II know you changed top seal now I can't help but wonder if the lower seal is bad you could check it with the soapy water trick before disassembly of engine when you pull the power head first by taking plugs out and putting soapy water on that seal then spinning the flywheel by hand to see if you see bubbles around that seal. It seems like it might be bad and when you come off plane with the boat its sucking exhaust water through it since their could be a lot of water in there at that point. It also could just be sucking air through it also especially since when you put your hand over that bottom carb it doesn't make much difference I wonder since you changed top seal if it would make a difference now when you put your hand over that top carb. You also sprayed that carb cleaner everywhere looking for air leaks but couldn't find any that seal you really can't check without power head off. Also I wonder if you could have something going on under the exhaust plate and its sucking water into that bottom cylinder since it especially looks washed and the motor has to be warm maybe try re-torque on them first. Maybe a bad head gasket could also make cylinder wash have you tried re-torque on it to see if something might have loosened up. Just my 2 cents I know you will figure it out. Like you said after compression the rest is a pain in the Azz

Sometimes it's better to just cut your losses and move on. Running junk can be frustrating. That 1992 60 hp looks pretty good. The 56 cu. in. triples are excellent motors in general. I've been running the 70's for years, same motor, basically. Your battery will like the regulator/rectifier. ...Be wary of the VRO. The biggest cause of outboard failure. Much better to mix the fuel yourself....The saga of the 55 sure reminds me of my last Merc, an old 80 hp 4 cylinder, which is still in the creek where I tossed it in a fit of rage. Forty feet from the boat to the creek, 300 lb motor. Hell, 7 years later, I'd be doing good just to get it off the boat. I must have been pretty "frustrated" to huggy bear that beast off the transom and carry it 40 ft to the creek, heh heh.....Good luck on that 60. I suspect, from the appearance, that it's likely a good one. My trim & tilt has always been kinda noisy. Still works, though I have to trace occasional switch issues.

Here are the important bulletins concerning the 60-70hp 3 bangers. 60 & 70 hp service bulletins for cooling and overheating SB 2221 Temp sensor new sensor pn 584166, tan/blue stripe wire. SB 2225 thermostat seat new seat pn 336416, may not need this in fresh water. SB 2271 jet and timing kits ds SB 2276R1 relocate tell tale nipple to top of block. SB 2276R1 waterpump kit PN 432995 water pump kit also includes new water tell-tale nipples and thermostat gaskets and springs for updating the motor. I also would not make fine carb adjustments with muffs on, the prop exhaust needs to be in the water to get it 100 percent perfect.

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 No problem, those are great engines. You can turn your 60 into a 70 if you can find a set of carbs from a 70 and change the tuner stack. If you just add carbs it may not be a full 70hp. I would look for one with a blown powerhead.

Are you sure it's not a fuel issue? The bulb going flat says a blockage, check right from your tank and work towards your pump. Hope this helps

OK so it's 4:30 in the morning and I am losing sleep over the 55. I know you eliminated a fuel system culprit BUT life and outboards being how they are....... If lets say there was a flap ,or trash , or something, sometimes blocking the fuel flow from tank ; then sometimes the motor would run fine; sometimes it would not be able to get enough gas; fuel bulb goes soft etc.etc. For me, so I can get some sleep, please borrow another tank and fuel line, maybe change out fuel connector on the motor and see if it does the same thing. You are dealing with outboard Gods with a sense of humor if nothing else! Hope it works LMK Jay Fisher

Move forward on this set back. Karma will catch up! On the 55 I would check the the seal you put in there that arrived split. You may be getting some leaking when hot. Also damage to power block left when you had to remove the stuck head bolt might be a leak issue as well. I think you are on to something on the clean reeds. As this engine is getting hot, i think there is a water leak somewhere. It also might be the reason the engine is taking so long to warm up. Water entering and cooling the wrong place. The 60 might be you way out.

Hey Al. Thanks again for tuning in. Yes I ran it on one cylinder at a time a few times. It was always the top seemed a bit weaker and not pulling as hard. Thats when I changed the top crank seal. It seemed good at first but ended up doing the same thing all over again. Hopefully I'll have the 60 up and running in a week or so. Then I'll tear down the 55 and find out just whats going on. unbelievable. who robs engine parts like that? sorry man thats terrible! I've got some spare stuff i can send you for free if you need something as a donation to the channel. One the 60hp: Check cranking voltage at the primary wires first with a stevens load adapter. Can send you mine if you return it haha. Will tell you if the power pack is cranking out the 200 ish volts on each cyl. If it is, you then you test the timer base, then the charge coil. one of those will be bad. if the pack test shows one cyl low or no volts and the other tests (charge and timer base) come out good, replace the pack.

Hey. I've been trying to learn this dva thing using the specs off of cdi's website. Total pain in the azz! The biggest problem I'm having is no clear instructions/procedures. Cant find a decent video on it either. Very frustrating to say the least. Anyway are there any detailed step by step instructions out there anywhere? @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 my recommendation: Ditch the CDI guide, and get a 1992-1998 3 cyl factory manual for $20 off ebay. not aftermarket junk. it is super clear and numbered steps to do the tests. you will need a few things:CDI Coil extenders, amphenol jumper wires, and those little alligator clip wires along with your DVA adapter. That powerpack diode test is helpful and really much easier to diagnose, but you can get by without it with the terminal extenders since you know its not the coils.You can pinpoint with no guessing. I promise you its not difficult. did you first disconnect the black/yellow kill wire and put a voltmeter to it with the key in the ON position? if you replace the pack, and still have voltage on that kill wire, it will cause the pack to fail again

by now im guessing it's definitely a crank case leak somewhere as you've been saying, but the no start makes me think its got shot piston skirts (hopefully not from running without the air box). the dry crank would point to that, too. can't pull in fuel under vacuum!

@@ct1762 that’s where I’m leaning now because of the dry inner surfaces ... but if he pulls the engine , how much wash will be in the leg is what I’m wondering ?! Didn’t he say there was 120 lbs in all cylinders ? I think a leak down test on the block would be in order ! Or smoke test also .
