Gion Cho is the only original song and has an MV, arguably the best song on the EP

As long as you allow it to be counted (which I do), it is a top 10 song overall for me. Love Gion-Cho.

Here's the full story. A Maiko (you pronounced it correct) is a trainee Geisha from Kyoto. This was an April fools joke by the band. On April 1st 2018 the Band-Maid website and You Tube channel was taken down and replaced by Band-Maiko. All music was removed and replaced with this MV. They stated this was their new direction. They also don't sing in normal Japanese dialect, they sing in Kyoto dialect. They also changed their names: Saiki became Fujiki Miku became Hatoko Kanami became Kanoemi MISA became Umemisa Akane became Akatsuki They have only ever played Band-Maiko songs live in Kyoto during Band-Maid servings. In 2019 they did it again on April 1st releasing the MV to "Gion-Cho" - the only Band-Maiko original. They also released a seven track EP of Band-Maid covers with added traditional instruments plus "Gion-Cho" "Secret Maiko Lips" (Band-Maids "Secret My Lips") "Akasimahen" (Band-Maids "Awkward") "Ansan" (Band-Maids "Anemone") "Tora and Tora" (Band-Maids "One and Only") "Yolosiosu" (Band-Maids "YOLO") "Screaming" (Band-Maids "Screaming") "Gion Cho" The only band I know that formed a covers band of themselves!

Incidentally, regarding the name Hatoko, Hato means pigeon, and Ko means child (and is a common ending to Japanese female names). It's the same kanji for hato and the bato in Kobato (the ko is different. It means small in Kobato). She essentially just switched the order of the sounds.

Isn't it amazing that an April Fool's Day joke turns into a full-fledged albums show-casing and highlighting Japanese culture and it's beauty in a hard-rock format. WHO DOES THAT? Band-Maid is so damned innovative. they can do no wrong!!!!!

Gion-cho is the only BAND-MAIKO original song. There are 7 songs on the album “BAND-MAIKO”, where 6 songs are covered/MAIKO-nized BAND-MAID song: - secret MAIKO lips (original: secret My lips) - Tora and Tora (original: One and Only) - YOLOSIOSU (original: YOLO) - ansan (original: anemone) - Akashimahen (original: Awkward) - Screaming (original: screaming) - Gion-Cho (BAND-MAIKO original)

Don't forget their other video, 'Gion-Cho'. It's an original BAND-MAIKO song and not a remake of a BAND-MAID song. The BAND-MAIKO prank only lasted a couple of years before The COVID Clampdown When thigs opened up again they had moved on. That year instead of saying they were turning into BAND-MAIKO, they said that Miku was going solo as Cluppo. Don't forget to check out her videos. They're great too. There's also a Making Of 'Gion-Cho' video.

Fables, since you’re venturing down the Band-Maid pigeon hole, why not react to Ohrenje’s documentaries on each of the five members of the band. I believe the order to view them is Kanami, Saiki, Akane, and Miku who has three parts to hers. I think you would enjoy them.

Nice to meet you. I always enjoy looking at your works. I am Japanese and I would like to explain the lyrics used in this song. (I always try to comment on Band-Maiko's reactions with this explanation, so I know some of the viewers who read this comment section have already read it somewhere else, but I'll post it here as well.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In all the songs of BAND-MAIKO, Saiki uses the word called "京ことば Kyo-kotoba (Kyoto dialect)". The Kyo-kotoba has many special phrases that are different from the so-called "Kansai-ben (Kansai region dialect. Kyoto is included in the Kansai region)", and even if you are from Kyoto, it is not a word that ordinary people other than maiko and geisha use on a daily basis. Many maiko are not from Kyoto, but when working as a maiko in Kyoto, it is not desirable to use the dialect of the region in which they were born and raised. Therefore, the training content of Maiko includes the acquisition of this Kyo-kotoba. The Kyo-kotoba is, so to speak, a "common language" for maiko and geisha. ※ "Maiko (Pronunciation is my-ko)" means a person in the apprenticeship stage of Geiko (Geisha). The Japanese instrumental sounds used are 三味線 Shamisen A Shamisen is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. It is played with a plectrum called a Bachi. 琴 Koto Japanese stringed instrument that resembles a zither; has a rectangular wooden sounding board and usually 13 silk strings that are plucked with the fingers. 和太鼓 Wadaiko Japanese drums. 篠笛 Shinobue A traditional Japanese woodwind instrument, that is a simple bamboo cross flute made of thin bamboo called shinodake with a hole for blowing into and a finger hole in the mouth. 尺八 Shakuhachi A shakuhach is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute that is made of bamboo. However, in fact, the actual instruments are not used, but rather the composer/guitarist KANAMI typed the sounds of the Japanese traditional instruments.

My favourite maiko songs are Akashimahen (it's not maiko original but sounds so vastly different from the original) and Gion-cho! Love the part the echoey effect on "further, further..." part which really takes me far away where Misa and Kanami, or Akane doing the little dance.
@mikeholmes53086 ай бұрын
The prank was them telling the world that this was their new look that they were going with from now on. No longer maids, but apprentice geishas (maiko)... geishas being traditional female Japanese entertainers. What's interesting is that there's a western tendency to assume that geishas were much like their contemporaries in the 18th and 19th century West, courtesans, with whom there are perhaps some superficial similarities. However, where courtesans were definitely sex workers, there's not a lot of evidence of this with geishas. Still, we have to be sure that the girls knew the western reputation when they decided to take on the roles here. As always they play with gender assumptions about female roles. Which is awesome.
@mikeholmes53086 ай бұрын
Releasing the EP sold the prank, and a lot of fans flipped out for a few days. :)
@armynurseboy6 ай бұрын
Oiran were the Japanese equivalent of the courtesans. They dressed similarly to geisha, hence the confusion between the two roles. Geisha COULD engage in sexual relations with a sponsor/client if she chose to, but it was not usually part of her services.
