They didn't want to use Sims or Spore because they don't want to admit that none of them are the main character. The fun part of the Sims is always the creating part for me, and maybe trying to force scenarios to happen in between the characters trying to just survive on their own. Also if we were in a simulation, would it really matter? Would the 'real' world be even recognizable? Would any of the billions of people on this planet even be anything more than a part of the data?

My thought on the premise is this: if the world is a simulation, what does that actually change? As a thought experiment, as a method of trying to explore the nature of consciousness, it's a good premise. But there's nothing actionable there. You can't do anything about it, there is nothing in the system that would allow you to interact with your place in the system. In the innocent version of this, it's just pointless navel gazing. In the more sinister variant, these beliefs are dehumanizing to say the least.

I love simulation theory. It's a fun philosophical thought experiment. All it is and all it should be is something fun to think about, not something that effects the way you behave, treat people, or think about people. But these guys... These guys take it to a place that's, at best, not fun, and at worst, horrifyingly insulting and dehumanizing.

Not to be a downer, but you hit the nail on the head about needing to feel elevated. It's really sad, actually, that these people (specifically incel types) feel like their lives are so meaningless that they HAVE to the most special super amazing 4D chess mfers. Like if they aren't the supreme overlords of everything (besides the sky daddy that they tend to believe in), that apparently means they're nothing. Which is so not true, and I guess my comment serves as a reminder of that to people that might feel like this. You don't have to be a mega smart not like other girls sigma male to be worthwhile. You're inherently worthwhile, that's the cool part.

Use scripts to communicate, think in literal flowcharts, and feel like an NPC in your own life? Yeah me too, but turns out mine was autism along with depression, not a simulation. Which I think is much more interesting anyway Why DO discussions of the possibility of a simulated universe always go to the worst conclusion? If the simulation exists, it gave me a sweet potato with brown sugar for breakfast and it was delicious

that whole "arcade cabinet" thing is literally a bit from rick & morty, note for note. Also Nick Bostrom is a nut, he tends to write science fiction and call it empirical analysis. and like all fiction, it tells on the writer's political beliefs. he's called the father of "longtermism", which to super summarize is basically "if humanity colonized the galaxy and set up quintillions of humans living in pure pleasure pods, the collective joy would faaaar outweigh all current human suffering, so on utilitarian grounds we should give more money to silicon valley and worry less about climate change and social welfare." Also the movie Waking Life did this vibe better

the idea of letting people die and suffer so that- in theory- a bajillion years from now, a bunch of fictionalized theoretical humans (whose existence would surely rely on our own survival???) can stick their brains in Happiness Tubes is, um... such an. idea. wow. not to mention that, suffering cannot be quantified, nor canceled out by future events. good things happening doesn't mean bad things don't matter/deserve to be ignored.

I don't know if it was The Nightmare, but I remember watching a documentary that was just interviews with people who experienced sleep paralysis. It was interesting to see a dozen or so people all describe the same phenomenon but come to radically different and contradictory conclusions. I figured that was the point, to show that your senses aren't really trustworthy in that moment, however, during the final interview, a guy says he believes its really all aliens, then a voice off camera is like, "wow me too!" It blew my mind that someone could interview so many people with so many stories and still fall for their own bias! This documentary definitely had that feel.

I agree with a lot of your points and also appreciated how you brought up how this mindset doesn't account for diversity of any kind, like at all. I know in Part 4 and onward the psychology of the theory and those who believe it is focused on more, but your statement is disassociating yourself from reality with your own biases to confirm your own POV really hits the nail on the head. The best way for us to overcome our own biases is to step outside of ourselves and realize the world is so much bigger than just our view, and you're right that we will never have all the answers and that's OK! The whole theory is a fun thought experiment as long as you remember to touch grass at the end of the day

6:05 "it's cool that the root of this idea can be traced back so far back and I'm sure that it goes back even further in history" Solipsism first explored by the Sophists in the 5th century BCE, the idea that nothing outside of our own perceptions can be known to exist was formalised by René Descartes in the 17th century. There's also some crossover with Platonism, the idea that the material world is only a shadow of the true world, pioneered by famous 3rd century BCE wrestler Plato. Basically the bones of this idea have been around as long as there's been people with indoor jobs with no heavy lifting.

