“Standards” refers to standard songs from what is known as the “American Songbook” of the 30s, 40s and 5Os. Elvis wanted Tom to leave the old songs to Frank, whereas Frank said your too good for that Pop stuff. That’s why he said he got “opposite advice” from Sinatra and Elvis.

Just so! To clarify, Wikipedia's definition: "The Great American Songbook is the loosely defined canon of significant early-20th-century American jazz standards, popular songs and show tunes." Basically, a bunch of hit songs that most people back then knew very well. Many singers (male and female) used to sing their version of standards.

I'm a major Sir Tom Jones fanatic. I planned my wedding around his Vegas tour. Got married in a Vegas chapel & had a Tom Jones impersonator sing & dance me down the aisle. After the wedding we saw Sir Tom at the MGM. The memories of that day will stay with me forever.

I agree about Tom Jones. But what's really terrible I believe is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame completely ignoring Joe Cocker. He has never even been nominated. Billy Joel has been very upset about this as many many people are. Billy has mentioned it in a small documentary about Joe cocker and he's even sent letters to the nomination committee to no avail he even honors Joe cocker and brings it up at his concerts. And guess who are some members of the nomination committee, Robbie Robertson, Tom Morello, who by the way the band he was in rage against the machine was nominated last year or the year before when they became eligible. Also on the committee Quest Love. And I have two more artists that should be there Jethro Tull and Cyndi Lauper never nominated. It's all politics and money nowadays. They put people on the nomination list that no one's even heard of before. But again I do believe Tom Jones should also be included. 😊

It really, really makes me angry that Sir Tom Jones is NOT IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!! THEY HAVE ARTISTS WHO HAVE BEEN INDUCTED BY THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND THEY SHOULDN'T BE THERE!!!! I recognize that there are many, many artists who have been inducted and it was very well deserved. Tom Jones and some other great performers have not been inducted. Some have been asked and they have rudely declined!!! I hate it when they induct a great band or solo artist after a band member or two has passed away. Wilson Pickett (or as some of us called him, "Wicked Wilson Pickett") was one of the most iconic non-Motown R&B artists of the 1960s. His star burned its brightest from about 1966 to 1971 or so. He was one of the stable of artists who would travel to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to record at FAME Studios because of the rhythm section that was "the house band" there, and was the subject of the documentary film titled "Muscle Shoals." I know I've recommended this motion picture to you a half-dozen times before, without any response from either of you. But believe me, it would be well worth your time (along with the other documentaries I've recommended). It's one of those must-see films if you want to acquaint yourself with a little piece of music history and gain some much-needed perspective if you really want to consider yourselves students of popular music. Some of Wilson Pickett's biggest hits include, "Mustang Sally," "634-5789," "Land of 1,000 Dances," and "In the Midnight Hour." They're all R&B classics.

my sister met Tom Jones on vacation in the Bahamas at a disco in the early 70's. the host sat her and her friend at his table, and he asked her if she had any of his records, and of course she said all of them. she got his autograph and a photo with him. the day after she got home, she went and bought a couple of his albums because she didn't own any. lol

My favorite Wilson Pickett song is Mustang Sally. My Mom had a console stereo and hundreds of albums my sister would sing and dance to. Tom Jones was one of her favorites and I remember watching his TV show. We watched the Osmonds, the Jackson Five, Sonny and Cher, and so many more. Growing up with music was the best experience. Country, oldies, pop, rock, classical....if it was music, we enjoyed it completely!

Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding are two of the great Soul singers of the 60s. Frank Sinatra was the original crooner. Burt Bacharach is one of the great songwriters. So many artist have made his songs classics. Paul McCartney is knighted. An honor giving by the queen of England for there works contributions to the United Kingdom. Sinatra's daughter Nancy Sinatra made a movie with Elvis and Frank had a lot of affection for Elvis. And yes Elvis and Tom were very good friends. There is so much I can tell you but research for yourself. You'll find so many surprises that you will enjoy discovering.There is a documentary on Netflix about Frank Sinatra that also gives you a small history of his relationship with Elvis that I think you'll enjoy very much. I love your reactions and can't wait to see more.

Tom Jones was a coach on the show "The Voice" at 80 yrs old and sang "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" with a contestant who's father wrote the song!!! And Tom still can sang!!! It was a magical moment. I think y'all would really enjoy it. 😊

The "Standards" were songs that were _safe_ . Elvis believed that Tom, like himself, was more cutting edge with their song choices . . . . that they pushed the edge of the envelope, offending certain portions of the population and that Sinatra should be doing the "safe" songs that offended no one at all. In other words, Elvis was saying, "We're the trailblazers. Let Frank and the others enjoy the open trail we create by being on the cutting edge of the art."

