Elvis' voice may seem it changed but it was given challenges like new music introduced, tempos, recording devices, and technology changes all the way around. He sang perfect given the circumstances he was being recorded or amplified with, if any. Big changes took place in adapting to recording situations from 50's thru 70's and still today. Do not try to rate the Legend because he scored 100% in all fields.

His voice at its peak is definitely a debatable subject. Personally, his early 60’s & late 60’s voice is my favorite. Post army, the stellar control & smooth delivery, along with him finding a higher register & operatic-like abilities on songs like ‘’it’s now or never” & “surrender” is unparalleled. Still..I argue that his late 60’s voice was his absolute best. Deeper & richer, and able to ‘rediscover’ & incorporate that soulful raspiness from the 50’s made for the ‘ultimate Elvis voice’. The ‘69 Memphis sessions showcase this perfectly. 1969 & 1970 was Elvis at his peak both vocally & physically.

Hitting a high note doesnt make a voice better or worse. Elvis' voice...probably because of the drugs, got higher and thinner in the mid to late 1970s. That is what you are hearing when you listen to songs of that period like Hurt. Yet when you compare that 1976-1977 voice to his voice in 1970, there is no comparison. His voice was FULLER in that late 1960s to very early 1970s period, which in my opinion, was his greatest period as a singer. His voice had matured to its peak capacity by the late 1960s. This is why I dont agree that his voice was better in the early 1960s......at that time, his voice had matured from the 1950s sound, but as the 1960s went on, his voice continued to further mature to, what I think is his peak period.....1968-1970. That is the time his voice was the strongest and fullest. Compare the 1970s version of "The Wonder of You" to the version he infrequently did in the later 1970s. His 1970 rendition is fuller and more well rounded.....the same song in 1976 shows you how thin his voice had gotten. There is no comparison.

The rasp in 68/69 is very evident to me. I seriously don’t know which anyone can state that Elvis’s voice was strongest toward the end of his life. I listen to his gospels and ballads and blues and his voice to me is just so incredible it makes me want to cry. He has a real sob in his voice.
@phoenixents15573 ай бұрын
I think a lot of his last recordings were very slurred but his operatic traits on Hurt and a few others are what makes many fans make that claim. Unfortunately he only put his foot on the accelerator in later years when he had passion for a song...his general vocal control and vibrato though were no where near as good as around 1960 when he still had that vibrant athletic tone to his voice. So I'd say if you could combine his latter power with his younger early 60s fexibility, throw in some 68 rasp and electric enthusiasm for good measure and keep the depth and power from his last recordings, losing the breathlessness and slur, you'd achieve one hell of an Elvis hybrid of eras. Love these comments as they are so much deeper and analytical than the average fan 'rose tinted shades' perspective.
@lyallg79253 ай бұрын
@@phoenixents1557 , I agree. Although, I probably don’t appreciate the ‘operatic influence’ as much as other elements of Elvis’s voice. I think the gospels, and many of the ballads and the blues (wish he’d done more blues), appeal to me more than some of his rock and roll tunes because they seem to add a dimension to Elvis’s voice. Of course From Elvis In Memphis album has that amazing rasp/growl all the way through. I think that many female fans sadly can’t see beyond Elvis’s physical beauty. Then you read the silly ‘he was an angel’ comments. Elvis didn’t ‘nail’ everything he did. No artist did. That’s what makes them human and I love that about them.

IMO, the hardest song he tried to sing was "Trying to get to You", it's the one he himself said was the hardest to sing and I agree with him. Conclusion is what does it matter if hit C notes or not, he sang as well as he could and as the song came out it just happened to be the best male singing voice ever as far as entertainment purposes go, yeah there are other men that can hit higher or lower notes but if you're about to be entertained from a man singing, you want the man who walks out of the curtain to be Elvis

It could not have been as difficult for Elvis since he recorded it in less than 5 takes. And yes I have heard all the takes. The song that is mentioned by Elvis and by Ray Walker that Elvis had the most difficult time with was Surrender, where Ray had to coach Elvis to hit the high note (B8) the highest effective note and he hit in the end of the song and it was the only time he ever hit it that night and is considered one of the highest notes he ever hit that was effective. With all due respect your vocal ability can not be used as a barometer to compare Elvis ability. Just because you had a hard time doesn't mean he did. I have over 50 years in the studio and music industry. Feels so right was more challenging because of the phrasing. He hit higher note in the sun days than It Feels so right

I narrow it down even further to 60-62. His voice changes a bit tonally around 63 and if you listen to all of his tracks you can tell. I like the 60-62 voice; it was more mature sounding than his 50s voice and as powerful as his later "opera" voice, but still retained some youthfulness and what he could do with it even he wouldn't exactly duplicate for the rest of his career.

