Thanks to this video I'm back on the water. My 75 Johnson 6hp that I use on my 20ft sailboat kept stalling at low idle making it hard to dock, when I dismantled the low idle jet the gaskets were deteriated and rotten replaced complete kit including float and now runs like new. Much appreciated it's thanks to people like you, that KZbin has value.

Sorry to hijack your top comment, if anyone is having a problem with fuel making it to the engine after carb rebuild behind the drain plug is an orifice plug that can escape cleaning from chemical soaking. you need a flat head screw driver that can fit the drain plug width and ease the brass plug out. I spent 6 days only being able to get the engine to run for short burst on carb cleaner. removed that plug put a needle through it (green/grey oil build up came out) shot it clean with carb cleaner.....motor finally runs. hope this helps, seen this on other forums and no one comes back to say how or if they fixed it.

11:40 An important thing to mention is that the welch plug should be initially inserted into the hole convex side up, that way when you seat it in with a hammer and punch it will flatten out and seal itself against the inside diameter of the bore.

Couple of tips, the flat metal piece is known as a welch pug. Secondly, DO NOT snug up the brass nut, (gland nut in OMC lingo), before installing the needle valve, (slow speed adjustment). If you install the needle valve before installing the carb on the motor, you may not have room to get the carb in place. Install the carb into the engine. Then slide the gland nut over the needle valve. Then turn the needle valve into the carb as described. It will go in very easy. When you hit light resistance, back it out 1 1/2 turns as an initial setting. Then tighten the gland nut slightly, just enough to provide resistance to turning the needle valve. Once you get the motor running nicely, you can tighten the gland nut a bit more. The video says to snug the gland nut down, then install the needle valve. If you do that, the needle valve is quite resistant to turning, & you can’t tell when it seats “lightly”. The gland nut compresses the two small O ring, (packing washers) that you inserted into the bore where the needle valve goes, you only want it tight enough to make an airtight seal, but still allow turning if the needle valve.

Video about the WOT- carburetor timing adjustment would be appreciated. Every time the carb is removed the wot timing is most likely not exactly the same anymore. Also many DIY guys don't understand the importance of the wot timing on these engines and usually do it wrong and then complain loss of power or excessive fuel consumption

great job mate nice break down, will add one you may have overlooked ,,at 4 mins in you remove the drain screw from the bowl or dish of carb,,there is one more jet inside that whole were that screw came out use a light and look,it feeds the main primary jet, and that passage always has trash in it,or tarnish it is the low point of the carb,be sure to pull it out and scrub it out good,I use a welding torch tip cleaner ,on jets ,they fit many jets or fuel pills,,But just wanted to add that as you did a great job ,but if that low passage and screw are not removed and cleaned ,may contaminate a rebuild or cleaning,,cheers mate well done

I just bought a boat that came with a 6 HP Johnson. It purred like that proverbial kitten.... until I dropped it in the river! Now it doesn't even pretend to start. I'm semi-handy with tools but I'm not sure how to approach the problem. I watched some of your other videos, I don't have a flywheel puller and would be reluctant to use it anyway since there are small cracks in the flywheel. Any suggestions??

Thanks for the video. I just picked up a 1966 6hp Johnson (CD-23e). Can you tell me how to adjust the "Rich/Lean" knob that sticks out the front of the cowl, near the pull starter? I think you called it the low speed needle. Mine has a nob on it that you can adjust it Rich or Lean. Not sure where to set that at. Thanks

@@thisoldoutboard Yes, that gasket is critical. Also, I didn’t see you replace the packing inside the low speed needle. You need to place those (usually 2) inside right at the start. Don’t tighten down that 7/16” nut yet. Install the low speed needle, then slightly tighten the gland nut. The inside of the passage where the low speed needle goes is tapered. As you tighten the gland nut it compresses the packing washers, making for an airtight seal. You only want the gland nut tight enough so the low speed needle doesn’t self loosen. If you crank the gland nut to much,MOU will never be able to adjust the low speed needle via the plastic knob. Good video otherwise
