Funny how the more things change they more they stay the same. Extreme media dishonesty and race-baiting hucksterism back then led to riots/murder/looting for months on end, and here we are today getting ready for a second straight summer of violent rioting/looting/murders, again thanks to that same dishonest media pushing a false narrative to cover for the historical sins of a % of their ancestors as well as to drum up easy business. It's the equivalent of a cop setting up a 'sting operation' as a make-work project.

It did not come out during the riots. The riots were from April 29, until May 4th 1992. The song was released in November 1992.

@@neworld2114 You know, internet addiction is very real and there are ways to get help. Social media addiction, which I fear you may suffer from, is said to be similar to heroin addiction and I'm not about to sit here and make fun of you for being a junkie. Rage never did music without a purpose. You could pretty much go through their entire catalog of lyrics and get the message without ever listening to the music. The music was just the vehicle for the message.

It wasn't that the music label made them change it. They flipped back and forth when writing it, but decided "work forces" (police brutality) was a stronger, closer to home message then "hold office". They switch back and forth in live concerts, but someone had asked Tom Morello about it.

Rage Against the Machine was formed to give voice to the voiceless, to speak to power, and to bring to the spotlight what everyone in the 90's just preferred not to see. They sang about systemic racism, wage slavery, corporate greed, war mongering, American imperialism, and political complicity and corruption *30 YEARS AGO*. And what they say is still relevant today which is devastating and sad. I'm really happy you found RATM ... and I think you will really enjoy their music. It is crazy powerful. My faves are Sleep Now in the Fire, Down Rodeo (as in Rodeo Drive), and Wake Up. Gotta read the lyrics... they are amazing ...

Just wanted to add that this album came out in 1992, in reaction to the acquittal of 3 of the 4 officers that beat Rodney King, a Black motorist, nearly to death in 1991. The incident, caught on film, was used as evidence, and sparked the LA Riots the next year. The officers claimed he "resisted arrest".

Most Rage songs are about injustice or oppression. This song was about white supremacy and police brutality. You should watch their live 1993 performance of this song. They absolutely KILL it in their live 1993 performance. Also, as black folks, y'all NEED to hear "Know Your Enemy" next WITH LYRICS (find a lyric video for that one - the lyrics are important). You should also find a lyric video for "The Ghost of Tom Joad." You should watch the official music video of "Bulls On Parade". "Renegades of Funk" is epic too.

Yes a protest song against police brutality against black Americans. Created in response to the beating of Rodney King. Fast forward 27 years and sadly it’s still relevant today. This song is lyrically simple but super powerful. Zack is a world class rapper that can spit barz with the best of them. Check out some more songs, there is always a political/social message. Yes again, lyrics always help get their message. Tom Morello has a poly-sci degree from Harvard and Zack is mad smart and educated on all types of social issues. Zack’s is Mexican-American with a proud heritage of a Mexican revolutionary. Dissidence is in his blood.

I love seeing the reaction of people hearing Rage for first time. Most politically influential groups with Public Enemy in the last 30 years. I'll never forget when I was in HighSchool in the 90s, talking to my dad about Rage. He asked why I liked them. I said because of the message. We talked for hours about their political stance. Don't think he ever liked the music but he respected their stance. It's hard to miss their message. Rage slaps you in the face with it. Zach could flow and Morello was a genius.

This is one of RATMs more simplified lyric songs. More like a protest chant but still powerfully delivered. I would recomened "Wake Up", " Know your Enemy", "Bulls on parade" as great intro songs to the band. All shoulde be viewed as lyric videos. Then listen to "Down Rodeo", "Without a face" and "Testify". There are so many others but if you through these you'll be hooked and educated.

Ya'll talked me into subbing with that game at the end =p I was a teen when this song came out and I remember feeling like I was a part of something bigger and more important just listening to their album. It effected me in a lot of ways and helped shape me into a more conscious person when it came to noticing the things happening in the world as a whole and not just being a typical teen stuck in my own little world. All of their music had a message and you should check out more of it if you get a chance

"Killing In the Name Of" was written in response to the televised beating of Rodney King by four LAPD officers in March 1991. This song is just as relevant today as it was all those years ago. We need to bring these songs back into the mainstream... "Those who died! Are justified! For wearing a badge, they're the chosen whites!" @ www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/the-roots-of-rage-against-the-machine-767351

You must have the lyrics when listening to their music. Very powerful stuff that is relevant to today's problem. Down the RATM rabbit hole. Enjoy!