When Elvis & Tom talk about 'standards', they mean songs that are performed a lot by loads of musicians - the kind of songs that as a gigging musician you'd be expected to be familiar with so that you could pretty much play them by ear if you had to stand in at a gig. It's more typical in the jazz world, where standards include songs like Summertime, Sweet Georgia Brown, Autumn Leaves, 'Round Midnight, My Funny Valentine, etc

Early 70's: The company I worked for moved Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, and Gordon Mills to the US from St George's Hill, Weybridge, a Gated Community. Think Posh and then move it a few notches, then add a few more! Their houses were fantastic! Tom had a Red Dragon Mosaic at the bottom of his pool, Englebert had an Attic Games room with Snooker and pool tables, Pat Dorsey, Englebert's wife was a very nice Lady, she pointed to one fridge and said help yourself, that's got food in it and the other has Alcohol in it, I told the men that under no circumstance were they to raid the booze fridge, there's being nice and then there's being foolhardy... this lot could drink, a lot!

Now that you know that Tom Jones sings "the Carlton song" (hehe) "It's not unusual", it would be really fun for you to review it since you would have a new appreciation of the song. Please do it! Ugh, you two don't know the great Wilson Pickett? Ok, you must now do a double with TJ and Wilson Pickett, listen to his classic hits "Wait until the midnight hour" or "Mustang Sally". TJ and WP both have strong delivery styles. Finally, yes TJ was a sex symbol no doubt, he's not bragging, that's just how it was. I used to watch his show in the '60s and women would toss various undergarments on stage all the time, it was crazy.

Knighthood was originally a honor bestowed upon those with the truest hearts and swords in defense of a realm, but now is bestowed upon those whom the Queen deems worthy for representing the UK on the world stage for whatever field they're in or service to humanity. Knighthood, or being named Dame, aren't reserved for UK citizens. Service to humanity is the requisite, along with the Queen's decision.

@@AlBarzUK Its not unusual (boom tish) for ppl to rise through the Order of the British Empire (either sequentially MBE/OBE/CBE or with a one step but it is rare to get a knighthood via a KBE even rarer a GBE (its almost exclusively military/governmental) Most ppl who are knighted in the UK will be made a Knight Bachelor. (Many without ever having a proceeding step in Order of the British Empire.) After that most will get their K from other orders of Chivalry. The Order of the British Empire is the lowest ranking order so tends to sweep up someone not qualifying for something better. So lower level charity and good works or professional success.

Tom and Elvis were good friends. Elvis didn't trust too many show biz people ut he trusted Tom. I n las vegas they would go back to Elvis room and sing hymns. Elvis wanted to go overseas and asked Tom what they would think of him. Tom said what are you talking about you're Elvis. My mom and I loved them both. This was a nice interview.

There are a number of Frank Sinatra Biopics. For many years of his adult life, Frank was "hopelessly" in love with the stunning actress Eva Gardner. They were married shortly, but it's painfully obvious he loves her more than she loves him. He recorded an number of "Torch Songs", a term derived from the phrase "carrying the torch for someone" which basically means not being able to get over an unrequited love. The tracks are slower and moodier. Many people like this particular side of Frank the most. "Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely" album is filled with lamenting ballads.

Here in Wales we have added a few words to some of Tom Jones songs. He did a show in the grounds of Cardiff Castle and of course in the land of song everyone in the audience joined in but we added those words and the look on Tom's face was priceless as he obviously had never heard this before.

I worked for Alfred Bishop removals in the West End (London) and moved (Sir) Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdink and Mrs Mills from St George's Hill, Weybridge to America. Their houses were spectacular, Sir Tom, of course, had a Dragon motif on the bottom of his swimming pool. Pat Dorsey, wife of Engelbert was a lovely woman, who, I understand, died of Covid last year. RIP.

Frank was a huge sex symbol but standards are part of the great American songbook and when you get to Rod Stewart he had all his string of hits and then in the last couple decades he actually released great American songbook album songs of all the standards

Wilson Picket (aka "The Wicked Picket") had quite the career."Mustang Sally", The Land of 1000 Dances", "In the Midnight Hour" and so many more. His version of "Sugar, Sugar" just kills. If you can locate "Hard Times" the Tome Jones recorded for "Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: Red, White, and Blues", you will go absolutely nuts.

Sinatra was right that Tom has a great jazz voice, but Tom does love all genres of music and can really bring it with all kinds of songs. He especially loves Rock, R&B, Soul, and Blues. Still, you should listen to Tom do some jazz. I love his rendition of the famous standard "Autumn Leaves" on French TV in 1967. His version is wistful, yet sultry... with the feel of soft jazz. And he's sung on his show with the legendary jazz great, Ella Fitzgerald. By the way, the knighthood was for Tom's contribution to music. I guess you didn't know that there's another of your favorite artists who received the same honor from the Queen. Can you guess? Yes, that's right... Sir Barry Gibb! How about that, Jay!

Frank Sinatra was the first performer that girls went crazy for. In the 1940’s the girls screamed and cried and absolutely adored him because of his beautiful pure voice. He became known as “The Voice.” As he grew older his sex appeal grew and matured with his audience. He always had great confidence in himself and that attracted the ladies and the male audience appreciated him as well. He had a tremendous stage presence in person. Pure swag!
