I think it’s worth a mention that “The Blair Witch Project” was the OG indie horror film that took America by storm. Paranormal Activity owes a lot of its success to the progenitor of found footage films.
@snarkasticdouche3863 Жыл бұрын
Well, they both have a lot in common. Lots of boring crap, with a few lackluster scares. The only thing that makes "Blair Witch" kind of interesting is the MatPat theory that all the supernatural stuff was fake; and the two guys just plotted to murder the girl. And it's still not interesting enough to watch it again.

@@snarkasticdouche3863 What made Blair Witch so interesting and "Scary" was that it was something completely new for the horror genre, aka trying to make it an irl life event...In many ways it was an early version of what later came to be youtube paranormal videos. In the same way that Jackass is an early version of KZbin prank videos. I usually watch this film a little now and then because I love how the film conveys its story. But also because the film has a time capsule vibe.
@NothingToPointOut24 Жыл бұрын
@@snarkasticdouche3863 No offense, but if that is the theory about BWP that you find interesting then its really not a shock that you didnt enjoy the film. There are other theories about there about the film (time warp) that are a little more interesting. What made it scary was the idea that you could enter an area in this world and not be able to escape due to an unseen entity controlling the woods. Its a feeling of helplessness that anyone watching the movie can relate to. And the acting from the 3 main players is better than anything in the PA universe. Also the advertising behind it is something that no movie will ever be able to accomplish again. Lots of people thought it was real footage when it was in theatres which added to the fright. Maybe that was silly to believe in hindsight, but its also 25 years ago.
@snarkasticdouche3863 Жыл бұрын
Know what also had some really memorable advertisements? Budweiser. Know what also leaves a vague stale urine taste in your mouth? BWP. Also, I saw that "Film Theory" about a year ago, so... No, it had nothing to do with my distaste for weak, pissy tasting beer; or bad acting, and shitty movies. Nothing was good about the acting in either movie. It was "naturalistic dialogue''; mostly ad-libs by completely unskilled, untested actors. Ad-libbing can work, when it's done by a professional with a lifetime of acting experience. When you try it with nobodies; it just comes off as corny, bad acting. Sure, the acting in BWP was better than PA. I think the Child's Play series is pretty underrated, compared to the other slasher series. Chucky gets a lot of grief because "Killer dolls aren't scary or threatening. Just pick them up and smash them or whatever". But, I'm pretty sure most slasher fans don't find the movies scary anymore and are more interested in the personality of the movies. I remember when I saw paranormal activity in theatres... It was my sophomore year in highschool and I had finally been invited to a birthday party with a group of the more popular kids from my grade. We all went to sushi before proceeding onwards to the movie theatre. We all bought our tickets, purchased some snacks from the concession shake down counter and went inside. We were sat in two rows, we numbered in the twenties. I am a tall mf so i sat in the further back row. The movie begins and everything is going just fine. The cute blonde that I had somewhat of a crush on was sitting directly in front of me, this is key. Remember the sushi? Well, the souls of the salmon and tuna fish had sought revenge on me for eating their mortal coils. The movie was in a tense moment of building dissonant sound while nothing happened on screen. I felt the jumpscare coming just as I felt the a large movement in my gut. The music climaxed - I attempted to use the anticipated jumpscare audio hit to mask the sound of the fart. But there was no jumpscare. Just silence. Silence except for my ass. Which was the only sound in the theatre. Everyone around me turned and stared at me. Laughs and chuckles were heard from all direction within the theatre. The girl I had a crush on turned around when she heard my thunder from down under just soon enough to catch the miasma wave of death to the face. The transformation and contortion of her face in the moment haunted me for the remainder of my highschool experience. I look back on it now and laugh, but I can't think of paranormal activity without thinking of that.

The first movie is one of my favorites and it ended up having a few English spinoffs called "Quarantine". Those went a differention than Rec but both are at least fun. The first Rec movie is easily one of my favorite horror movies. I feel it does like... 90% of things right. Simple setting. Relatively grounded premise. Good pacing. Has an air of mystery (as long as the characters are ignorant to what's going on, so are you), and it does do much with basically four rooms. The other movies aren't as good but they are still pretty fun watches. That first one though is an absolute gem. The originals aren't in English but the remakes are. The first Quarantine and first Rec are nearly the same though.

Back when I saw the third movie I found myself thinking how they could make an interesting fourth movie without just repeating the same formula. My idea was that they should go back to the dead couple at the end of #2 and show the perspective of the police investigating the murders from their body cams and dash cams and stuff, and as they investigate strange shit happens. That seemed like it would be a fun switch up of the formula. Obviously never happened.

