Thomas's character development on this show was incredible. Yes, he started as a rude, conniving, two faced bully, but over the show and years turned into someone who would take over the care of Downton Abbey and become a friend to everyone. He's had so many moments of meanness, but also in moments like this and another moment I remember, when he's shaking and crying while putting his lighter in the air to have his hand shot during the war, because he was so scared... it's those moments when his vulnerability shows that I feel my heart hurting for him.

I love his development but I his acts of cruelty continued way too far into the series to make his change in the last season fully believable. It was so hard to feel bad for him when he took every oppurtunity to punish, taunt, and torture the people around him. So much so that his moments of vulnerability came off less sympathetic and more deserving of hardship. Which is the beauty of his character. Thomas is not a good person. And he doesn't become a good person by the end of the series. But he is learning.

@pipermeh3350 I agree, but I feel like a lot of his cruelty towards others was a reflection on how he has been treated his whole life. When Lady Sybil dies, he cries for her and says that she is one of the few people who have been kind to him and there weren't many. Not excusing his behavior, but I feel like his character thinks the only way to make it in with the world is through the only way he's been treated (cruelty). Now I think it's more of a deflection. And I do agree his character should have turned good a little sooner, but he got there eventually.

Aren’t we the little critics. . . . . . I always expected a call from Julian Fellowes: “Cat, how should I write the Barrow character in the next season?” - I blame O’Brien 😂

@@pipermeh3350 I agree with the original poster when she calls him a conniving, nasty bully. He was dreadful to everyone. And I agree with all you say. The little bit of goodness at the very end didn't melt my heart on bit.

I agree that he picked up some of his bad ways from watching Obrien. One of the only things that gave me hope for him was after the black market debacle, he didn't immediately attempt to sell the merch off to someone else. Knowing him up to that point, I didn't think he had that much integrity. I expected he would gladly sucker someone else. @@catcauldron217

He deserves it. He does so much that creates his own problems. And he consistently puts himself in bad positions. Perfect example of a person who knows better, keeps doing wrong, and then asks why him?

I appreciated the fact that he acknowledged that later on in the series. @@pipermeh3350

It's been at least a year or two since I've seen these episodes but I'm still able to quote many of the lines. "He knows this is just the sprat to catch the mackerel." 😄

Thank you for this channel. We miss Downton on PBS Masterpiece Theatre; here's hoping it will run again soon and not on streaming services.

I always wonder if they manage to get such meltdown scenes in a single take? Because it seems impossible to do it a second time.

Every actor in the cast was a pro. But in destruction scenes like this one, if the effects don't give the desired result, they clean up the place, restock it and do it again. At this phase, the series had become very profitable in terms of international distribution. I bet even the downstairs maids got a raise. 😃

Spoiler alert, don’t read this comment if you haven’t seen the whole show. I think everyone is forgetting about the hardships Mr. Barrow had to endure. Remember that episode when he was really down about his life, and he tried to commit suicide in the bathtub. he was discovered by the ladies made, and the second footman, Andy.

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving person. Thomas was a horrible individual. Maybe if he was nicer to those around him, he would've had a better time of it.

A TV character who is always nice is no fun and had no chance of development, That's my opinion of Mr Bates. I really don't like him at all.

I can understand Thomas being as he is most of the time, especially with Mr bates, who waltzed in and got a valet job because he knew the boss when Thomas had been there for years, and who quite honestly is way too sanctimonious and really boring.

I'm only just getting into Downton now for the first time thanks to SkyQ-ing the ITV3 daily repeats. This storyline where the deeply unlikeable Thomas Barrow got ripped off of all his money bugged me cos it just instantly fizzled out....
