Why waste the time drawing all the detail only to block in over it. Also, why use such thick impasto paint coverage for your first layer? That leaves you nowhere to go but further equally thick paint and waiting yonks for it to dry. Please answer these questions. Thank you.

Thank you for your questions. I like to sketch in a fairly detailed drawing but not super detailed. Enough to act as a road map for my shapes later on. Knowing that I'm going to come back and cover up the drawing later allows me to experiment with the drawing and not feel completely tied to it. It's almost like having a thumbnail sketch before you start, but it's on the canvas instead of on separate piece of paper. I always encourage students to use plenty of paint. Contrary to the belief of many beginners it's actually much easier to keep your colors cleaner with lots of paint. I also encourage students to use lots of paint because our natural tendency is to skimp on paint and not use enough. So if we can train ourselves to use plenty when we first learn to paint then it's easier to cut back on the amount later if needed But it's hard to learn how to use a lot if you start off learning by skimping.. I also add galkyd into my paint which speeds up the drying time. Hope this helps!
