My intramural team in college, "The 3-Point Squirrels", did this for the entire season. We forfeited one game because someone accidentally stepped on the line and made a 2 pointer, and we didn't want it to count in the books. We made it to the championship, but lost. We mostly just had one guy that shot 50% from downtown basically the whole season, and couldn't be stopped. He scored 66 points in one of our games lol. Great times.

Upper Sandusky (High School) ran this offense back in 2005 and went (27-0) to win the Ohio Division 2 State Title. 2 years later in 2007 they were the Ohio State Runner-Up averaging 94.2 ppg while giving up 77.2 ppg. (23-4) record. Yes, they had a star player a 6'7" player that scored 3,208 points in his 4 years of High School and avg 40.8 ppg his senior year. These are 32 minute games. Averaging 94 ppg in 32 minutes. Basically 3 points a minute. Equivalent of an NBA team averaging 141 ppg. Their system was Shoot 3, give up a layup, shoot 3, give up a layup, shoot 3, give up a layup, shoot 3.

(The official record is even crazier, it says Troy State scored 258 points.) It is the highest-scoring game in college basketball history. What I learned about schools like that is that they are bona fide grown man recreational leagues when you come to those colleges I knew a guy around here that was definitely D1 but his grades were bad and he flunked off in school so he ended up going to to some low-key Community College that was based in electronics like ECPI or type would attack and they happen to have a basketball team and he averaged like 35 a game because their competition is really kind of like playing pickup games ..and and like I said this guy had major D1 Talent not like a duke or North Carolina but he could have made it to a low-key D1 school and did his thing but he ended up at a community college where he definitely didn't belong and dominated

During the pandemic isolation, i was writing out algorithms for game theory in different sports. The winning formula for basketball is (Points/Time) with the shot clock being 24 seconds and there being 3 primary outcomes (miss, 2pt, 3pt) the objective is set clear. Shooting a 2 pointer with 16 seconds left is as impactful upon the outcome of the game as a 3 pointer with 8 seconds left.

Not really. This sort of system breaks down when you have elite athletes who are well coached and there are huge disparities in talent level among players. If you’re gonna hock threes like this in the NBA you’re not cracking 33% and you’re giving up layups that are probably cracking 70% plus plenty of free throws. You can’t rotate a whole 5 like these teams do because then you’re putting marginal NBA players up against another team’s stars.

Grinnell is not only an anomaly in basketball, in the state of Iowa, or even really the country. The school is kinda like this in all aspects. Pretty sure they have the largest endowment besides like Harvard and it's in the middle of NOWHERE in Iowa. Grinnell, when they decide to bust a record, picks a single player (usually their leading scorer for the year or a senior) to go ahead and do it. He got to chuck 70 threes by himself, pretty much, against a bible college the AD scheduled to fill their non-conference slate so they really couldn't do anything about it. Also, he snapped his arm damn near in half a couple games later, hence why he never came up in the news again. He put up 100 the next year, but nobody cares when you put up 109 the second time on 50% shooting. Taylor could have played in a tier 2 league overseas, but he walked away from the game to focus on raising his daughter and his faith. he kinda just vanished, but dude was always p religious and i guess he wanted a better platform to talk about religion and stuff than basketball.

People don't realize how much Grinnell has influenced the game. Now maybe not directly, but a lot of coaches seen what they were doing and were intrigued and started taking bigger risks because of Grinnell. Also, if you're a high school coach and your team isn't that talented and can't compete you might want to look into running the system until you get the talent level up. It's a fun way to play and it's way better for the moral of the team/community to lose by ton but scoring a lot than it is to lose by a ton and scoring barely anything.

Idk vs any competent team if you dont make 2s alongside 3 you are not even gonna make 5% of 3s. The only reason a 3 is hard to block is because you have to be careful the attacker doesnt pass through you for a layup. Otherwise good luck making a 3 when your defender is 1 cm away from your chin.

@@wassup4532 Grinnell does take 2s, they just didn't in the 111 3-pointer game to go for the record. The System emphasizes 3s, yes, but they do also take 2s when the opportunity presents itself

@@bibbyboi no I dont and for a reason. Ive seen 'only 3s' players that get shut down insanely fast once the defense realize he cant do a layup. Also college basket d3 isnt even a good league, you get lots of bad teams that they get rolled over

@@eter8212 when i watched then i would say the first shot, and fast breaks even from inbound where the special recipe from grinnel (lot of hail mary passes and often just 3-4 defender in the own half). The opposing teams especially with short rotation, where running a lot especially if the attack with 5 dudes and while the ball handler was under pressure you doesnt get time to rest. Intresting approach, grinnel implemented it probadly a bit to extreme but they are doing ok in there league and the records probadly helps in recruiting.

I just realised the differences between D Rose and Ja are bigger than we think. Ja Morant has an explosive jump upwards, this is great for rebounding, dunking, blocking and aspects like that whereas D Rose has an explosive first step and is more of a snappy speedy player. This makes him harder to defend. Don’t get me started on whose handles are better. D Rose clears Morant. The refs a decade ago were so much stricter. At that time the league was slightly putting a blind eye to player’s signature moves, similar to what the league did with iverson’s crossover. Morant can run a marathon whilst palming the ball and not get called for a carry, double dribble or travel. This is why D Rose clear Morant more than we think. We see them to be similar even tho they have, in a way, completely different games. It feels like the system is set up to find and develop the next GOAT shooter.
