This song is about his dad, who was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. With no donor available, his dad wasn't expected to live. After this video, a distant cousin came forward, was a match, and save Mr. Blunt Sr. That's his dad in the final part of the song. Mr. Blunt spent 2020 in isolation due to COVID so he wouldn't come in contact with anything that would have put his health at risk

He did this in one take. The producers, or whoever it was, wanted to fix the few places where his voice cracked. But he did not want that. He wanted it to be real as possible. And he and his dad were in the military. He donated all the proceeds from this song to the organization that helps retired military. He is a wonder artist, singer,, and song writer. And has a wonderful sense of humor. Seems like such a special individual. Daddy must have done good!

I haven’t heard this before. SO tender and beautiful and with his emotions laid bare. But I’m very happy to read the comment here that his father was able to get a kidney transplant.

I am re-watching this beautiful, haunting song. It probably won't be the last time either. Something about the words and the voice together. I wonder if I am understanding it

Liite, you give some of the most empathic reactions, I have ever seen. God bless you, you are really special. Here is another touching James Blunt song ... it fits to the times we live in. He is talking about the times, when he served as a soldier in the balkan war. A song that deserves far more recognition than it has received. Maybe if more people listen to it , we remember that peace, love and respect for each other are the only hope this world has. James Blunt: No Bravery kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmXYoqumt9shqc

His dad had stage 4 kidney failure when James wrote this and a donor couldn't be found. After the video was released a distant cousin came forward who was a match. He donated all the profits from this song to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity (both him and his dad were in the military). They did this in one take and at the end everyone in the studio was crying except James' dad who said 'why all this I'm not gone yet'.

Watch until the very end. His dad pats him on the arm which I believe is to comfort James as he was as he was very emotional.

This song always gets me. It’s coming up 11 years since my Mum passed away from brain cancer.

He really captures the strangeness and sorrow of the role reversal where you are the one looking after your parent. And the grief you experience whilst they are still with you but you know that the end is coming. My Mum was the person I would always turn to for comfort when I was sad, but because I had to be there for her I was comforting her instead. Absolutely heartbreaking. I’m so glad his father found a compatible donor in the end. I don’t know how James had the strength to be able to sit by his father’s side and sing this. I’ve got ugly crying face just listening.

I wrote on someone elses page about a great voice on a song. I hear you talking about voices so I wanted to let you hear a song on a lousy album. This guy wrote a few songs for Emerson Lake Palmer.. Pull up on Amazon Music... "Still" by" Pete Sinfield" who can not sing... But the entire song Greg Lakes comes in Twice and you have to hear ALL of the song.. His voice was almost Operatic!!! Chills...The man could sing...

You should listen to another one of James Blunt’s songs called The Greatest it’s also a really beautiful song

I always tell people that love this song. As I do..And cry! There are quite a few Father Son songs that will pull the strings... Try Cat Stevens song From the Album, Tea for the Tillerman "Father and Son...About 1971..GREAT SONG STILL...And Mike and the Mechanics from late 1980's.."The Living Years".... Do yourselves a favor if you never heard these. Pull them up on you phone...If you have a heart...These are great songs also..

His father Charles gave him that gift because he only had weeks left. James didn’t cry when he sang Beautiful. This was one take without auto tune. Recording this song got his father a kidney match from a first cousin no one knew about and also named Charles. James and his sisters were not a match. No one can get through this song without feeling it. I don’t like the version he recorded alone at the piano when he knew his Dad could be okay. This copy was for James.
