I feel like this is just... living. Taking risks, and going through unexpected things, and still feeling courageous and vulnerable but learning through everything and being able to rely on others to stay on top on things. Thanks for sharing the raw and real, it really helps us go through stuff because in the end, under different circumstances we are all living the same experience. Wow that got so intense haha.

Finding a forever home takes years for some people here in NZ, and isn't always the first home you buy. I had so much resistance to that initially, feeling like I shouldn't have to compromise on buying my forever home on the first go. But we were beginning to be priced out...so we had to compromise, and bought a place that isn't our forever home so that we can get on the property ladder at all, to be able to buy our forever home later. I recommend being flexible rather than rigid about how you go about house buying...getting to your forever home here may be a journey rather than a destination 💜

Carrie, I have a lifetime behind me and have endured many disappointments while trying to find the 'perfect' home. I learnt very early on that there is no 'perfect home' on the market. I've had to make compromises and I'm now in my ninth property that I've owned over a period of many decades. The biggest lesson I learnt was to be very fixed on the things about a place that you can't change, e.g. location, property and/or house size, weather etc. On the other hand, things that you can change are another thing altogether, e.g. the general aesthetics of a place, trees, gardens, house colour, internal decoration. You can change these to suit your own taste. I found that being willing to compromise on the changeables, reduces the stress enormously, and widens the landscape of choices just a tad. Keep up the search and the right place will yours before you know it.

The cinnamon role thing seriously had me cracking up! Thank you for another lovely video Carrie! Also, 'Bob's your uncle' gets used over here in the UK too :) it kind of means 'and there you have it' or 'it's done'. absolutely no clue why we say it though hahaha

@@mdnickless With interest rates at all time lows this is a math $$ problem , LOCAL property investors are the main cause of this insane so called "demand" not the all time low tiny volumes of people moving to NZ due to Covid boarder restrictions. Many people realise its entirely pointless having cash in the bank as it sits there getting murdered by inflation with no return, and of course a good portion of these are more comfortable in property rather than the overheated share market. Excessive money printing (mainly the US) is to blame and yes it effects the NZ property market, its a big topic to understand.

I seriously love watching your videos. You are just so genuine and a breath of fresh air. I want to second the comments you were saying you got on here. I had TONS of heartbreaks in my house hunting journey. Like, tons. However, when the one came around that was the one the finally worked for me, it was FAR more than all the other I thought I loved. It has been completely renovated and had an amazing yard with huge trees and was on a quiet cul-de-sac. I had been looking at fixer uppers and never thought I could have a house as nice as I got. So, I’m sure you will have a story like that once you find YOUR home. It’s a rollercoaster of a journey, that’s for darn sure. I love your positive outlook on it though. Thanks for bringing us along the journey with you. I’m so excited for you all to find the one. ❤️

I totally agree a house buying process definetly helps you grow as a couple. My husband and I, grew so much when trying to buy our first home . It fell through as we were closing on the house . It was so hard because we were inches away. But, it was humbling and it just means it wasn’t meant to be. God has something bigger and better planned 😀

I wish you both all the best. The market here in NZ is absolutely crazy right now! We cannot buy here yet as we are not residents. We're currently waiting to get our skilled migrate visas. We've been waiting for a case worker since September 2019. Hopefully soon we'll get it. Then in two years we can become residents. I look forward to that day. Until then, we remain thankful for all we have seen in the past three years. We love living in NZ, raising our sons here. We keep taking leaps of faith; moving from Canada with three sons and a dog to the north island; moving to the south island; changing jobs...and it just keeps getting better. Our future may be cloudy at the moment, but its worth climbing this mountain for. Someday, through faith and hard work, the views will be amazing. It will be for you too. You have the right attitude.

I know what you mean about wanting your own space!! And wanting to be settled!! When I was a kid, I lived in 7 different houses and addresses before I was 19 years old. I have been fortunate in my marriage that my husband and I have had a steady home address and my son has lived in the same home for all of his 19 years!!! Children have stability when they dont have to move. I hated it every time we had to move when I was a kid. After I left home, I was moving even more because I had to change flats (apartments) on a somewhat irregular basis. That all stopped after I got married, thank goodness. I have been so blessed to finally have some stability!!

