I am so glad I found your channel. As an autistic kid who was one of THOSE autistic kids (the ones that like logos and physical media and watch the Nostalgia Critic and were total animation elitists), I felt very self-conscious about my interests, especially considering how “cringey” others that share my interest are perceived to my “normie” peers. (I hate being talked to as if I was a little kid). By the time I turned 13 onwards, I was dedicated to “closeting” my special interests to most of my IRL people and dedicate my every waking moment with the mutuals I met online. Those I would choose as my friends. Ones I feel comfortable being around. But now, at 23 (as of the time I’m writing this), I feel very very closed in. I feel trapped. I’m at a time in my life where I’m supposed to adopt that Miss Frizzle mindset, you know, “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy”. So thanks to people like you (ESPECIALLY you!!), I’m making it my life’s mission to embrace the “cringe”. This is gonna sound super cheesy, but my “cringey-ness” (my special interests and how I outwardly express them) is what makes me ME. And to suppress that would just stifle me and not allow me to be my true self. In fact, that was the root of my internalized ableism. That behavior no longer serves my highest good (and honestly it never did). So by EMBRACING it, I am embracing myself. My autism. My interests. ME! Because who cares?

Im 24 and I feel just like you. It's so liberating to stop giving a shit and just doing your thing. For example I got into Lolita fashion last year and I love it so much even if my local community usually gets stopped and asked why we're dressed that way or unfortunately get recorded against our will :(

This is an old video but I'd like to add that older people may recognize cringe, but they see it as just- young people and kids being kids. Like being kinda weird about the things you like transcends generations, boomer were super cringe about tons of stuff. But since most of those people grew out of being cringe (at least in that way), they dont have a direct connection to how we feel when people around our age do something we recognize as cringe.

I absolutely loved this video and I want to thank u sm for it!! I've always been "weird" but didn't dare to express myself as a teenager because I was scared I'd be bullied (I wanted to dye my hair or wear more outgoing fashion or cosplay). Now I'm 24 and I'm embracing my past interests again, for example I was heavily into creepypasta and I've gone back to it in 2019 and now again this year. I finally started writing fanfiction even if it's only for myself to read. I want to pick up drawing again although I didn't stop because I thought it was cringe but because I lost motivation due to my mental health. I only have one OTP and I think most people would say it's cringe but I long shopped caring. My twin sister has been attacked over it by teenagers too and that sucked but it doesn't stop me from loving the ship. I also started listening to Vocaloid again and I loveeee it!! Well that's about it for now because my comment is quite long already but yeah I wanted to thank you for making this ^^

Gen Z didn't "invent" cringe. Certain social norms regarding how you look and do things have existed in all societies throughout the history. People would look at a person who didn't fit that and feel that it was weird. "Cringe" is mostly just a new name for it, and "cringe culture" is just how this social phenomenon that existed for a very long time manifests in the modern world specifically. However I think I agree that we direct much more of our attention towards cringe and everything related to it than people before the internet era did. I see that it is related with how much we started caring about our image and self-presentation with the rise of instagram, tiktok and similar. In this environment we seem to be placing so much more value on how we come across and are we 'cool enough' than people from the offline world of the past did... (in general) Another thought. Most of us people are afraid of confrontation, going against other people, being invalidated and ridiculed. This is why most people behave in socially acceptable ways and feel physically bad and fearful when they need to do otherwise. So it's a sensitive spot for us. So it seems natural that the cringe culture appeared and inflated when the social media became so popular. But this judgment is pretty general, right? There actually should be many specific reasons under the surface. They're difficult to formulate, but I'll try: 1) since we are sensitive to whether behaving a certain way is shameful, such content evokes emotions in us, so we interact with it more and it makes it more popular 2) before, people couldn't watch some kind of shameful moment as they will, it had to happen by itself. Now we can explore this emotionally dangerous topic from a safe position. 3) People are still people - 'shameful' actions online elicit verbal reactions from people like calling smth cringe (enforcing "social norms") and even bullying. Anonymity of the internet enhances it, so we once again see a high potential for reactions.
