Thomas Sowell is what our young people should be idolising. Genuinely wish I'd heard of him sooner. A great man.

@@joelpacheco4748 Dr. Sowell's backstory is really interesting. He was a young Black rebel and his family finally told him to hit the bricks for his trouble making. Resentful and naive, he discovered the value of a meal when it became clear he would have to support himself. Literally standing in front of a diner's window, he recalled feeling nearly faint with hunger especially since he could smell the burgers cooking within. A patron noticed and waved him in. He asked why Sowell was unable to buy a burger and the conversation that followed was the pivot point of his life. The man summoned a waitress and told her to keep the burgers coming while Sowell told his life story. At the end, this kind individual recommended he join the Marines so he could learn order, discipline, and dedication. Sowell did just that. When he got out, he began to research Karl Marx's revolutionist theories as a student under the GI Bill. Having consumed all 2,500 pages of Marx, he began promoting Socialism. But in his ensuing years he came to understand with much more clarity that Socialism is a trap. In his decades of research, he became a powerful champion of INDIVIDUAL initiative and freedom especially for young Black citizens. College professors refuse to debate him since he is an expert on Marx but students are very enthusiastic consumers of his dozens of books.

@@trishfitzpatrick2066 I can't reject the idea that he is an excellent citizen, I start swatching his debates by mere coincidence, and he is amazing and now reading the quick biography that you shared amazes me more. Don't get me wrong, I've learned a lot in very little from him, I'm just saying that the idolizing exaggerates reality when is tors a human being..

@@joelpacheco4748 Very much agree. I can separate the concept of Thomas Sowell's utility and his person. I have most of his books and use them as a resource often for economic issues. But I also find him a curious person full of surprising revelations. One of his most recent works is Discrimination and Disparities, discussing the idea of distribution. Somehow we humans like to believe that there will be some degree of evenly distributed attributes among elements, whether personal or in nature. But it is absolutely untrue. Example, I lived in Florida where some 90% of lightning strikes of the world occur. I can easily testify to that; we had to head indoors pretty much every afternoon of the summer for our regular strikes. We were hit in the backyard several times and they were SPECTACULAR! One strike literally caused a timer to go off all by itself and I had trouble hearing for a couple of days! I lived in Alabama which is at the tail end of Tornado Alley and got caught in one personally. This area is about 90% of the world's tornadoes. Ashkenazi Jews are 2% of the US and yet 27% of United States Nobel prize winners in the 20th century, 25% of the winners of the Fields Medal (the top prize in mathematics), and 25% of Alan Turing (computations) Award winners. They have the highest average IQ as a group and kick ass in stuff like verbal reasoning, working memory, and mathematical computation. However, they're kinda dumb in visual/spatial reckoning. A tennis court size pond in the Amazon Rain forest contains 80 times more species of fish than are found in all bodies of water together in the UK. Why this is all true is fascinating. How it occurs to a person to think of these things... research and write about this stuff is amazing all by itself. And I am reminded constantly what a slug I am in comparison, LOL!

I saw photos of the Federal food aid during the Depression, people were getting potatoes, beets, carrots, turnips, cabbage, etc. It was all root vegetables or hearty stuff that didn't need refrigeration. Today it's hamburger helper, kraft mac n' cheese, canned soups, junk food, etc. The free food was healthier in the 1930's, even though there wasn't all this talk about nutrition.

It's easy to say "all is good" if the government is propping up the economy. $19 trillion and growing. That is why the federal bank refuses to raise interest rates. When Obama leaves office and the rates HAVE to go up all our taxes will have to pay interest on $20 trillion debt. That will not leave any money to cover anything else. You should read his book before judging him. Its a good book. Oh and its far from Illogical.

I'm glad someone else besides me understands the link between the forced relaxation of lending standards, the boom in federally subsidized loans which were later used as the basis of mortgage-backed securities, and the subsequent bust of the housing market. It's not simply "the Banks got greedy.' Sure they did, but governmental tampering with the market facilitated and encouraged it.

It's the scumbag judges that are mainstreaming this Insanity in to society when they rule in favor of things that they shouldn't even be hearing in the first place.Currently the Constitution is whatever these crackpot- corrupt judges claim it is. they are the Closest thing we have to an autocratic monarchy, the lifetime appointed, unaccountable- federal court judges .

Since they joined the Euro, that caused an imbalance of transfer payments across the Eurozone nations, and foreign money poured into Spain's real estate sector, causing a housing bubble. When that bubble collapsed, Spain were in a debt crisis because they had lost control of their monetary policy and the ability to print their own currency, when they joined the Euro and they couldn't spend their way out of recessions anymore.

Apparently for all Sowell's complaints about how Europe doesn't understand arithmetic, neither does he, because when you have nations sharing a currency, not all the nations can be in surplus, as a matter of basic accounting, and it's no wonder then that Germany has profited from the Euro, exporting heavily to its neighbouring consumer nations while others are in trouble.

I'm not saying governments actions haven't contributed to it, just that the net results of their actions have been to reduce market regulations, not increase them. Post-incident intervention, right or wrong, isn't the same as regulation, bail-outs weren't the cause of the crisis, and it's not what I was talking about. An organism is not an indivisible system, either (cells, organelles, molecules). When all is said and done, I agree with you, but seeing that certainty here doesn't abound, your confidence on the matter alarms me somewhat. The difference between the entrepreneur and the government official is the object of their responsibility: the entrepreneur's responsibility encompasses only one's own business, whereas the official is elected or appointed to overlook public business (in the broader sense).

A more accurate analogy would go like this. You go to the doctor for a routine checkup. In that routine checkup lets say he happens to use some dirty equipment, giving you an infection. You come back to him for treatment of the infection. He again unknowingly uses unsanitary equipment furthring the infection, and this goes on and on neither him nor you knowing why your entire body is riddled with infection. Can't fix an economy using the same principles that got you into the mess intitially

What percentage of that was defense spending? Or is the argument that the Cold War build up was just a pretext for enacting Keynsian economics?

How GREAT America could have been IF the people had elected *Thomas Sowell* as a PERMANENT PRESIDENT when he was 45 yrs old. Honest men can never be *politicians* ---- *deception* is not in their nature.

1. Only Sowell didn't blame it all on Clinton. But the point was a response to Clinton who blamed it all on Republicans when he himself should know about his share of the blame. 2. Recession, of course. But it was Mrs Obama who claimed it all for her husband. 3. He didn't talk about a prsident 150 years ago but about Harding who was president in the 1920s. And of course, unemployment was recorded in the 20s. After all, Sowell gives the figures. PS. Biasness is not a word.

And that's what the useful idiots and clapping seals never seem to think of: most of these Democrat politicians are worth tens of millions of dollars, they don't live like the fools voting for them, blindly.

The United States has made its way out of situations worse than the present one. The debt now is 74% of GDP; by the end of WWII it was 112% of GDP. I don't buy that the United States is declining. It made sense to people when the Great Recession was here, but the Recession was nothing compared to the Depression. What's your definition of “overconsumption”? There's no economy without consumption.

Clinton enacted the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, removing regulations preventing financial institutions from consolidating. He also authorized the buying of sub-prime mortgages, encouraging loans to low-income households, which was in turn further encouraged by the Bush administration who looked to actively increase this type of lending. All of this is market deregulation. Don't think there's much there that you couldn't find in pretty much any newspaper or economic journal.
