I know of several cases today where people serving in US prisons should be exonerated because evidence objectively proves their innocence, but judges won't even hear their appeals. One man was locked up when he was 18, and is 61 now, wheelchair ridden with a very bad heart. DNA evidence and witness testimony proves his innocence, and someone else has confessed to the murder he's accused of but nothing is being done. His health is very bad and it's looking like he'll die before he sees freedom. Even if he is free before he does, all of his family is dead so he'll have nowhere to go and no way to support himself. It's very sad and, yes, enraging.

Ahh, this brings back memories. I was born in Perth on 8th August 1959. The very same day that Cooke attempted to kill someone. I remember as a little kid my parents talking about this guy and he was kind of like the Boogeyman to us kids. The thing about leaving doors and windows open was true. Summer in Perth was brutal and air conditioning was something only rich people had. My siblings and I used to put foam mattresses on the floor in the hall leading from the front door. We'd leave the front door literally wide open to let in any breeze from outside. Sometimes it was so hot we slept on mattresses on the back lawn with just a sheet over us to protect us against the mozzies. Of course by this time Cooke had been captured and people felt safe enough to start leaving their doors and windows open again. The death penalty was abolished after Cooke's execution. Our sleepy little city had our very own Richard Ramarez style night stalker. The first time I saw a picture of him I thought he was the literal devil.

What's additionally tragic about innocent people being incarcerated is the fact that most of the money bestowed in reconciliation goes to the lawyers who represent them (in certain cases I've seen within the United States). Thank you for all your hard work putting these videos together. They are super professional and highly entertaining!!!

I mean this with all-due respect - but after listening to a handful of episodes, it (at least to me), becomes pretty apparent that the narrator is from the NW...

I'm Aussie and maybe it's just because I've listened to so many podcasts or documentaries about these cases (Casefile comes to mind) due to them hitting close to home I tend to loose interest when I see the 50th video about Ivan Milat. Plus idk why but it seems like it's impossible for the non-aussie channels to not make me cringe a bit at least once by either mispronouncing something or getting something wrong that a local wouldn't. Like That Chapter makes some really great, high quality videos but when he did his Ivan Milat video he mispronounced "Milat" the whole time, and no Americans are capable of saying "Melbourne" properly. Thank god for Bella Fiore and Casefile I guess
@NannupTiger2 жыл бұрын
Maybe us Aussies have been mispronouncing 'Milat' all along 😅 I'd like to know how Milats Croatian family pronounce their family name...

@@SuperNuclearUnicorn I never heard an American pronounce Melbourne correctly...or Brisbane, or Canberra but I can live with it. I bet you pronounce Maryland as "Mary Land" I can cope with it. Odd you're so outraged about the way places are pronounced. Now Kiev is Keeev... Chicken Keeeev please.. Have you ever lived in the States? I lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Yep. Originally, Chevy Chase was not the comedy actor we are familiar with 🤷

@@katehack1677 You’ve echoed my thoughts exactly. I am American and we have absolutely butchered the English language to be sure, which makes ME cringe lol. But hearing someone from another country trying hard to speak English is quite charming to me. I don’t understand why some people get so heated over things like this. After all, we grow up using words in the way we’re taught and tend to apply the grammar rules we were taught when we were growing up. I just don’t get it.
@lisahughes87792 жыл бұрын
@@katehack1677 P.S. The reason Ukrainians pronounce it Keeeev is because it is the Russian way to pronounce it as Kiev. I just learned this the other day as I was curious myself.

The saddest part to this story besides the innocent ones who've lost their lives, is the innocent men who lost theirs too the "justice" system. It honestly makes me feel like the whole "just-us" system needs to be dismantled to the core&rebuilt by those who are or have been guilty of crimes.

Eric was a true monster but he showed more integrity than the criminal justice system. Sadly, the system in Australia seems to have done a complete 180 and now is far too LENIENT on criminals. And the U.S. justice system continues to behave just as Australia did back then in that once they have a conviction, they do everything possible to keep innocent people in prison. Thank God for The Innocence Project. It has helped so many people.

Cooke was held in Fremantle Prison in Western Australia. My friend’s dad was a criminal lawyer in Perth Western Australian. His adult son was working with him. One day he went with his father to visit a client at the convict built, Fremantle Prison. As they went into the prison proper, and the big heavy gates closed shut behind them, his father turned to his adult son and said - “Do you smell that? That’s 100 years of wank.” This very true story has grossed me out for years. This video reminded me of it as, from memory Cooke was held and hanged at Fremantle Prison. There was some sort of plaque near the entrance gate referring to his being the last person executed etc. Years and years later, when the prison closed down and restoration work was being done on the huge stone walls and structures, 2 friends of mine worked there as stone masons. It’s a strange place that just makes you feel uneasy and creeped out. They found some amazing graffiti hidden under layers of plaster. Drawings done by the original convict prisoners. Thanks for sharing this video and thanks for the memories 🙂🐿

I was born in Fremantle... hospital 😅 I have lived in Western Australia my whole life I know this crime story very well, we haven't had too many SKs in WA but the Birnies would have to be up there, ie. cruelty wise along with Eric Edgar Cooke
@LilDitBit2 жыл бұрын
@@Anonymous38572 Yes, prisoners built the prison back in the day. They are usually thick stone walls, laid by physical labour of the prisoners. To 'wank' is a term meaning masturbation. We also use 'wanker' as a medium weighted diss; maybe if someone is acting better than others, selfishly, reckless or arrogantly. In this context I read it as referring to both; the prisoners engaging the physical act of wanking as well as being less than desirable humans
