The bells toll once for the living, Two more for those who are lost. For those who shall stir nevermore, A prayer in silence is forgotten. Does the bird not sing for the dawning day? Does the rain fall when a parched river dries? Do dreams seek still Avalon, if Eden remembers not paradise? The bell tolls not for silent prayers. The lost seek not their memories, No mourning comes for the living. Rejoice, we lucky few forgotten.

If we think about it, if we were in that same position. Having the choice of either, dying now, never to see and support your family ever again, or follow orders, and maybe die by trial in the future. That is, if you lose the war. but until then, you can spend much more time with your wife, children, and the ones you love. Honestly, when it comes to survival, so many people would choose as thomas chose. Because our own survival is more important to us, than the survival of the ones we dont know.

Industrial Society and It's future by Theodore John Kaczynski (funni copypaste) Introduction 1: The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in "advanced" countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in "advanced" countries.

Thomas is a short blue tank engine with six small wheels, a short stumpy funnel, and a short stumpy dome. He's proud of his number one and known for being cheery, but today, he is not. He stares at a strange man at a big podium, confused as to why he's here. The man sits up and stares down at him. "Thomas, correct?", he asks. "Yes sir!", He responds, still not understanding the gravity of the situation he's in. "Ok. Thomas, what do you know about your past jobs?" Thomas looks around him, feeling very tense. He looks at the two men next to him, and they nod reassuringly. "Well... I know I carried Passengers to a camp, but I never picked them up", The Engine replied truthfully. "Did you ever wonder why?" "I sure have. The place never got any bigger, and people kept going in..." The man pulls the microphone close to his lips. "Did anything seem off to you other than that, Thomas?" "No, not really... Except that the passengers were never happy. They always cried, screamed, or tried to communicate to me in a language I don't understand. I just assumed they were praising me for being on time. They always held out their hands to me as they were dragged into the building. There was black smoke everywhere, and lots of ashes, too. I remember a child called my name while being thrown to the ground. I tried to help, but I never saw him again. That has haunted me ever since." "That child, and thousands of others were killed, Thomas. You took them to their graves." Suddenly, Thomas's heart sunk low. He turned pale and stared into the white wall straight in front of him. It all started to make since: the corpses, the screams, the little boy. He wore that number one proudly, thinking he was doing a good job. He was being really useful in all the wrong ways. Thomas is a short blue tank engine with six small wheels, a short stumpy funnel and a short stumpy dome. However, though he may be short, his sins more than make up for his height. "What do you plead, Thomas?", the strange man asked after he broke out of his trance. Tears in his eyes and staring at his number one in his reflection, Thomas now realizes what he's done. He sees the same child flicker for just a split second as he says his final words. "I plead guilty. I'm sorry, sir. I was only following orders.

