The werewolf of fever swamp is still my favorite episode. The mask had a part 2 episode of a little boy who got an old man mask and at one point he realizes there are a ton of spiders in his hair crawling all over him and freaks out. That one was really good too. Usually part 2 episodes aren't as good but this was I would say was equally or slightly lower than the 1st one. The scene where all the ghosts are in the graveyard flying around was good. The episode did a really good job of making me feel depressed with her bullying in school, kids putting worms in her sandwich, her mom not understanding that the costume she worked so hard to make, the duck costume, was stupid and she would just get made fun of worse so she tears it up screaming and crying was so good and portrays the anger and sadness of no one understanding you. It definitely one of the best ones. The other best one is the family that moves to the dark town where everybody is dead and eating people and the family wreath is what's helping the family but they accidentally burn it.

@@fightvale57 I HATE the Ruins. Characters were extremely stupid throughout the film. They didn't test the rope strength before lowering the guy down. They understood that the plants hurt them when they touched it but didn't put on any protection for their hands. They could have done that and started wrapping the dangerous plants around rocks and throwing it at the people keeping them up there. Characters made multiple fires...but didn't try to burn the plants. The guy that got taken, after his feet were cut off, should have been an indication that the girl that had it swimming in her head should have been cut down. It was about surviving and the 'doctor' should have known. There was very little communication in the whole movie. I watched most of it with my wife. I left after 'girl with stuff swimming in her head' killed her boyfriend. I'd compare it to any horror movie that has a victim not grabbing a weapon or getting help when being chased by a killer. Started with an 'oh shit' moment of the camera friend getting shot, middle with laughing when the boyfriend saying 'so glad we cut his feet off'...to 'this movie is stupid'.

The Ruins movie was garbage. The Ruins book was really good. I hated the way the vine looked. In the book, it's described as vibrant green, the vine in the movie looked too muted. As far as burning it goes, green plants have too much moisture to burn so I don't think it would have done much damage if they had tried. And as for throwing vine wrapped rocks, what would that have accomplished? The earth around the ruins is salted to prevent spread and I think the locals would have just shot them.

Yes plant food. It would usually be a mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N-P-K). These are minerals in the soil that plants take in to help grow leaves, flowers/fruits and root systems. It would make sense that it was near the sink because usually you need to mix it with water or water the soil after using it.

@@huntersedlacek7495 true but lots of terms we use are misleading. Still if you went into a store that has horticulture supplies and ask for "plant food" they would not only immediately know what you mean but the product they give you will probably be labeled plant food. Fertilizer would be the more accurate term. Like melting animal fat is technically creating grease but if you called it juice people would know what you meant because to a layman a juicey burger sounds better than a greasy burger.

I weirdly have a very vivid memory as a kid watching, "Stay out of the Basement" late one night over at a friend's house, and it was just terrifying to me at the time. Staying up late to watch it and then having to sleep in a house I wasn't used to being in, it left a major impression on me. Might even be one of the earliest horror films I saw as a kid that made me start to realize I loved watching Horror Movies.

I used to be in daycare in the early 2000s and my mom was always the latest to pick me up. It was a family business that my mom knew the owner, so things at that daycare were unorthodox. I remember one night, I was the last kid to be picked up, so eventually the room I was in emptied and it was just me. The teacher just threw on this goosebumps episode on VHS and left the room, so I watched this episode for the first time (and was my introduction to goosebumps) in an empty daycare room at night. It freaked me out like crazy.

"no, I'm an angry scientist" is actually such a baller line. Papa, you're 100% right this concept and what the OG goosebumps episode laid down could be adapted into such a fantastic modern B-Movie; you'd just have to get the right people involved. Off the bat I have so many ideas as to how some of these sequences that don't translate due to the times and the MPA rating could be shot and acted out with very visceral presentation today.

I vividly remember how different the resolution is between the episode and the book. Because the callback is to the green blood. The girl freaking slices the arm on her father and he bleeds real blood, and that's how they know who the real one is. A lot of the stuff in the books is a lot darker than what they put on TV.

And another huge switch was that the dad with the hat was the REAL dad all along and the dad they untied was in fact a clone.

Thank you so much for doing a video on this episode. It scared me SO much as a kid. Especially the whole identity theft plot. As a kid, those uncanny moments where adults are just not behaving the way they are supposed to behave is the greatest hotbed for horror. Like the moment where he comes into the bedroom and looks at her, that scared me so much, because it looks so much like an actual adult who is just unhinged and abusive.

Plants that are green can't use green light for photosynthesis which is why a lot of plants are green when we look at them so the dad basically chose to light his basement lab with the worst kind of light for plants. It looks really cool though

Fun fact: In the original Goosebumps book the girl stabbed one of the dads to see if he bled green or not. But I'm assuming that was a little too far for a kids broadcast.

You know it's funny that I just realized, when the dad is walking up and he's right outside the house and then he looks at the yellow flowers... It's because he thinks they're talking lol he thinks the voice that's coming from inside the house is coming from the flower which is awesome foreshadowing and implies that that's what he was trying to do in the basement.

“Plant Food” or “Plant Feeder” used to be the name given to research chemicals (aka psychoactive drugs”) sold at smoke shops, labeled this way so they were able to say “not for human consumption” and continue to sell them legally. Although this predates the existence of these it’s pretty interesting how it creates some new parallels between drug use and turning into a fiendish monster.

I remember getting this book from the library and reading it at my old house when I was like 10 or 11. I completely forgot about it until now. I didn’t know a TV series of the books was made until a year or so ago, and if my ten-year-old-self had known about it, I would have flipped out! thanks for re-awakening some memories I didn’t know I had!

That shot of Margaret's face as a plant is beautiful. Looks like a sci-fi novel cover. So many "what if"s in this story. That's really what makes a good horror short. It needs to make you sit there wondering, after you watch it. Had a blast seeing you at comicon!
