The 66 GOAT in triple black and my 69 in Mayfair Maize w/black int (avatar) w/hidden headlights were my two favorites of all time. Let's not dilly-dally here Bill - the GTO WAS the first muscle car and will never come back because Pontiac is gone. Such a tremendous loss. My best buddy has a scar in between his eyes from a cassette tape hurtling off the dashboard of my 69 during an especially torquey launch. Good times.

Hi, Bill! I'm a huge fan. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato in Italian (Grand Touring Homologated, in English). You scared your friend Mark when you were shifting it with your left hand. Front disc brakes became an option beginning in 1967, also was the first year for dual chamber master cylinder. This 66 has been upgraded, smart for safety reasons.

When I get my gto, yep, disc brakes, 3 point seatbelts. Lovely cars but compared to modern vehicles, mmm death traps. Not worried so much about my driving, but lots of drunken coked up lunatics out there😊. This car would be my dream. Tho being in Minnesota, a hardtop would be warmer in spring and fall. Of course garaged in the winter. My uncle Jim had a red 66 convertible. I was born in 69, I barely remember it. He kept it til the second gas shock, Told me it was thirstier then a sailor on shore leave, claimed 5-10 mpg.😂😂. He still regrets selling it tho. Said it was by far the scariest, most dangerous, funnest car he ever owned.

In 1967, some safety upgrades showed up with GM cars...collapsible steering components, seat belts, some cars got front disc brakes standard. 1968 saw even more improvements.@@theboyisnotright6312

Those Holden GTO's were really nice cars. Rock solid at 100 mph. I was very impressed with the handling and performance. Quick story, I was driving from Detroit to Toronto in a red 6 speed car (I work for a car dealer) and when stopped at a traffic light still in Detroit another exact color GTO (identical car) pulled up beside me. We looked at eachother with huge smiles and a wave but being wise we left the intersection without smoking the tires. Just drove away with a wave. Sorry for that boring ending but it was not my car to beat on.

The VE Holden Commodore platform was entirely engineered by Holden and was so good that GM wanted to use it for future GM models but eventually only used it for the 5th generation Camaro.

I really wanted to like those, but they were so tiny inside somehow. I'm 6'1" and generally have no trouble sitting in cars even with sunroofs, but I tried sitting in a new GTO when they came out and my head was firmly pressing into the ceiling cloth even with the seat lowered all the way. I was very disappointed.

IMHO 66 is the most beautiful year for the GTO…stacked head lamps, coke-bottle design, bow tie rear fascia with louvered tail lights. 66-67 is without question the zenith of GM engineering, styling and build quality across every division. 1966 and 67 are my favorite years for the Goat. 66 had the 389 in 67 the engine was enlarged to 400 cubic inches also a three speed automatic was available for the first time as a option over the two speed auto. Still the 4 speed is probably the most fun.

My aunt had a 65 Grand Prix with tri power, she drove with a lead foot too!!! So yes, I love Pontiacs of the sixties!! It's always fun when you peel out in Peter's driveway!! Billy! I had a 66 just like that! I put a 454 Hemi Boss in it, nobody came close! I had a dana 9 in rear and a Holley tranny in it. I also put four three-barrel Isky carbs on the beast,not to mention an Edelbrock cam. What a beast!!!

I learned to drive on our 1966 GTO, equipped much like this car: 389 with 3-2 barrels, 4-speed with a Hurst shifter from the factory, factory A/C which limited us to a 3.55 rear gear (no 3.73 or 4.10 with air), and positraction. Burgundy coupe with white seats. I was blessed to have the Goat as my daily driver as a teenager.

What a great time to be a teenager in the 60's (until the whole VietNam situation, of course, messed with it to say the least.) But carwise, best time ever. One didn't need a concert or destination. As a "Carnut" since '51, I learned what GTO stood for while walking past my Biology Teacher's '64 GTO in the Fall of '63! GTO: Grand Turismo Omologato: a European Racing Class! Have owned over 80 vehicles and IMO the '63 Tempest 421, though only 6 were built was truly the very first "Muscle Car"! LOVE YOUR SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for this one Bill ! There's nothing like 1960s PONTIACS, an era that we'll never see again, I'm sorry to report. GTO was such a part of the era of the mid 1960s, very cool. Love the tripower setup ! You can't have too many PONTIAC reviews IMO, especially from this era. Keep them coming ! I was one of those that advocted a go-pro camera set up, but you might want to look at something with a different lens. The image distortion on that one was making me feel disoriented, really a bit much.