If I were to ever defy them, I would be nothing but a pile of scrap. Another dead of the thousands.” “So you saved your own caboose over thousands of others in a selfish act?” “It wouldn’t have made a difference, am I wrong? "And you never once asked about your orders? Who these people were? Where you were taking them, and why?" "Useful engines don't ask questions. It wasn't my job to know. It was my job to arrive on time." "Did you ever consider why the carriages were full on the way there, and always empty on the way back?" "..." "Thomas?" "I am around coal-powered tank engines all day, every day. I know the smell coal makes when it burns. I knew that the smoke in that place wasn't coal." "And you took thousands of people there every day, for two full years?" "Those were my orders. If I didn't follow them I would be dead too. A useful engine always follows orders, and there was no place in the Reich for useless engines." "So you valued your life over the lives of the countless innocent people you carried to their deaths?" "Do you think they would still be alive if I didn't? Don't you think they would have found another engine to arrive on time? Those people were dead before they even stepped on the platform. Nothing I could have done would have changed that. The only difference between me and them was that I had a choice; a choice to move forward and live, or stay put and die. I made the choice for the lowest possible number of people to die. Is self-preservation a crime?" "If you knew what was happening, why did you agree to take the job in the first place?" "You think I knew then? All anyone knew then was that things were better than they had been. The trains were running on time and if you didn't ask too many questions you could have a good life. We were still confident that victory was on the horizon. I only found out what was going on when it was too late for me to say no. What do you think they saw in you that made you suitable?" "I was never there first choice! The Allies had bombed the Reich's infrastructure to smithereens, there was nobody else left. You bombed Herr Gordon, Herr James, Herr Percy. They chose me because they had to choose someone and their first choices were all dead." "So you were the last resort?" "Everyone else was gone. I only survived because I kept my head down and followed orders, like a useful engine should." "So if you were truly the last engine they could call upon, you could have saved those people?" "What? I never said that. What are talking about? They were already dead, all I could do was follow my orders." "And if you refused to follow them, there was nobody left to replace you?" "..." "Is that not what you said Thomas? You were never the first choice? Everyone else was gone? Move forward or stay put, and you chose to go forward?" "...Useful engines follow orders and arrive on time." "And it didn't matter what you were useful for, as long as you were useful for something?" "Useful engines follow orders." "Was it useful for the people you carried to the camp?" "..." "Thomas?" "You would have done the same. You all would." "I'm sorry? What do you mean by that?" "The only difference between you and I, sir, is that I can see the tracks I follow. If you were on the tracks, you'd have followed them too." "Do you regret what you did?" "..." "Thomas? Do you regret it?" "...I see those gates every time I close my eyes. Every time I sleep I hear the crying children and smell the..." "The crying children, Thomas." "..." "Do you still feel like useful engine now, Thomas, because you followed orders and arrived on time?" "..." "Thomas?" "Kill me or let me go. You punish me either way. And everytime, every single goddamn time, they would look at me with tears in their eyes, holding their children in their arms knowing it would be the last time, and i just watched, i wanted to move but they made sure i would stay in place by chaining my wheels down and forcing me to look at them. And then i wake up." "I see..But even if you were forced, you're still guilty of these crimes, and no ammount of sorrow and pain you experienced can change that." "Do it. @zombieranger34105 жыл бұрын
Random User well after watching the video and looking at comments, I pondered about how to make a claim that you had to do the job you were given or suffer a fate worse than death, the suffering of another alongside. Either you help in the genocide of millions of families, or force another poor sap to take your place and do the exact same thing. The genocide doesn’t stop, but you prevent 1 person from taking your place and doing the things you are forced to do. In a sense, doing your “job” and not suiciding/getting killed is the most selfless thing you can do in that situation and allows you to accept yourself in the smallest way. I then summed it all up, added the “said Thomas” meme for funny effect, and posted. Edit: Real talk, I really do think these videos have such deep meaning behind them and I feel like I gained something out of each instead of just being funny. Perspectives and morality, when doing the wrong thing is the most right thing, esc, its beautiful.

Nothing was left for Thomas, his soul had blurred deep into nothingness long ago. He knew the terrible acts he was committing but after years of it he was filled with nothing but a numb ringing in his ears. He knew he had brought thousands to their deaths. He knew the smell of those dreadful smokestacks. He always told himself he was just following orders. But he could never escape, the rails leading out of germany were guarded. The ones he carried had also lost their chance at life. He knew he was a dead train and that's why he did it. He wishes he had just ended it all earlier, he could have avoided this nightmare. But now he's to numb to want death anymore. Escape is nothing but an illusion to him. Even death seems far away, though he brings it to all those unfortunate enough to cross paths with him.

It's actually canon that Thomas was alive during WWII. He's an E2-Class tank engine, meaning he was built in 1913-1916. Perhaps Germany purchased him as a locomotive to pull the trains. But how would he be a part of T&F? Well, Sir Topham Hatt was desperate for locomotives. He accepted Henry despite his mechanical flaws, for instance. So maybe he bought Thomas before he was scrapped for his crimes. This would explain how cheery he is as well; he's hiding his true self and his depression behind a façade of joy--much like Robin Williams. So this video has the potential to be canon

"The most extraordinary thing about him was how plainly ordinary he was. He wasn't a sociopath or a sadist. He was mentally competent, though not blessed with extreme intelligence. His actions were not motivated by a sense of racial superiority or distain of others. In fact, it seems he was driven more by a desire to competently perform his duties and please his superiors, rather than any real hatred for the Jews. He often remarked that Gruppenführer von Tophem Hat congratulated him several times on his efficiency and punctuality. It was said with the same amount of pride that any laborer might have when his hard work is noticed by a supervisor. Had he been on the side of the Allies, he would no doubt have performed whatever duties with the same amount of gusto. Perhaps that is what made him more terrifying than any Nazi fanatic or deranged Wehrmacht officer. That such banal motivations could drive a sane, rational being to participate in such acts." -Hannah Arendt, Thomas in Israel.

