All English vowels for me are easy. However, up till now I don't know for sure how to pronounce English r's-beginning, middle and final positions-in the rhotic register.

The Establishment begins duping you from preschool on. Your 1st grade teacher tells you that "there are five vowels" and minutes later explains that there are short and long versions of each vowel, which contradicts the earlier claim of there being only five because now she's talking about TEN. She should have told you that there are five vowel letters or glyphs because our alphabet was engineered by idiot clowns.

The Establishment also obfuscates the truth by telling you that diphthongs are also vowels but without explaining what diphthongs are. It just puts a single letter in front of your face and you assume that, because it's a single letter, it must represent a single speech sound. Most people spend the rest of their lives duped by what they were taught in preschool and 1st grade.

The so-called "Long" versions of 'A' and 'I' are not vowels. They are combo vowels. If you want to teach with clarity, you use unambiguous terminology with simple and direct definitions, thus the word 'vowel' should indicate a single individual sound. You want to understand what false assumptions your students are likely to make and then choose your terminology accordingly. The Establishment doesn't do that.