Also the mention of classrooms and laboratories might be a reference to Boltzmann's brains which is another similar hypothesis... To oversimplify, in quantum mechanics particles sort of pop in and out of existence a little bit, that's just a thing. Now suppose these particles were to just happen to arrange themselves in such a way that a living human brain with all the memories, personality and perceptions of the world just pops into existence out of nothing, even just for a fraction of a second. Weird right? Now the reason this is discussed in a scientific setting is because if you construct a theoretical model of the universe where any observer is more likely to be one of these disembodied brains than an actual living human being, that theoretical model is useless to science because even if it was right it would mean that our perceptions of the universe are inherently untrustworthy. Sort of like a more specific version of the anthropic principle. This is my big problem with simulation theory, it's not really a theory, it's not even a testable hypothesis, it's just a thought experiment that doesn't lead anywhere.

Oh and what's weird to me is on the "Why would it matter if we lived in a simulation?", like on the one hand I believe the whole universe is a living, conscious organism that we're just a part of and i definitely can't prove that lol beyond arguments of parsimony anyways, and it wouldn't change much, but that belief makes me feel more meaning and beauty in the world and art and love so all good. but simulation theory is taking that leap of faith for the opposite reason, to believe life and the universe is less meaningful and beautiful, so i don't get that at all

It's a shame that these kinds of losers give skeptic philosophy such a bad wrap. I mean, these aren't skeptic theories, they're radical skeptic theories. And everyone with a semblance of rationality goes "Yes, I can't disprove that everything is fake. But similarly, you can't prove everything is fake either." And hell, several of the examples that they brought up - specifically the brain in a vat theory - have been debated ad nauseam, and there's plenty of rebuttals to it that make a lot of sense. Skeptic arguments and perspectives have a specific role in philosophy; to confront prevailing theories and to try and expose issues in them. Skepticism itself isn't a position, it's just an angle. Important skeptic theories aren't simulation or BiV theories, they're things like gettier problems; lengthy multi-page hypotheticals that challenge the minutiae of other prevailing arguments. And they are genuinely dangerous concepts if you present them poorly. If someone doesn't understand philosophy, and doesn't have the know-how to research why theories like this exist or that the people who peddle them as techno-christian-myth are conmen, it's really easily for teens and disenfranchised adults to succumb to nihilistic, violent, bizarro conspiracies.

I understand the reddit desire to argue about pretty much nothing, and that can be fun, just exchanging thoughts in this sort of "what if...?" way as a mental exercise, but the movie just says that it's THE truth. It doesn't even try to be mindful of other cultures and religions it brings up and why people choose to believe those instead, why we can't deny or confirm that there's something beyond our scope of perception. If it was aware of that, this documentary could has been just a fun thought spouting thing to explore concepts people came up based on the theory or what would technically be possible as a consequence, however they're just so self centered that they spout it like they're some prophets, they can't possibly accept the fact that there isn't a demographic of chosen white dudes who will escape the matrix by Elon Musk's intellect or something lol (which is probably the reason why they chose not to look at games like sims because it shows how ordinary, helpless and equal everyone is under control of the player lmao)

I’m pretty sure at 48:15 the speaker is not just talking about sex. I read some of the book “uses of the erotic: the erotic as power” for an english class and I fully recommend it. Basically what Lorde says in it is that ‘erotic’ is not limited to sexual things but “a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings.” she goes on to say that “It is an internal sense of satisfaction to which, once we have experienced it, we know we can aspire. For having experienced the fullness of this depth of feeling and recognizing its power, in honor and self-respect we can require no less of ourselves … The very word erotic comes from the Greek word eros, the personification of love in all its aspects - born of Chaos, and personifying creative power and harmony. When I speak of the erotic, then, I speak of it as an assertion of the lifeforce of women; of that creative energy empowered, the knowledge and use of which we are now reclaiming in our language, our history, our dancing, our loving, our work, our lives.” pretty great literature!

I think my main issue with the whole simulation theory is...what does it even matter? If its a simulation indistinguishable from whatever tf these dorks think reality is, then why should anyone care? Idk, I've always found these types of people (lets be honest, men) extremely dull. Also the whole "other people are NPCs" thing is really a way of telling how boring you are to talk to. If people respond to you in a way you think is a preprogrammed response, then clearly the thing you're bringing up is equally pointless or boring to talk about and people just want the conversation to end.
