Aurora is angelic, quirky and such an impressively emotional singer, and to keep all those as balanced as she does leaves me swooning every time. I knew I wanted to return to her poignant performances, and what better than another captivating live performance of "Exist For Love"!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Aurora performing "Exist For Love" for the first time.

The first pure love song Aurora ever released. She had decided to not release it, as it felt too personal I think, but her own observations of humanity during lockdown made her change her mind as she thought every single one of us was deserving of a tiny bit of extra love during those times. 100% Aurora in other words.

Aurora is loved by metal fans and she loves metal herself. There is a natural connection. This is not least due to her personality and what she stands for. She also has elements of metal in some songs. She writes her songs from the heart and lives through her heart. She is someone who tackles, takes things into her own hands. She is a creator. She radiates inner peace. I think it also brings out longings from us metalheads. She can party and have fun. I think these are all overlaps. And it is very important that she has always been and has remained down-to-earth from the beginning. She goes her way incessantly. Where do you see something like this in the pop genre these days? Rarely. I would say Aurora is unique.

The thing that really seems to set Aurora apart is how theatrical she is. She does not sing a song, she acts it, with every tweak or tinge of her voice, and her eyes and mouth shapes even, which ironically is something that you can hear. Even on her upbeat songs where she is jumping up and down she never seems to lose breath, or the story of the song.

There is a remarkable live version of A different kind of human recorded during this same session. Silja, The other female vocals in this song had just lost her mother a few days earlier and a different kind of human just hit the feels knowing that. Silja's backup vocals in many of Aurora's songs are just beautiful. The term Backup singer just doesn't give her enough credit. Its like a lead guitarist calling the bass a backup. I love both their voices so much and i think Silja Sol's vocals were so perfectly complimentary. She always matched note for note where she needed to be. Its like she was in Aurora's head at times.

When a top expert like you says she's in love with Aurora, it means a lot! The video for this song is also in a retro style, it's like the 1930s. I think that these stylistic treatments with vocals are a conscious direction - you know, these melodies, harmonies, chords, gliding. There are a few such retro flavors on the last album, but there are also interesting interpretations of the 80s and synthwave, and of course a lot of alternative and art pop. BTW, I saw her live. Being in the same hall with Aurora was an out of this world experience :)

To anyone new to her: Drop everything and go watch her entire Nidarosdomen concert. What is it with these Norwegian/nordic artists that just evokes magic in their music? Aurora, Eivør, Wardruna/Einar Selvik, Heilung, Myrkur, Susanne Sundfør... The music is so powerful, and so very human, and so transcendent. They are literally spellbinding! On a related note, I would love to watch you experience Epica - Once Upon a Nightmare from the Omega Alive show. The goosebump factor is breathtaking, as is the performance.

I have a thought on this and will try to put it into words. I believe it’s because artist from that region are more in tune with nature and the natural flow of things. Unlike places like the US where the natural flow is interrupted, manipulated, molded and forced into something ugly and abrasive. It’s not magical because it’s manufactured.

All of Aurora's music releases should be live versions as she just adds that certain something to make it so emotional. I'm a grown man and there are a number of her songs that have me in tears every time i listen.

I'm slightly convinced that the 'hook' about her voice that gets most of us is how youthful she sounds. I'm also very convinced that when adults listen to children, we're pretty sure they're about to take us on some sort of mental journey. Combine both of those with very intimate and personal lyrics she's quite consistent with, I feel like she's singing from the perspective of a younger sister that's just really good at expressing her feelings. There is no barrier she's breaking. She just gets in the first time you hear her and she's there forever. It'd be scary if it weren't so lovely.

@@TheCharismaticVoice you should listen to Agnes Obel - Danish composer - genius. Hauntingly beautiful music. Try 'Won't You Call Me' - live in Brooklyn, or the studio version of 'Familiar' for some amazing vocal layering...or, just about anything she has done tbh. :)

The music video version of 'The Seed' with her performing against the blood red sun is my preferred version, but sadly i can no longer find it on her KZbin page. While her live performances are generally truly magical, the additional imagery she is able to inject into the music video makes it a truly powerful piece of environmental protest art.

I obviously cannot speak for all metalheads, but as a metalhead of the majority of my life, and from all of my observations of people in life and around music, it is my experience that the majority of metalheads have the most eclectic taste in music in general. Perhaps that is even reflected in how a bunch of headbanging music nerds find so much joy in sharing their passions with an opera singer to see the responses. Seriously though, Aurora has one of the most magical performances, she's a genuinely fascinating human in general too; a true treasure in all ways.

If this girl was born 30 years earlier she'd be a fixture in the Bristol trip-hop scene. She'd be grinding with Massive Attack, Portishead and whatever the fuck her band is called at the time. She's a gem warped into a different timezone and an absolute gift.
