I just love the feeling of nice burr on scraper and there is something special with Square End.
Although not Square as you'll see in video its so useful, powerfull tool that I really think every turner should have one.
Enjoy

So great! I just had a conversation with a fellow turner. He indicated that this could not be done... MY biggy smile is here. Thanks for this one.!!! Also I am going to grind out some OLD Files to make these.

Old files? Bad boy. I inherited several scrapers made from old files with my lathe. They are fantastic. I've got all shapes of them now. Rounded to various depths of curve, undercut box shape, etc. The carbon steel burr is so sharp. They take more regular touching up than HSS, but that's not a problem.

Hi Tommi, perfect timing! Your scraper-training comes just in time and i'm really looking forward to the next vid. I'm still trying to make my scrapers a bit better and struggle with a good burr by finding correct angle on the very last edge. Maybe you can shed light on different angles, e.g. burr on negative rake and what happens with different types of steel grades... I have currently very nice spalted beech and has to handle so much tearouts. Can i finally by your Refiner now 😅?

A beginner view here, coz I've made these mistakes already 😂 us noobs often want to make things as cheap as possible, but that can hinder us in ways. I bought HSS blanks off Amazon and made me own tools........ But this steel is soft compared to "real" HSS, il need to make a new burr after maybe 3 cuts, this doesn't seem good to me, so buy good steel, i feel a burr should last more than seconds. Make sure your handle blank has grain runnin from end to end; if it runs out to the side then it can more easily split when ya drive the tool steel home. And absolutely tap the backside of the handle to seat the steel....... If ya tap the steel itself into the handle, and ya have slight grain run out, then it'll split for sport...... I've done that with 2 tool handles 😂 tappin the end of the handle is much more gentle in that regard, follow Tomis lead. My main point is about the steel; cheap steel is exactly that, cheap. I got enough steel to make 4 tools for 30euro, one parting tool is about 50euro to buy. These 4 tools i made, already after a couple weeks work I know they are sheight, they dony hold an edge and i know they are the first thing im gonna replace. Yes, get yourself started, buy the cheap steel and make the tools ya need...... It'll also teach ya how to sharpen seeing as the edge will wear quickly. But, the steel really does make a difference. I made a handle and the copper ferrule was a bit long....... I used a homemade skew, a homemade parting tool, a homemade bedan, and a homemade scraper; the copper INSTANTLY took the edge off the tool (normal M2 HSS can cut steel, I use it on metal lathes, copper is like cuttin butter to hss) (these tools were made from the amazon blanks) but i touched it with my M42 Glenn Lucas gouge and it ATE the copper for fun. The steel really does matter lads......... Your homemade scraper/refiner might seem decent, but once ya use a tool with good steel ya won't look back. Buy the good steel, over time the cheap stuff is a waste.
