Yep, will never waste money on Gary Yamamoto and similar overpriced senkos again. It's all about the correct color and size. Never caught more on a Yamamoto than a Dinger or other cheaper options. The bait movement and action on different brands will not be that drastic on such a simple style bait and technique.

@@fishfood8719 i agree on the size of the lure but most of the time i don't think color matters too much. I bet he would've caught the same fish if it was a green pumpkin dinger.

Had similar issues missing hooksets using the Gamakatsu weedless hook and a medium action spinning rod. Once I went up to a medium heavy spinning rod my hookset percentage dramatically increased. No issues using the same hook on my medium action bait caster.

I agree with you on some of the weedless hooks. The ones like you are using where the weedless thing “snaps” in to the hook I have a difficult time hooking them. The ones with the two wires that just hang off and don’t hook into anything seem to work better for me. I especially like the weighted wacky hooks, I think 1/16th oz, with the weedless wires...those things work very well, especially on windy days.

I also missed fish with that style hook at first, then I started using o-rings on the senkos, and just barely skin hooking the senko allowing it to slide easier up the shank of the hook. The senko was staying down in the bend of the hook when fish took it, blocking the nylon weed guard from extending and getting out of the way if the hook point. Give the o-rings a try and see if that doesn't increase the hookup percentage for you.

The hook you used in the video is my favorite. It’s strong, small, and weedless. My hookup is very high with that hook and so is my landing ratio. I use a o ring and believe it helps the hookup percentage, landing percentage, and allows me to save more baits. I think you were around small fish with too big of a bait. I use a size one and catch everything. Great video btw.

I haven't used the hook you're using but I do like the VMC weedless wacky hooks. I think it helps improve hookups by cutting the wire guard in the middle and then bending the split wires into a V shape over the hook. It still seems to help prevent snags and makes it easier to set the hook without needing as much pressure to pop the weed guard off the hook as they come out of the package. In general though I don't much care for wacky rigging because I seem to miss a lot of fish no matter which hook I use. Too often I get bites but they tug on an end without taking the whole worm all they way in, so I set the hook and the worm gets ripped off. I've always had more confidence throwing stick baits weightless Texas rig versus wacky. More weedless, better hookup, and I think I get more bites.

I can't stand those hooks. The only weedless hooks I use for wacky rigs anymore are when I'm fishing it weighted (I fish in current pretty often). For that application, I like stuff like the Woo! and Buckeye Lures wacky jigheads that have just a single strand of wire acting as the weedguard, but that wire's stiff enough to not get hung up on the hook itself.

Debo, I have a theory about the spring type weed guards like you were using. I believe that when a bass picks up your bait, the guard springs open, smacking the fish in the roof of the mouth. This causes the fish to stop the bite and open his mouth. (Kind of like your buddy in 5th grade flicking your ear lobe with his index finger). The collapsible type weed guards work well for me. Would love to see some underwater footage to see if this is true.

I’ve had the same issues with the vmc weedless Neko hooks and missing fish and those just have 2 thick mono lines for the weedless version. i use the #1 Neko vmc like you and just accept to lose a few hooks and get snagged once in awhile....the lure is light enough tho using those weights you slide down your line to pop your lure off a branch can save a few snags.👍🏻

Those hooks work better with thinner plastics like the zoom trick worms, finesse worms and swamp crawler. Fat stick baits don't have a good hookup ratio. The weedless wide gap finesse hooks are far from a favorite. Non weedless are fine as long as you snell them.

You need to wait a few extra second before setting the hook. Put some fishsticks on it and they’ll hang onto it. You also have to pull your big boy pants up and set the hook. I use those hooks all the time on the Delta with nearly 100% hookup ratio. Have to be patient though.

I tried those hooks and my hook up ratio was poor. I learned you really need to stick them. The J hook style with weed guard is better for me, but I' learned I still need to stick them kind odf hard to move the weed guard sometimes. Mostly it seems to depend on the size of the fish. The smaller fish need to be hit harder. I'll just add, my hookup ratio with a 3/0 hook like the one you were using is much better

Well if you tighten your drag a little bit more then when you set the hook it's not going to pull line-out. Cuz when it pulls the line it's going to put slack line on there. And even for a second of Slackline that fish can shake the hook. And I'm willing to bet that's what you're doing. You need to tighten the drag a little more.