"Why? That was the question most would ask me. Why did I find Thomas 'the Death Engine' not guilty? Had I not heard the stories about how he had carried tens possibly even hundreds of thousands to their doom never once offering up the most minute of protest? Not even the tiniest bit of rebellion? An engine who's only defense was that 'Good Engines Follow Orders' and that he wanted to be 'Useful'. I once thought him as guilty as Hitler, Himmler, or any other Nazi. That was until I looked in his eyes. Did you know Thomas barely said a word throughout that whole trial? Everyone hears about his 'Good Engines Follow Orders' defense but that only came up in the very end. As the years went by I got the feeling that in that moment he wasn't speaking to us but to himself. After hours of silently hearing his laundry list of crimes his 'defense' was quite possibly an attempt to reassure himself that deep down he was still a good person... While I can't say much about his character I can say that he regretted his actions. I watched him wince as the prosecution listed off the names of some prominent jews Thomas had the 'honor' of taking to Auschwitz. No doubt shaken by the fact that he now had names for a few of the thousands of faces eternally etched in his memory. That was why I gave the Not Guilty verdict. Not out of a sense of mercy or compassion. But because I knew whatever punishment we gave him paled in comparison to the one he was giving himself...

“I was just following orders..” he said with guilt in his heart..”It was all I could do..” as he recalled the dreaded art. Remembering the smell, the sight the sound, it flooded his dreams like a dreaded hound Sending the innocents to their doom, and if he wasn’t on time..they would make room. So when he was caught, Thomas cried, not in anger or rage, but relief, as no more death would he wrought. But the relief soon ended as he was given time to think, the trauma chaining him down, link by link. After seconds of silence, he finally spoke, his eyes flooded with tears, and his smoke stack blowing sickening smoke. “Kill me or release me, those who stand before me..both would be a punishment..if you understood me.”

January 20th, 1945 - January 27th, 1945 Thomas sat within his station as he spoke with the Reichsführer, every second that passed the feeling of carts becoming heavier and heavier weighed down his soul. He looked to Himmler, his silver like white face covered in dirt and mud, the blue paint chipped, and his innocence slowly being ripped away from him "Himmler, who are those people? The people you put in my carts?" He stared blankly into the eyes of Himmler "That is not your concern Thomas, your only duty is to transport what we demand you transport, a good tank Engine follows orders Thomas... your not following orders" Himmler barked at Thomas "I understand Reichsführer... I will be a good tank Engine" Thomas began to rev up his engine however little did he know this would be his last journey because in seven days he and the entirety Auschwitz would be liberated by the approaching Red Army. He began to make his way down the tracks, the feeling of dread and anxiety filled Thomas's head but these emotions must be blocked out, he is serving the glorious Third Reich! Or was he just serving a mad man? This question played over and over in his head and as the day fleeted to night but he couldn't find an answer, the poor Engine was just following orders but that created another question... when does one stop following orders and start following there hearts? There was no time to make a decision because as he arrived to Auschwitz he was greeted by Rudolf Höss, the Commandant of Auschwitz "Thank you Thomas, you're heroism will never be forgotten" He began to walk away however Thomas yelled out to him "Rudolf... who are those people?" He asked the same question he had asked Himmler, he didn't expect a straight answer, deep down inside he understood the horrors that were being committed. He knew what the smell of coal was and the smell coming from that camp wasn't coal, it smelt much much worse and every second he remained in it he became more and more sick "There nobodies Thomas, do not worry yourself" Rudolf was obviously lying to Thomas, you could see the distain in his face but you could also smell the fear in his mind, he knew the Soviet's were just a stone toss away but he was so convinced that what he was doing was right... in fact he believed Germany was still going to win the war "Rudolf, I know your lying to me" He said in a calming yet harsh voice, for the last 7 years he had been lied to by the higher officials in the Allgemeine SS, he cleared his throat "Please, for once can you tell me the truth" Rudolf turned to Thomas, he was shocked by the anger within Thomas's voice but he kept a straight face and kept composure, he leaned into Thomas and spoke rather harshly "Thomas... you couldn't handle the truth if I were to tell you! Now what does a good tank engine do?" Thomas looked down before gaining the courage to speak back against Rudolf, the coal within him burning hotter and hotter as anger took over his senses. He looked Rudolf in the eyes "With all due respect Commandant" he paused, he thought about his mother and father back in Sodor but he knew they were dead, the allied bombings had to have killed them and if it wasn't that it was the dreaded Americans "I would like to know" Rudolf sighed and placed his hand on the door to Thomas, he wiped the sweat off his face and leaned in ever closer, this time the harshness was gone but the voice of a brave man took over "Thomas... we're killing them... we're killing them all... we are making sure Germany remains pure, even if the allies destroy us... we will remain pure and I do not intend on stopping. You are relieved of your duties Thomas, you don't have to do this any longer" Thomas looked Rudolf one last time, tears filling up in his eyes "Even the children?" "Yes Thomas... even the Children" Thomas looked forward into the dark and stormy sky, he could hear the sound of fighting in the distance and he knew the end was drawing near for the Reich. He had a chance to escape but instead of doing so he held his ground, he knew that only god could judge what he had done... he didn't fear the allies anymore... he only feared what punishments awaited him in hell...