The housing market is not doing well and I don't mean that negatively, just that the right one will come through. Just not right now. It's like this all over the U.S. at the moment. Folks sweeping in with millions in cash on the west side (Santa Monica, Mar Vista). It will get better though!!! It's just crazy competitive right now. For context on how competitive the NZ housing market is at the moment, the number of houses on the market is the lowest it's been since the 60's. It's partly because of demand outstripping supply but also because, until a few months ago, the Reserve Bank's interest rates allowed for easy financing that was supposed to stimulate the economy in the wake of COVID but ended up stimulating the housing market instead, so tons of houses got bought up.

Hi Carrie! It’s very interesting for me to watch your story because my husband and I have coincidentally have a similar story. He is kiwi and I’m American, he’s been living with me in America for seven years. I also want to add that our wedding was also canceled due to Covid. We decided to finally move to his home and we arrived in December of 2020. We came here with the intention of buying a house and just as we arrived the housing market went nuts. We also have been living in temporary places for six months now. We live in Auckland for work, which was not the plan. My husband is from Wellington and we thought we’d be living there where all the family and friends live. It has been extremely challenging and has tested our relationship. Unfortunately because we can’t live the idyllic lifestyle we thought we would be living mixed in with no longer being able to afford a house here, we’ve decided to go back to America. Thank you for sharing your story, struggles, and hopes. I enjoy your videos and it’s been helpful being able to relate to someone with a similar story to my own. Good luck and I hope you find your dream home!

I adored this video and applaud you on your ability to navigate that balance between being vulnerable and honest with your audience and keeping some of your challenges in finding a house offline so you can tackle it with your full attention. And I’m not Kiwi, but I do know many Brits and people from various Commonwealth countries in my life who use “Bob’s your uncle!” to mean something close to “et voila!”, “and there you go”, or the American phrase “piece of cake!” Like, if you were showing someone how to make grilled cheese, for example, you’d say, “Just place some cheese between two slices of bread, place in a pan with some butter, let the cheese melt and Bob’s your uncle, you’ve got a grilled cheese sandwich!” 😊🥪

I know the feeling of disappointment. I put on offers on three homes that fell through, plus looked for the right home over the span of several years. But, I finally found a beautiful home, that is so much better than the other homes I had looked at, and it was so worth the wait! I’m glad the other ones didn’t work out, because then I wouldn’t be in this one. I ended up doing a new build. That might be something for you guys to think about? You don’t have as much upkeep and maintenance to do upfront, and you can design exactly how you want. Often times older homes have a lot of repair and maintenance, and history that may not always be exciting. You’ll be able to pick out your own beautiful plot of land exactly where you want it- and hire a designer.

Good luck with the house hunt! As a brit, I know "Bob's your uncle" as a very UK saying meaning generally "there you have it!" Such as giving instructions like a recipe - add this, add that, mix it, bake it and "bob's your uncle." Of course Bob's not your uncle if you forget the cinnamon in your cinnamon rolls :)! Personally, I think you probably improved the recipe by making sugar rolls instead though.

I'm Northern Irish and we also say "Bobs your uncle" when a jobs done or something's been fixed/sorted But sometimes I've also heard "and Fanny's your aunt!" In reply if it's a two person job. Could be a UK thing?

Really enjoyed this video! It looks like the North Island is your chosen region? You haven't thought of the South Island at all? Or maybe the warmer climate up north is more your thing?

I feel such a pull to move to NZ, I’ve never visited a country where I feel so at peace and at home and just truly where I belong (for context I was born in the UK but moved to Aus when I was a teenager). But it would mean ending an almost 4 year relationship as my partner runs his own business where we live and he can’t and doesn’t want to just up and move. So it’s so so scary to me, but yet I can’t get rid of that little voice that keeps telling me to do it anyway. Lucky enough to be doing a 3 week road trip by myself on the South Island in a couple of months and I feel like it might be the final push I need to move. Love love love your videos Carrie, your rawness and vulnerability is everything so thank you ❤️

Bobs your uncle goes both ways in my opinion! I'm a kiwi and I use it both ways like everything is all good and in the context of something being correct.
