So, you’d think that knowing a foreign language would be a requirement for doing an international job, right? Not if you are a US president. Only 21 out of the 46 American presidents, or less than half, could speak a foreign language and that statistic is particularly unflattering for the most recent presidents.
Donald Trump and current president Joe Biden speak no foreign languages. whereas Barack Obama speaks Indonesian, although he’s claimed he isn’t very fluent in the language.
George W Bush can speak Spanish, but he was quite shy about his abilities, so mostly avoided speaking in public. Bill Clinton is fluent in German, which he learned while studying at Georgetown University.
But to encounter some truly polyglot presidents we have to turn back the clock a little bit. Thomas Jefferson, for example, claimed that he learned Spanish during his 19-day trip across the Atlantic with the help of a copy from Don Quixote. He is one of the most multilingual presidents ever and claimed to have spoken four languages. In fact, most 19th-century presidents spoke Latin and Greek, which were commonly studied in school at the time, and often French or German as well. The only US president known to have spoken an Asian language, apart from Barack Obama, is Herbert Hoover, who spoke Mandarin Chinese from a stint in China with his wife, which they would speak together when they wanted to not be understood.
Interestingly enough, there is only one president who spoke English as a second language - Martin Van Buren. Born in a town of Dutch settlers in New York State, President Martin Van Buren’s native language was Dutch, and he learned English at school.
But the most multilingual president of all was John Quincy Adams, who spoke Latin, Greek, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, German and Russian, or a total of eight languages! Formidable Monsieur Adams!

If the question was did he attain fluency?, then probably not. He got a notion of it, sure... maybe. English and Spanish have similar words. But even if he maxed out his reading time and did his own study of how syntax and grammar and time structure (plus the subjunctive) worked using only the book for reference, I don't think that would have been enough to achieve adequate knowledge. It's as if I, a native Spanish speaker, were to learn French only through a copy of one of Victor Hugo's novels, and all in less than a month. Even with no netflix, no distractions, alone on a road trip, maybe I could say I understand some of it. But still my brain wouldn't be able to "think" in that language as it happens for most people who have been learning another language consistently for quite some time

John Quincy Adams' knowledge of all those languages makes more sense after I watched the John Adams documentary mini series on HBO. He grew up in the 13 colonies, was taught Latin with his siblings, went with his dad to France, went to Russia with someone else (can't remember his name), and became the foreign ambassador for the USA (idk if that was the exact title, I'm doing this from memory) during Washington's 2nd term. My Uncle worked for the State Department in an undisclosed capacity, for some agency that will be left unlettered, there was _"No Such Agency,"_ during the raising of the Berlin Wall era of the Cold War. He spoke seven languages fluently including various regional dialects~ he could speak to Spanish, French, or German speakers in their own regional dialect and according to people I knew, he spoke to them in their language he could have passed as an educated sounding native in each. He claimed to have added Italian to his repertoire during a four day long acid trip to Naples in 1969.

Depends on what your native language is. But learning languages is easy if you want to learn, just go to that country and force yourself to speak that language. In Europe, we have the freedom and the right to live in any other EU country, this is a right awarded to no one else on earth, so I can learn English, Spanish, french, German, Italian etc by just moving to those countries. Spent some time in Ireland to learn English and France to learn French.

Just go to Spain, France, UK/Ireland, Germany etc, sign up for some classes in that language to learn to write it and boom, after 4 months you’ll speak very good x language.