Very beautiful piece of history with the tri-power 4 speed! 00:42 . . . That is interesting to see the front parking lights go out when the headlights are turned on, I thought there was something wrong with the way the headlight switch was wired on my 1967 Pontiac Parisienne convertible, because the same thing happens. Maybe GM was not wiring the front parking lights to be powered at the same time as the headlights by design?

You have a '67 Parisienne! Nice! Back in the '60's my dad had a '66 2-dr. Grande Parisienne with the 4bbl 327. Great car! Pretty much the same front as this GTO. I don't recall if his front grille lights went off when the headlights were on but they may have. Many cars of that time were like that.

Beautiful, I spent a lot of time in my buddies fathers (original owner) similar optioned GTO conv, only 4 BBL 4 spd but with Hurst wheels. Every time we encouraged him as little punks to pour the coals to it the AC belt would blow off. He traded it in for a 1970 Buick GS, after agreed price we removed the Hurst wheels for steelies with hubs and a battery that only would run after a push start! Don't forget emission controls. My ultimate dream car! I would love to drive that 66' GTO. I had a 66' LeMans convertible that had a factory four-speed and posi, but just a 326 2bbl. motor. It was quick but nothing like that goat. The 389 was a great motor..

This was awesome! I love these GTOs 1966, 1967. Best styling ever of the GTO. Interior of these cars are beautiful. My next door neighbor growing up was a single mom raising 2 kids on her own, had a 1966 Pontiac LeMans. It was a iced blue color with dark blue interior and I was obsessed with her car. I got to ride in it once when she took me, her own son, another neighbor kid to school one morning. It's fun to ride in these cars. I was so jealous of Jimmy her son because he got to ride in it everyday.

I'm a baby boomer and remember a few of our Classmates in 1975 driving mid to late 60s GTOs, Mach1 Mustangs, 454 Chevelles, 383 Road Runners, ect, ect. I was lucky enough to have a part time job and drive a red on black RS 327 convertible Camaro. The Babes were super foxy and played very few head games back then and appreciated fast cars, in fact my girlfriends father owned a Dealership and she would pick me up for school with different new car every week. If you were lucky enough to grow up in that Era you were blessed.

It was done on the cheap and the down low by John Delorean, who was an arrogant bastard, egomaniac and a genius simultaneously. Thanks for the “door sill” acknowledgment Bill! Brain farts happen to us all as we get older. I’ve got 10 years on you and I have them on occasion as well. As to the three camera setup. I think if you can setup the Go-Pro so that it isn’t quite so wide angle it would have been better. Watching you having to fix the camera in the console, hold another and shift this beast was testament to your manual dexterity to say the least. My friend Roger had a 1966 G.T.O. with a 389 cubit inch with a 4 barrel carb. and a 3 speed in the floor. It was a dark blue with a black vinyl top. Most I had ever seen was either a 4 speed on an automatic. I wore out a Olds 442 brand new from red light to red light 5 times. The guy driving the 442 rolls up and says "No body with a GOAT does that to me". I said "evidently you are mistaken, I did it 5 times". He wanted to fight and we pulled into Texaco gas station to discuss the matter. Just about the time we were getting out of the cars, a cop car pulled over a Malibu SS 396 and a Corvette for drag racing red light to red light. As he drove away he said "I'll remember you". I hollered back "I bet you will after what I did". Good times.

You are absolutely right about America being so optimistic and happy. It must have started in the early 1900’s when technology took off and continued through the roaring 20’s. Then thirties were bad and the 40’s was WWII. But the optimism was back in the 1950’s and the cars were so colourful and the styles were crazy with styling cues from aeronautics and the optimism carried all the way through the 60’s. I listen to the old radio programs from the 50’s on Sirius Radio because I feel you can hear the optimism and certainty in their accents. By accents, I mean a quality in their voices that makes them sound very different than today.

the 'Goat' is for....Greatest of All Time. Gran Tourismo Omoligoto...the standardbearer...godfather of youth oriented engineering, styling and marketing & product package that actually lit the fire on Muscle Car era. Large displacement mill in a intermediate car formula...with performance and image. Honestly the first homoligated (purposed for production numbers) big displacemt in intermediate car. Other makes/models were essentially low production race cars.
