the rest of the game seems to be running at the correct speed. The walkthrough also talks about how hard it is, especially to jump. I would presume this is a simple case of no playtesting.

I think he's sussed it out so that he has basically an assembly line. This is how I'd think it would go. Person 1 chooses the game and locates a working version of it, then Kevin plays the game and records his audio and/or visuals, then he sends that off to one of 4-5 editors who make about 1 video each a week, just over. Then they get reviewed and posted. This means Kevin probably doesn't make as much as he would be if he did it himself, but he's got himself set up where he can chill and basically just play 3-4H of videogames a day and just makes heaps off of it. He's got quite a few midrolls (mid vid adds) and KZbinrs also make $$ from watchtime so the 1h videos are making him way more than 6 10min videos. So I think he's done it really nicely where he just basically makes $$ off his personality and doesn't have to do much (though it would be quite exhausting still) which is great.

It's the side of KZbin people don't see, they see kids recording a 20minute video and making a bunch of money for it and think that all they do is record the video, but they don't think about scripting, pacing, lighting, directing, and then editing. Then God forbid you miss something and your video gets demonetized or claimed. That's like a week of solid work down the toilet, unless you can fix it. And then you've got the anxiety of basically not knowing what your next paycheck is gonna be, then the pressure of having a massive fan base who looks at you as something higher than a normal human. This is absolutely amazing. This was the first game I ever played on my gamecube when I was like 6 years old. I still come back to this game from time to time just to be stupid (especially in Mother Goose Land) However it is different than this version: real story progression, less glitchy, better graphics, more levels etc. This feels like a beta version of the gamecube version honestly and it's hard to picture this as being a real released game in comparison to the one I grew up with. Seeing Kevin getting stuck in some of the same places I did as a kid just made my day. In the Crown Prince's Castle you can get yourself out the window where you free the prisoners by bouncing off the walls. In the GC version it dropped you in a secret room where you were inside of your console. I'd love to know if that's possible in the xbox version. I would highly recommend going through this game again on the game cube if you can for a far better experience. I have completed that version several times with twice the content. Finding all hidden eggs and fairies is tricky but not impossible. It pains me though that you also did not get stuck looking for the fire pit in the tutorial. MEET ME IN THE FIRE PIT is something my family still shouts to each other 20 years later.

Ah yes, a glorious 42 minutes of Kevin playing a game that also ruined my childhood sanity. Fantastic, thanks, Kevin!

I now know why the entire town would gather to witness a tar and feathering in the middle age, this is incredibly entertaining

Ok so I know no one probably knows what I’m talking about but I would kill to watch Kevin play Buffy the vampire slayer chaos bleeds, it is actually hell and it took me watching several walk throughs and looking up so many guides, the enemies are so brutal and non stop, I just think it would be a fun video to watch even if you know what buffy the vampire slayer is or not

I know the Bee Movie game is a thing but after watching Kevin's Media Streams with Dr Bees makes an appearance every so often. They really gotta do a Bee Movie 2 with Dr Bees as the main protagonist. 🤣🤣🤣

Kevin is actually able to pull out people's inner strengths and abilities. Because I'm feeling like I re-discovered my empathy. Because I'm beginning to feel depressed watching Kevin have to play this game... jesus christ... poor kevin :(

Just wanted to say thank you for your videos. My bunny passed away almost three months ago, and I’m still terribly grieving. But your videos were the first thing to make me laugh and try to be happy again, even for a little while. I really appreciate everything you do. 💖