Very insightful, @@MattStoneAsElvis. As a serious Elvis fan since 1956, I also agree with much of your take, though I would most definitely include '57, the year of his best rasp singing (have you noticed how labored that rasp sounded when he tried to revisit it during the TV special and the Nashville sessions?). Your mention, of G.I. Blues was also astute. I think it must be pointed out that there's a difference between a discussion about someone's "voice" and someone's "singing." Elvis' voice certainly expanded in his later years, but I believe he abandoned the greater range of tools he used in his earlier recordings. Most precisely was his replacing of the beautiful, soft falsetto passages of the 1960-62 era ballads with full chest voice instead. He later often seemed to over-sing parts with his newly-found range simply because he could. I prefer the sonic dynamics of his earlier singing, as I infer you do too.

Elvis definitely used more of his range early on, and developed that until the late 60's. After which, more and more emphasis was put to his lower register. Elvis' recorded range is from B1 to A5.. This is also John Lennon's exact recorded range. I found a site a few years ago which listed which songs top singers hit their high and low recorded notes. I tried to find it real quick without success, I'm not even really sure if Elvis was listed in that particular list. I was more looking to find the songs for Axl Rose's range. I couldn't believe his range was 6 octaves. I tend to believe screeches and whistles are not part of the actual vocal range, many people disagree. lol A couple of songs that I can think of where Elvis hits some high notes are "Blue Moon (Take 9M)" and "A Hundred Years From Now", the previous is kind of a rockabilly ballad on a old bluegrass standard, and the latter is country. A couple of his more popular songs where he runs near both ends of his range would be "It's Now or Never" and "Surrender; and a lot of his gospel and Christmas recordings. With over 700 titles from every major genre and standards from around the world, there's a lot to pick from.

MEMPHISROCKS1; I Disagree With You. I Wouldn't Say ELVIS' Voice Peaked At ANYTIME Through ELVIS' Life. ELVIS' Voice Evolved. From 1954 T0 1958 Is Not The Voice You Hear In The 60s From 1960 To 1967 To 1968 69 It Changed Aswell in This Short Time Piriod. The Early 70s From 70 To 73 74 ELVIS Voice Is Differant From The Later 70s And It Was Very Strong Very Powerful Voice. It's A Much More Developed Voice. With Each Time Frame The Key ELVIS Would Sing In Changes. ELVIS Could Sing Ballads Aswell As Belting Songs Such As The Song Hurt. At Anytime In His Life. Elvis Had And Has Fantastic Vibrato And Fantastic Range, Note Holding, Tone And Pitch Through Out His Life. Unlike MOST Of Todays Artist Who Rely On Auto Tune For Vibrato, Pitch Correction Aswell As Tone Correction And Note Correction.

No, it’s a beautiful passionate performance, but Elvis lost all the qualities of what he had been in his past. It’s really difficult for people to understand when they don’t technically know, but if you’re a musician/singer, then you have much better perspective and/or knowledge of what access lost at the end.

People were actually mad at you because you had a different opinion than they did? My personal opinion is his peak was 68 to 71. But I'm not upset that you have a different opinion. People we are Elvis fans let's not turn into delicate little snowflakes they can't handle disagreement. Absolutely love your content brother keep going. I hope one day to get to see you perform live.

Good Job Matt, love the video. Elvis was the most gifted vocalist, he had many voices, and he had many styles as a singer. He was as natural a singer as you can get. He could sing comfortably in any part of his range, had perfect diction, and intonation. Some people and vocal coaches claim he was a baritone, some say he was a tenor, what was he then ?, he was both. This song is tenor range, the most difficult thing about this song, is singing many pitches on F"s and F sharps, the vocal break for a lyric tenor. For the record he is not singing a C5 here, he briefly sings a high B flat 4, the notes leading up to the Bflat are......... how can it be wrong.......G4 G4 Aflat4 Bflat4 !!!! Now on the Americal the beautiful he is singing a briefly held high C5 !!!!!

Interesting video, i think Elvis had matured a bit by 1960 , so he changed his voice to suit the songs , Im not a massive Elvis fan but I do like this period, soldier boy etc. Many thanks 👍

Hi Matt, I really enjoyed your interpretation of It Feels So right. I am no expert in voices, I can't sing a note! But I can see your point about how Elvis kinda strained his voice box to sing that song. Whenever I listen to the original Jailhouse Rock I wonder how the hell he didn't wreck his voice completely! When he sang bits of it on stage in the seventies, it sounded like he was really straining his voice to try and get it.

I think his voice was incredible during the 1960-64 period. The Elvis is Back album is,mostly, incredible. It's too bad It's Now or Never and A Mess of Blues aren't in that album. I do think his voice through the 60's was incredible; he just didn't have very many great songs to showcase it. 68-72- amazing. I think, starting with the Aloha, he started having some struggles with his voice at times. But he still came through most of the time, even just a few weeks before he died.