The marked ones tbh was my favorite. They did the only jump scare that actually made me feel anxious and wanted to scream at the main character to run. The basement scene when all you hear is running footsteps towards you.

I remember my first time seeing Paranormal Activity 1 when it first came out and the version I saw had Katie become possessed, kill Micah off screen with a knife and then sit by her bed until the next day. Then when police came to the house she snapped back to normal and walked downstairs with the knife in hand still and was gunned down by the police.

My traumatic story about seeing the first movie was that I confused “paranormal” with “extraterrestrial” and convinced my mom to let me, a 9 year old, to see a creepy alien movie. Crawled into bed with my parents every night for a month 😂😂

Paranormal activity 3 fucked. Me. Up. Bad as a kid. I couldn't reach into my room to turn the lightswitch on when it was dark or have my closet door open. I was afraid of putting my feet on the ground when getting out of bed or off the couch cause I thought I would get sucked under it. Didnt help my mom believed our house was haunted either so I thought playing the movie in our living room gave our ghost ideas.

I remember when Paranormal Activity 1 came out while I was in high school. We had a theatre in town that was selected as one of the limited-release venues before it blew up. A big group from my class went to it and it was honestly an experience you had to witness in that moment. In hindsight, the movie loses a lot upon extra viewings at home or even upon thinking about how cheesy it was.

Honestly brother, this was awesome to hear you and your creative mind analyse these horror films. Especially because (although you might not believe it) plenty of people out there admire your views on cinematography and story development as well as your trippy and disturbing style of horror orientated animation. This was great to take a trip back into memory lane with you and get a lil glimpse of your past. God bless, Papa Meat. Love from NZ.

Since we now have confirmation that there is going to be a remake of the Exorcist coming out possibly this year (yikes) you could go through that series of films! Not a super long list, I believe there's only 5 of them. The original Exorcist is one of my favourite horror films that actually scares me and its influence still lives on today. Also there's a lot of crazy behind the scenes stuff you can delve into if need be.

ill be honest with you, i had a huge phase in my childhood where all i did was obsess over horror movies, and the paranormal activity era was a BIG PART of that obsession but what i can say is that if i was to go back now at 20 years old to one of these movies, id get bored in a matter of 20 minutes because like you said they dont give you a lot, the script is dead and dry, you dont care for the acting or characters as much as you would if u were to be introduced to good acting and a great storyline in the franchise but yeah. GREAT WATCH and THANK YOU FOR TALKING ON THIS !!!

hands down i think the marked ones is the best one, its such a different feel. way different characters with different backgrounds and culture. Different scenery and i feel like alot more ppl can relate to it. Like hispanic ppl and just "minority" ppl. Its a more fun and relatable movie. i love how its like the main character gets super powers lol i find that cool. The demon or whatever stops him from getting hurt. But i also love the first one because its the original, like you said that movie if you seen it in theaters when it came out its such a fun and crazy experience. one of the first movies that at least i can remember that had that type of experience. PS: I LOVE YOU BIG DAWG! lmao i love all our content, your a great person. stay blessed and keep striving my G.

The first one was good because of how it was marketed. Found footage, you had to request it to come to your theater, and it reminded people of the way Blair Witch was marketed. It was definitely a “you had to be there” type of phenomenon. I didn’t realize there was more than three movies 😅

Horror movies were what I grew up on, and it honestly feels a bit nostalgic talking about the paranormal activity movies. While Blair witch started it, paranormal activity definitely solidified the “found footage” style that was EVERYWHERE in indie horror at the time. This created some cult classics (like VHS, Sinister, As Above so Below) and I think really challenged the standard of what made a “well choreographed” film. That being said, it also made some of the worst movies I have ever seen and could be considered a factor into why so many awful horror movies were pumped out at the time.
@therecreationalguru73233 ай бұрын
The first one was an INSANE theater experience. I had a guy light a blunt, couple people walked out, and almost everyone was talking to the screen!!
@useyourimaginasean Жыл бұрын
I remember going to see the original paranormal activity with some friends thinking we wouldn’t react or that it was going to be stinker. It was a great experience in the theatre, the value of an audience audibly reacting to a movie is really gratifying and a memorable experience everyone should enjoy. It’s moments like those when everyone loses their shit during a horror movie that really stick with you. That is one thing about going to see a movie at the theatre that streaming will never be able to match.
