He wouldn't have stayed in that cold shelter because he was going to be put down. And he actually had more years down the road so it would have been so tragic to euthanize him but many dogs and cats were not as lucky as Butchy. I'm glad he was rescued and lived a full life.

As soon as I hear about an animal story in the past tense I wonder if I want to continue watching because it's obvious that they have died already. But I know that honoring someone's memory is through telling their story so I continue.

Good on this woman for seeking the most "unadoptable" dog in the shelter. It seems he also came with the biggest (fluffiest) heart! The way she was talking about him in past tense, I knew how the story goes (as it always does). Personally, I enjoyed life with four adopted dogs, three of whom lived to 15/16, so I know what she means. RIP, Butchy 💕🐾🌈

Such a sweet soul. My American Eskimo loved the water too, because he was hot all the time in Texas. I would randomly find him standing in the bathtub or shower waiting for me to turn on the water. I could leave the water hose running on the patio and he'd go lie spread Eagle on the end of the hose to soak up the cool water. Their such silly fur babies.

We have a German Sheppard Lab cross named Chevy that growls just like Butchy did. Never bites but lets you know not to touch his toys. But we touch them anyway and he has a blast trying to get them back. He also loves to swim in a creeek near our house. Chases every stick we thrown in the water. We have to take treats and sometimes cheese slices just to get him out of the water. Hats off to you for seeing beyond the growl to knowing they are just talking in their own way. 👍

Its been a few decades since I have loss my Toby, Duchess, Duke, Angel, and Night. But, I can say that a year does not go by when I don't remember wrestling with them. Toby was my guardian when I lived at my aunty and uncle's home when I was a baby. Duchess having her puppies on my pillow while I slept on it (and no, she was aware enough to not get any thing on me. And Duke and his beloved deflated soccerball Chester (which he kept until it was a small slither of rubber and we had to say good by to it. Angel my little speed demon, who got her name because when I found her as a puppy, the first thing she did was nip my fingers. And though Night did not stay with us long (he killed my aunty's kitten when she accidently got out of the house), but I still loved him and missed walking with him, he was a pit bull that I believe escaped his owner or was abandoned and may have been treated as a fighting dog, so I don't blame him for acting on how he was possibly raised. And not just the dogs. But, Smokey, Sam, Flopsy and Mopsy, Patches (1 & 2), Tiger the cats that were in my life. Frenzy my hamster. Freddie the frog.

WHAT a touching, lovely story of Butchy and his soulmate. The video is priceless, and I can feel their continued, unbroken connection all the way from California. This furry Being has SO much personality! I would have loved to know him. Maybe I would have If I had stayed in Sydney! By the way, if Pascale reads this comment, consider reading Dr. Raymond Moody's book on "Shared Death Experiences". Another beautiful example that shows that animals that come into our lives are not ‘things’ that we own; they are living beings who we are blessed to call family. I’m so glad that Butchy was part of a loving family/pack with a human mom who loved him unconditionally. Bless his family and his precious soul. 🙏🏻🤗🐾❤️

It's really sad that the animal shelters in Australia are so backwards in their mentality that they don't know the difference between size and temperament. People who have ridiculous assumptions about animals shouldn't have jobs that entail caring for them.

Well they are no worst than the US where if a dog is of the bully breed, they then to get euthanized faster than any other dog breed.

@kamikazi tsunami, your comment is erroneous. Most people who work/volunteer at Australian shelters are not ‘backwards’. And most of these people absolutely know that size does not correlate to temperament; after all, we have one of the highest levels of dog ‘ownership’ in the world. The titling of this video is not correct. There is a MASSIVE difference between a shelter and a pound. An Australian Pound is absolutely not a shelter. The Pound is where dogs that have been picked up, while roaming the streets, by an animal controller. In Australia it is illegal to have a dog that is not microchipped. When a dog gets to a pound, their microchip is read, and the last listed ‘owner’ is contacted. A fine for allowing a dog at large is raised, and when paid, the dog is released to the owner. Dogs that are not microchipped (or where the listed owner is not contactable, or who refuses to collect the dog) are vet and behaviourally assessed. These dogs then go up for adoption. Some pounds outsource this activity to SHELTERS. Some shelters take on specific types of dogs, whilst others work to find appropriate homes for more ‘difficult’ adoptees. Very few SHELTERS euthanise unless the dog has a serious and life limiting medical issue. Unfortunately as backyards get increasingly smaller in sub/urban areas, keeping a larger dog is not feasible or appropriate for many people. Thus often smaller dogs are easier to place in great forever homes. Larger dogs that need high levels of exercise and that also require significant grooming time are just not suitable for increasing numbers of people; further heavy coated dogs are not suited for Australian high summer temperatures and rehoming services have to ensure the adoptive families have really good, easy access to safe waterways. I realise that this was not explained in the video, but very few healthy dogs are actually euthanised in Australia; and those that are, have generally physically (& violently) attacked their ‘owner’, making them unsafe to keep as pets.
