@@corysapeda I worked at this place that had a potato slicer and one of the legs popped out from the concrete anchor cause the concrete chipped and it wouldn't hold it anymore. This thing was a big solid metal thing that held boxes worth of potatoes in it and was heavy as crap. My buddy who managed it was like "you think I could JB weld it or something?" I was like "hell nah that shit would break in a second". He was like "maybe, I think I'll try it." Somehow this mfer used jb weld to hold the bolt into the concrete and that shit wasn't budging. I feel like a ton of JB weld might be close to the same thing as what this guy is doing here.

Great creativity! I think what he did was pure genius. The end product is almost as good and strong as new! This is stronger than simply gluing or welding the parts together would be. You can't only take the one weld into consideration. If the end product was only welded together, you would be right. That's why he fully machined it. Please explain your comment in much more detail, taking everything he did into consideration if you still believe you are correct.

I did this when I was around 19 playing with 4x4s, and I wanted to extend an axle for 4 wheel steering. The welding utterly screwed up the metallurgy, created a soft weak spot and it disintegrated the moment I approached a hill. I subsequently went on to do a Mechanical Engineering Degree, partly to learn what the hell happened. Turns out lack of controlled heat treatment was the root cause.

@onebadapple83

Not really! It’s something like 95% of the axle strength is in that top 1/4 or 3/8 inch of surface. As the axle is overtorqued the outermost area will be the first to break. I’ve seen this done once on a D-7 or D-8 dozer. The cost to replace the axle was astronomical being it was like 300 miles to the nearest capable shop then weeks downtime! Our two mechanics/welders had it going in less than two days without any sort of lathe. It finished the job, two more months or so…..no issue! This sort of repair is nothing new!

It took a lot of capital, technology and expertise to build a facility that makes solid manufactured parts. What these Pakistanis do is basically just take 2 parts and weld them together. The final product would not be as strong as a new or original part. The original would be made as 1 solid part. Basically in every modernized country they would throw it as a scrap metal and buy a new one. Simply because they would rather avoid liability.

Interesting combination of woodworking technique with machining and welding. I would imagine it will hold up. I'd be curious to see it a year into service. I have a background in shaft repair and manufacturing.

Isso aguentará algumas horas de uso apenas , pois a solda foi superficial e ainda foi retirada no processo de torneamento , vai sofrer um rompimento catastrófico com horas de uso.

Had he understood where most of the torque is applied to on a shaft, he would have never cut it that way. Thats definitely gonna break. Third world machining is no excuse for not understanding basics strength/mechanics of materials.

This is the most dangerous thing to do. If it's a wire like this to be welded and held together, it's more likely to break along the way😅

Depends on two things, 1) Did he get proper penetration with the weld, and 2) did he reharden the part he welded? If yes on both of those, it's a legit way to repair.

Like it or not, for as crude as there working conditions are, they do some amazing things. They are very creative, no doubt about. Concerning the repair, I’m not an engineer but I’ve welded for about 40 years. It looks very good but it will not withstand a great deal of torque. What strength it had was diminished by all the machining. Maybe that axle will be relegated to a cart or a wagon of some sort. In that case it should hold up just fine.

Like the old saying goes looks to be deceiving. But it's not even at 25% strength. If you really think about it. Yes, he did go put pieces where they lock into each other and they can distribute a portion of the torque. The problem is it's only held by some really thin layers of weld that weld can pop and it opens up the same situation again. I would never use that axle

He is so genius, the weld is in the outside of metal, thin weld is holding axel that supposed to be solid steel. If he would sharpen both sides like pencil (less angle) and started evenly weld material on, the it would be legit.
