Here’s my take on the lore: Long ago, humans and monsters had a war but found peace between themselves. The vampires then went on to exterminate the monsters. The few surviving monsters hid in the underground, and their hatred and despair fell under a curse placed by the vampires to kill off the rest of their kind. The introduction of the internet only made things worse by increasing negativity within the underground. Lucia Smith, the king of the underground, tried to take it upon himself to be the underground’s only therapist. Soon, A human descended down the pit, hoping to end her suffering, and died from the fall. Asriel Smith came to see what had dropped down and was horrified by what he saw. But a breakthrough was found with human souls. Their Determination was immune to the curse, and Lucia had a plan to free the monsters from the curse with seven human souls. With Chara’s soul, a royal scientist created pills to control the curse and temporarily nullify its effects. But before he could share his findings with the king, Gaster was shoved into the CORE. The curse spread across the underground, twisting the minds of the monsters into unrecognizable shapes. Some committed suicidal acts to escape it, and others tried to embrace it. But one thing was clear. “No one can save this cursed world”
