I have been through Thomas several times driving from NE Ohio to Blackwater Falls State Park. One of the last times I went through a building collapsed on the street within 2 hours of my driving through southbound. It was in the winter and there had been quite a bit of snow. I always enjoyed stopping in the town. Thank you for the visit.

Nice presentation! 👍I remember reading about the coal town of Thomas, WV (they had a serious fire and a tornado somewhere in their history) but I don't even remember why I read about it. Could have been a small fragment in one of the many international standardized tests of American English; I used to prepare people for that kind of tests. At 9:38 - Is that the American Black Bear (the state animal of West Virginia) guarding the premises? Kind regards, Paul 🙏

It is a black bear, Paul. But not a real one. Only one that was done by an artist. Their usually not that tall standing up on their legs. We love Thomas and go back almost every year. It's not close to where we live though. Over the years it's had several disasters. The historical signs point them out. I remember early in the 1900's (from the signs) a fire destroyed much of the town. It also had a tornado mid century that did in much of the mine but I don't recall clearly. It's a beautiful place today! Thanks so much for watching and your lovely comment.

Just about the whole state is absolutely stunning. Their experiencing some economic hardships though. I think the cost of living is reasonable though and the people are so friendly. It's a wonderful state!

It was like a Bed and Breakfast on our other trips. Because of covid they aren't renting now. Hopefully, that will change! They were also open 7 days a week in the past but tourism is way down. We pray they will survive. Many of the other business have closed there. We didn't show that. It's been tough on the town.

My mother and grandparents came to the states in 1912 on the Lusitania from Mossley, England. Their last name was Hyde. I wonder if we might be related. Stranger things have happened. Love to all.

Perhaps somewhat distantly. We can trace the Hyde lineage in our family back to around 1800. My ancestor Henry Hyde was born in Kentucky around then. We only know from his son Stephan's obituary. In that it said his father was born in Kentucky. Nothing more. We can only find one Henry Hyde that was born in Kentucky around then but doesn't show he had sons so we aren't sure. His parents did come from England. I've got my DNA tested and it lists England as my number one make-up. So it's possible but it would be distant. Would love to hear more about your family. @@TravelingTramps It would be great to compare our families. I have the family Bible from 1790 Scotland with family births and deaths. There's also Whiteheads a ways back. My Great Uncle was in the Black watch, aka, "The Ladies from Hell" because of the kilts and the skirl of the pipes going into battle. I don't know how we can connect on here without the immediate world getting our info. I'd love to speak with you both. BTW, I'm up there a little bit, a young 75. Love to you both too.

Thanks for coming along with us Eric. Sadly, most of the businesses weren't going to open until the weekend. Thomas, Davis and the surrounding area are really hurting. Covid has did a number on tourism. This was August and the place should have been really hopping. As you see from the video, it's not. When we've been there in the past it was crowded. I don't think it makes it worthwhile to open. We would have loved to take a closer look!
