I am from Florida and I used to paint houses. Once we were using clear plastic to shield some bushes and mulch and we put the plastic on the grass for about a half an hour. That grass died and took months to grow back. A half hour in the direct FL sun nuked it. It didn't seem to hurt the bushes, I guess because of the air flow underneath.

Yes, solarization is a killer.

First year with a homemade mini greenhouse and boy did I realize that I have a lot to learn!

The great thing about growing produce is that there is always more to learn. That's why I love doing it. Keep Farming!

I've used clear plastic for rhe process and it fried everything in a couple of days.

I have never had any luck using clear plastic for solarization

Using a old carport as my greenhouse frame. How did you hang that 20 in fan to the frame?
@farmerkeith6 ай бұрын
It's just Dangling by some fence wire. Not really installed

If you organically grow will that hurt the soil microbiology??
@farmerkeith6 ай бұрын
It will. But I will boost in with AgriGro Ultra and compost tea before I replant. In order to get rid of the bad stuff, some of the good stuff will die.

Grass especially Bermuda can take temps up to 150° tried to cook off everything in mine it was 103 outside 148 inside and the Bermuda just went dormant and came back stronger

Wow. Fortunately I'm just blessed with massive amounts of crab grass

I had that happen last year, on the way home I remembered I had forgot to open the greenhouse before the market. I lost hundreds of lbs of tomatoes. Didn't kill the plants but boiled the tomatoes. Felt sick to my stomach on the way home thinking how bad it was going to be.

I've cooked my propagation house before. It's not fun. Keep Farming!

that tarp might be insulating the ground from the heat, eh?
@puckerfist66216 ай бұрын
That's what im thinking
@farmerkeith6 ай бұрын
It will at first, but after I get the heat into the ground it should act like a sauna and steam bake everything under it

Silage tarp, black side up, will heat up and cook whatever you have underneath. Great way to terminate most grasses and veggies. Doesn’t work that well on morning glory and other bindweeds.

Wouldn't it do a better job of getting the soil hot with clear plastic?
@farmerkeith6 ай бұрын
I have not had much luck solarizing with clear plastic. The industry standard is using silage tarps for killing off fields. That would be an interesting experiment.
