I love how much you keep taking steps back to assess how your overall marks are interacting with the rest of your painting. I get teased a lot for walking waaaay back to assess the visual impact. Its good to know I'm not alone.

When you add up the cost of materials, especially canvases that large, you realize just how generous it is for Kyle to offer up these lessons. Thank you Kyle. You have helped me more than I can say, with your teaching style and technique of breaking things down into shapes. I had heard that advice before, but never really understood it until I found your first video.

Here I am, a few years later and watching this video again! Something you said in an interview with Eric Roads just clicked with me and I had an 'ah ha moment!' It was about seeing the centre subject clearly but peripheral vision was abstract!!! Here lied my problem! Tomorrow I will paint this again with much more understanding. I cannot thank you enough! I absolutely am a big fan of your creative method of painting! I strive to be a looser painter but keep tightening my painting to look more like a photograph...not what I want. Thanks again!!!

Kyle that was one of the best videos I have seen on outdoor painting - and I have seen a few! I learned loads from you and can't thank you enough. So may other vids are people selling their blogs or talking about themselves rather than explaining what works in their paintings. Thank you for your help, I will be putting your lessons to use soon and will also search out your other vids. Your painting is great too, turning a boring back lane into a colourful and interesting composition - very clever. Thank you and please keep going xxx

I am fascinated with your painting! You really simply the process and it is amazing what you can do in an hour. I have done around 150 paintings and am frustrated with painting smaller canvases. When should I branch out into more expensive paints and canvases? I don't feel I am ready to sell paintings yet, but I don't want to hinder my progress either.

Hey Kyle-your explanations are great. I’m using Winsor&Newton water mixable oil paint. Would you use Gamsol or medium? I can “thin” the paint with water but wonder if these others will make the paint move better or differently.
@theartfulsouls4529
@theartfulsouls4529 6 жыл бұрын
MR Connolly , you can use the medium/gamsol mixture with the water soluble and it might make mixing a little smoother but it would actually defeat the purpose of using the water solubles ..I've found that thinning the water solubles with water works in a similar manner but I find the traditional oils and the medium to make a creamier consistency that I prefer. Hope this helps:)

Great job as always. Do you varnish your paintings? Is there anything else you do before you deliver this painting? What is the dry time before it's ready to deliver?
@theartfulsouls4529
@theartfulsouls4529 5 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I usually add a thin layer of gamvar gloss varnish to my paintings once they are dry to the touch.. this usually takes about a month. I usually try to wait a month or two before delivering to a client. some of the thicker paint may still be soft but the painting will be dry to the touch

I’ve been painting for many years, I’m curious I’ve never painted plain air but I’ve always wanted to my understanding was you needed to have a 8x10 or smaller canvas. Is that not correct? Or is it just because it’s convenient to carry?
@theartfulsouls4529
@theartfulsouls4529 6 жыл бұрын
Debra G , it is more convenient but I always felt cramped in such a small space. I think it's easier and more fun to paint big..I'd say no smaller than 12"x16" at first:)

Try painting and carrying out ( of the woods) a large wet oil painting, then compare the effort to carrying out a 6 X 8. ...without damaging the painting and / or canvas. If you paint by the side of the road right out of your car trunk it's not an issue. But if you have to hike a half mile or so.. Just saying....use your logic!

Thanks Kyle. Is your underpainting of Ivory black dry before you go over the top? and after the painting it's all done, do any of the colours bleed into the ones underneath. All I get is a muddy mess
@theartfulsouls4529
@theartfulsouls4529 5 жыл бұрын
The trick to this is making sure you wipe most of it back off so you just want it to be more like a stain. Make sure it's nice and thin when you apply it then take a fresh clean paper towel and try to wipe it off the best you can and it should stain your canvas but not leave enough pigment to mess with the layers on top. Hope this helps! Kyle

The fence posts seem plumb vertical in life, but you paint them leaning away from the road. Is that intentional, to give them a sort of time-worn quality? Would it change the painting if they were straight up and down?

I happened to stumble across your lessons on UTube and I was instantly taken by your unique style of painting. I used to paint many years ago but gave it up when life got in the way. I have decided to start painting again, and I think I will move to acrylics over oil paints. I must have watched this video 20 times already, then I decided I would try to paint it. I must say, my attempt was a total failure. I am not sure what I did wrong----but apparently I did it ALL wrong. The right side of the picture turned out reasonably well, but I am having all manner of problem getting the left side to look anywhere near how yours look. What am I doing wrong?
@theartfulsouls4529
@theartfulsouls4529 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I can specifically respond to what it is you are doing wrong but I can give you some tips that might help you. stand back and squint down your eyes until they're almost closed and try to see how to make the big shapes look more like my big shapes before worrying about the detail. It might also be that you are new to this particular technique and just need to plow through some failures before you feel comfortable judging your own work. Best wishes and happy painting! feel free to email me at kyle.buckland@gmail.com would love to see what you're up to! Thanks for watching!

What do you do with all the left over paint on pallet?
@theartfulsouls4529
@theartfulsouls4529 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I will scrape off the dried layer of paint and reuse some of the paint underneath. I think this just comes from painting a lot and not taking time to completely clean my pallet off. If the piles of paint bother you you can always scrape them off and completely clean down your palette each time you paint.
