Thank you to whomever had the foresight to record this speech for me to be able to enjoy in my adulthood when I could better understand it than in 1998 (I was 1 year old).

This is one of my favorite of Sowell's books--and that's saying something. I haven't read the other two in the series, but they're on my list.

I've become an admire of this man, Thomas Sowell, for how he thinks.

I love Thomas Sowell. His down to earth logical ideas have helped me greatly over the years. All politicians should have to learn from Thomas Sowell and all people should be aware of his teaching. He is a rare diamond in a field of dust!

When he's talking about the difference between the European and African coastlines, around 22:10, you can see the glee on his face; his revelling in having learnt a beautiful new fact. Wonderful to see such a love of learning and knowledge; it's the sort of thing that keeps you going beyond the age of 90!

the big advantage of a harbour on an island or a peninsula is, that you have to fear less an attack from the land side. You can run a trading hub with very little defense. That's why the little Caribbean islands were so sought off in the beginning of the American colonization and that's why in Africa the best places for a trading hub were the Cabo Verde Islands or Sao Tomé, Principe and Anabon in the West and Sansibar in the East. The same is true for Manhattan. What was the big advantage of Manhattan for the Dutch? The fact that it is an island. Any indians who would want to attack it, would first have to cross the river by boat. If you don't have a thousand canoes or something, you cannot make a large surprize attack. To keep 150 soldiers with muskets in the settlement would be enough to defend it.

Please can everyone read even just one of Thomas Sowell’s books and then pass it on. Especially teachers.

GOAT! One of my heroes. He is an inspiration to me. "And then what happens, and after that, and after that" If more people, especially politicians, would use this thinking we would be better off.

If only our leaders would promote policies informed by Sowell's research, our culture and nation and the world would improve instead of disintegrating as it is now!

Dear @basiceconomics: Who, in your personal opinion, do you see as the libertarian/conservative voice for economics in this present moment in time? To me, the “left” has Stiglitz, Piketty, Thaler, and much more (although not as influential as Friedman was in the 20th century). The economics reading catalogue at my graduate program is 90% demand-side & modern monetary theory economist literature. However, I’m not even puzzled because I can’t identify an empirically sound, free enterprise champion anywhere right of center with the intellect of a Sowell. Thank you in advance.

A walking, talking antidote to human stupidity. When I grow up, I want to be Thomas Sowell. Also, Sowell quoting Steele (24:41) - that's G.O.A.T. -ception.
