Born in poverty in North Carolina, Sowell grew up in Harlem, New York.[2] Due to financial issues and deteriorated home conditions, he dropped out of Stuyvesant High School and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. Upon returning to the United States, Sowell enrolled at Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude in 1958.[3] He earned a master's degree in economics from Columbia University in 1959, and earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago in 1968.

As someone who has lived in several different countries and a person of color. My father is black and my mother is Vietnamese. I was warned before I moved to the US that Black people in America were perpetual victims. They were taught and nurtured a victim mentality from birth and had no real idea of their true history. I have to say it’s true. Racism is the excuse for every failure and every missed opportunity. I see it all the time. Will some people not like you because you’re black, probably. Just like some people won’t like other people because they are white, or they’re rich, or they are beautiful, they may be too athletic or too fat. There will always be someone looking for a reason to not like you. It really has anything to do with the race or even with you personally. The idea of someone paying reparations for something they did not do to people who did not suffer one day under slavery is asinine and boggles my mind. The kind of entitlement you must have to justify that in your brain is crazy.

To add to that a lot of peoples ancestors didnt even come to the US until decades after the end of the civil war- late 1880s/90 & early 1900s the US had a population boom with immigrants from Italy, Ireland etc. I was born into a bi-racial now tri-racial family & my elders taught me from a young age to shut down all that kinda talk "dont you dare try to benefit off the suffering of your ancestors". Have a auntie that dated white men during the jim crow years & her & other of my elders always say some black folks nowdays complain about slavery more than our ancestors who were slaves proably did. Do have a problem with Sowell saying "liberals" along with other ppl nowdays. Here’s the thing they get wrong. Reparations weren’t just for slavery. After the abolition of slavery there were deliberate efforts to keep black Americans from succeeding. For example, in my city, there was red-lining. Black people were literally forbidden from living in areas with decent schools, resources, safety etc. this was still going on well into my lifetime. My grandfather got a free education from the GI bill. The bill specifically said black people could not benefit from it. That legacy has given me a benefit. When you deny education, right to vote, safety, healthcare etc to people for decades on end, the effects do not just disappear in a flash. Still in my city the schools in predominantly black neighborhoods are very deficient. As we speak, laws are being passed with the distinct purpose of making voting harder for people of color. This is not ancient history. It is now. And the fact that injustice exists around the world is no excuse for the wealthiest country to perpetuate it.

Slavery has pretty well been around since the beginning of mankind. The stronger dominating over the weaker. It was nothing to do with color. I have Viking ancestors. They took slaves back from the coast of what is now the UK. In fact one of those slaves is my bloodline from my ancestor grandfather who took a slave woman as a wife. In fact, the first slaves brought to what is now America were 100 Irish children. Thomas Sowell speaks facts with many years of research to back it up, the truth regardless of whether it's accepted or not, and is one of America's most intelligent men. Just like Jordan Peterson is one of our brightest for here in Canada!

@@andrew348 I don't take apartheid lightly and I'm not attempting to minimize its horrendous impact on people who were forced to live through it. It's disgusting it was even allowed to last as long as it did. Sowell was born in poverty during the great depression of the 1930's (only about 60 years after the institution of slavery ended). It would take generations for attitudes and policies concerning race to change. The civil rights era was YEARS away. Most people had a hard time during the depression but with racial segregation/discrimination firmly entrenched in the United States, an African American, especially one born in poverty, was headed for a hard life. I don't take that lightly either. Apartheid in South Africa and racial segregation in the United States may not have been exactly the same in their methods but they sure did share ideas and attitudes that were weaponized against some of their own people. It's not a competition between the two systems that were both wrong. Neither system should have existed.

"Equip yourself with skills people are willing to pay for". Yes, it is really that simple. But, yes, making this happen can be very difficult. You have to see what the market wants and what you can provide based on your skill, interest, ability, personality, etc. There are many avenues that can teach you knew skills or enhance what skills you already have. Despite how difficult this can be to achieve, how far are you going to get by sitting in front of a computer blaming the system and history and being the perpetual victim. Victimology doesn't pay. Mr V, you've got a good mind, a good heart, a fun and seemingly outgoing personality. You also have one thing that many people do not; an open mind. You are sitting there watching Thomas Sowell, Jordan Peterson, etc and challenging your existing belief system. I think you have what it takes to find your lot in life. It's just going to take reflection, discovery, hard work, and resilience. I've got faith you. The biggest obstacle you have to getting ahead in life, is the man you see in the mirror every day. South Africa has been facing a steadily increasing food shortage because the people that own that land have no idea how to farm. How about we ask where Trevor really descends from. Because a lot of the Africans in South Africa are descendants of people who were kicked out of their own country. Don't take my word for it though, take the word of the South African guy who can trace his family back to South Africa for almost a thousand years. There's a video where Mr Sowell talks about what he calls 'black English' I be, he be, they be, dis, dat, dem... I grew up in that world, where many of the white English rural argicultural workers used those words, that was how they spoke English. I assumed that it was fading away due to time, and the world moving on, Kids receiving better language education, and world wide communication shifting the language to a more univeral set of words and phrases. I'd never heard of 'black English' until I watched that video. It seems quite a lot of what is called 'black English' is or was just English of the past as spoken by the white people I grew up amongst. If you're watching him, you're on a path of opening your mind to information you've never heard of, let alone thought about, and that's how you get to be wiser.

Mr. V. You don't have to try to get smart. What you do daily is way more than a lot of couch-sitters I know. Know how many phone-using-I'm-all-that people have no idea how to set up a channel, how to get the equipment to work, how to channel sound digitally (not off localized speakers), how to resize and adjust aspect ratios, how to get into the system, etc.? And I don't even know what you do on your off-time, but you're smart. I know a lot of people who have advanced degrees who are smart in a very parochial range of expertise. They know this limited field, but they have no common sense, no ability to "figure out" practical things. What's so appealing about you is your sense of humor and your self-deprecation, despite your successful efforts to do something with your life. I admire that. Try to get smart? I'll say it again ... you're smart. :)
